Hi guys,

The seatbelts in my 240Z are a bit tired and I am considering replacing them.  I have seen people have used Hemco.  I haven't contacted them as yet.

I have found a rare spares kit on ebay, has anyone got any feedback on rare spares or have used this kit?

Ditto same with my '74 260 2-seat. Saw the eBay ones, but I'm going to talk to Seatsafe - their website says they will have a stand at the Cleveland show tomorrow which I'm going to.

I want to check my options - like yours mine being built pre-1 Jan 1974 according to ADR 4A I only need fixed belts. However, as fixed belts can be a PITA I want to check how Seatsafe do their retractables option for a 260Z, hoping maybe they have a system without having to install the 4th mounting points within the sills to address ADR 5A requirements for retractors. Worth asking anyway.

I think that the Rare Spares belts are made by APV Safety Products (Campbellfield Victoria - Toll Free: 1800 804 588)

Aveska Restoration Parts (in Beverley SA) also sell the APV belts;

I spoke to Aveska about a month ago and asked for details about how they fit in a 240Z - I have not had a reply as yet.

You're probably across this but retractable belts won't pass rego in a 240z without being certified by an engineer

Really? Is that if you were to use alter the mounting points to suit260z type or just because of the retracting system?

Spoke to the Seatsafe rep today at their stand in Cleveland, very helpful guy.   www.seatsafe.com.au   07 3137 0044

They have the usual fixed 3-point belts, or a nifty retractable option which is designed around the standard 3 mounting points like our Zeds have, it doesn't need a 4th point installed. HOWEVER, the catch is that the retractor mechanism requires a 67mm clearance gap between the sill and any part of the seat opposite. The rep reckoned it can't work with a 240Z as the seat is mounted way too close to the sill and he's right - I just measured my 260Z 2-seat (similar shell) and I have maybe 42mm at best between carpeted sill and the plastic mechanism cover.

So fixed 'static' belts it is for me (replacing the original factory 3-piece clip-together system). $108 per set/side includes a taller stalk to clear the seat base.

Would include any early 260Z when built before 1 Jan 1974 too going by ADR 4A. Surely, strictly speaking any seatbelt install whether renewal or upgrade requires certification seeing as it's a retro-fit?

I'll be having my entire car inspected for first Qld rego in any case, some day...

If your making a direct replacement with complying components I would have thought only a mod plate fitted by an approved persons under QLD legalisation would be required, no engineering required.  I think this is under code LK clause 1.2 for the NCOP for light vehicles.

I think I will look into replacing the lap sash with a non-retractable.

Anyone had good experiences with Hemco?

So what is the seatbelt arrangement with 2-seat 260Zs - and 2+2 front seats too presumably - sold new in Australia? Are they retractables, and if so where are the retractors mounted?

Actually you could be right - an ADR retractable that only used the factory mount points / bolts should be OK. I was told by a blue slip inspector I was talking to ages ago you couldn't fit retractables but that was on the assumption that any retractable system would require a new mount point and would not just bolt in to the existing

Recently installed  the Aveska retractable belt to the drivers side of a 73 240Z.  For me it was a direct replacement of the previously installed system where the retractor system is mounted just forward of the rear wheel arch.  Bracket was not necessary however, a spacer was required to clear the interior trim on the roof mounting point.  Overall an excellent replacement of a frayed belt that would no longer retract fully.

Hi Coops,

could you please post some (=lots) of photos of your seat belt installation?

So the retractor is bolted to the wheel arch - was that the way they were done from new in Australia? ie. local mod to meet the ADRs?

Or was the retractable a later and engineered modification?

Rectangular plate with captured nut in the wheel arch.  Unlikely done from new but certainly doesn't look out of place.

I too have the lap sash seatsafe belts going into my car. Great option as they are new comply with requirements and gives a piece of mind in comparison to what I pulled out. The old belts were very worn and ratty.

Has anyone successfully installed these seatbelts (Rare Spares)? I spent about 3 hours last night trying to figure it out (mounting on the standard mounts)...

Sent Rarespares an email but no reply yet...

Currently, I have the retractor mounted and the top point on the rear hatch pillar and returns back to the retractor point.... BUT the belt rubs against the wheel arch... that's not going to work...

any other options?

thanks

If you've mounted the retractor on the factory sill fixing point then surely the retractor clashes with the seat when the seat is pushed back for long legs? That's a no-no under the Australian Design Rules, the seat must be allowed to have full travel. I don't know the RareSpares retractor unit size but IIRC the SeatSafe retractor requires 67mm clearance to enable the seat to slide past; on my 2-seater 260 there's roughly about 45mm, so well short. Hence I've gone with the SeatSafe fixed belts, replacing the original Nissan fixed 'Z' logo belts.
