well since one of the reasons for wanting (not minding) a 260z over a 240z was so i could play with the tail lights (as 240z ones are that sexy they dont need any improvement...but 260z ones leave something to be desired) i've been looking for a set of skyline rear lights to fabricate in, i was going to get a set of r33 ones and then put the indicator and reverse light up around the edge of the panel, mazerati style, but then i came across some 4 door series 2 ones, which i had never really seen before and decided to give them a shot, i was thinking of doing r32 lights as its already been done but these have the indicator and reverse light in the bit between the lights and that bits a nicer shape, plus they stick out ferrari style :twisted: so i thought it'd b more interesting...and many thanks to sulio as i have his old lights in my car while i play around with my panel.

 

i now pretty much have it all ready to be glued all together properally and make it look pretty...which hopefully isn't the longest part, but either way it wont happen for awhile due to work around christmas. i'm just going to use balsa wood so i dont have to spend ages making fibreglass flat and i think it should do the job alright, but if you think this is a bad idea please let me know!

 

i'm going to have to cut the panel behind the rear lights in order to fit the lights in as i can't cut them any smaller (they are way smaller than they used to be), how should i do this? just a hack saw? and also are the holes on 240z's and some 260z's larger? as sulio i can't see from images how 240z lights would fit through the holes in my 260z, is this one of the things thats different from the early 260's to the later ones? or are my eyes playing tricks on me? if it is larger can someone tell me the width of the hole? i dont really want to cut into my car if i'm going to sell it soon, but if i do cut into it then i'll cut the fenders and get the flares, i'll wait to see how these panels turn out, please excuse the dodgy photoshop but i couldnt be bothered doing it better!

more pics...i woulda of liked to do r34 lights but besides probably costing way to much they really are huge, it was hard enough to make these fit, but i guess it depends on how much ur happy cutting out of your car, old school skyling lights would also be quite cool, specially since it has the gold trim...

Its going to look rather like a 180sx Type X (late model, round taillights) when you're done......

yeah, is that a bad thing? hehe a few of my mates have said that too, that the lights look a bit like those 180sx ones, i've seen one 180sx in boxhill (naturally) with r32 lights, on a side topic 180's sure look like newer 240's...i like the angle around the numberplate, otherwise i woudln't have bothered doing it though hehe, would look nice with an exhuast setup similar to the sr240z car below it too

You sure that 180sx with 'R32' lights wasn't just a type x? Late model 180sx's (about '95-'96?) have round tail lights, and are badged type x..... And yes, 180sx's defintely have throwback lines to a zed.

There is a white Z on classicZcars with the skyline lights, a carbon fibre rear light panel and ZG flares which to my surprise look quite good.

Evan not sure what your plans are but you mentioned someting about using wood!? if you hack into that rear panel be prepared to spend quite a bit of time and money getting these lights to fit and look right, I don't think woods gonna cut it. You'll most likley need a lot of trial and error making fibre glass rear panels for this to look right so be careful. A hack saw might be awkward, I used a small grinder to bastardise that rear panel.

 

One way of fitting these lights neatly would be to make moulds for fibre glass of the 240 rear panels but make them without the actual opening for the light, then cut out the new shape in the new fibre glass panels to neatly fit the skyline lights through the hole. Next issue will be bolting them neatly to the steel panel. Jeez you might want to take a month off work and school to finish this one off, alot of mucking around with it.

 

I still think the 240 lights look great and they're an easy conversion.

yeah i'm sure the 180 i saw that one time had r32 lights in it, but yeah it seems kinda pointless when there's those type x ones (i never knew the name but knew they were on the newer 180's)

 

yeah i'm unsure on the balsa, it was suggest to me as i want the surfaces to be flat anyway, its nothing structural, basically the lights will b made up of 4 parts, the front of each seperate light and the rear of each, but yeah i'm going to make sure the panel looks decent before i cut into the panel behind it...it'd b nice to get it laid outta carbon fibre but doesn't seem worth the effort atm, just thought i'd post wat i'd done so far in my few spare days since i didnt have many extra shifts this week...if the balsa version does look crap i might take it to the workshop at uni and see if they can help me make an inverse mold and lay carbon fibre :twisted:

 

i was thinking of painting the chrome bit around the 260z lights black like on on3go's car, but :S if this panel doesn't work out i'll tint the spare lenses i now have to just leave silver rings...but i have heard bad insurance stories regarding tinted lenses, 240z lights might be the go, i'll wait to see how this goes, i think it should work that photoshoped pic only has the lenses photoshoped in, the panel itself is fitted to the car no prob, just needs the bit behind it cut so the lense part will fit in so i dont think it will be to much more work to fix it to the steel panel, and i've taken another 2 more months off uni and work well hopefully not work...

 

is this the car you were talking about sulio? in some pics its carbon fibre, but if i had one bit carbon fibre i'd want the flares bonnet and spoilers to be too hehe

Old thread but I thought I would bring it back from the dead. I also have a set of those R33 lights like you Evan (purchased them over a 1 1/2 years ago now) and was thinking of doing the same to my 260z. However I spotted this post of a 280zx 2 seater with the C210 JDM tail lights fitted so now I have mate in Japan looking for a set as these look more period IMHO. I am also onto a lead locally here in NZ but one of the lights has a broken lense but if I can pick these up and use them for getting the mounting etc while my contact in Japan gets me a better set then all good.

yeah i was concidering buying a set of c110 skyline rear lights at one stage as they like they could of come on the car, but i guess it depends what look you want.

 

regarding the led tail lights for it to look nice you have to set up the array and fill the whole lense imho, there's a guy in america who's got an eclipse and his rear lights are nuts, i'll try to find a pic later on

i just found some pics of the guys eclipse. there's some videos of it too, he has little segments strobe in the order of the direction he's turning and stuff like that, not sure if its legal...lol, but i dont get americas indicators, but i havn't ever really tried

yeah im like you i dont like the 260z rear lights. just doesnt cut it. i even chromed the complete rear garnish to give it bit better but still not happy. i did get 2 r32 rear lights. they seemed to fit ok but not wanting to have one style i wanted 2 ie original and r32 ones.

 

that bit like a divider thing yeah 260z all have it if it was one big hole would have been easy. i did similar what u did with the rear lights cut he 260z housing and garnish though i only did the housing as im trying to figure out how to cut that rear panel. i left it for now got other things to stuff around with at the moment on the car. ie finishing the wiring and driveline. but will post about it soonish.

 

good luck only comment i got its bit flat and square. on mine im going to retain the edge roundness of the 260z garnish. well thats the plan just hope i can execute it.

hmmmm mine are keeping the bevel around the outside of the 260z lights, and then i'm going to try to adapt the middle to the shape of the skyline lights, not that you can really see it with the balsa wood there
