Compe Steering Wheel Fitment

Hey all.

 

I've got a Compe wheel for my car and tried it for the first time since I bought it 2 + years ago and the indicator stalk is way to close to the wheel, so much so that you couldn't drive it without the back of your knuckles hitting the stalk as you steer.

 

Is this normal and the stalk needs to be bent to make room?

David. You might be able to machine up a spacer ring, like a wheel spacer, then mount the wheel and spacer to the hub with longer screws.

I don't recall having any issues with my wheel when I had it. The 'Compe' steering wheel has similar dish to the standard wheel so you shouldn't need a hub or spacer. Do you have a stock wood wheel to fit up and test clearance to the stalk?

 

Is it possible the stalk is bent a little more than normal making it too close to the wheel?

Its the same for me too David, a bit annoying but I didn't bend my stalk. Maybe Gareth has little knuckles

It's possible my stalk has been straightened at some stage allowing sufficient clearance for my sausage fingers.

Pics attached.....roughly twice the clearance with the standard wheel which also feels about right.

My stalk looks a lot straighter than that, it must've been fiddled with at some point.

When I fitted the Compe to my Bus I too had clearence issues, but not quite as bad as in your photos.

Maybe yours has been bent forward to suit an 80's deep dish steering wheel

 

I very carefully (and nervously) bent mine back about an inch or so.

Since the 'Compe' steering wheels - made by Izumi, same manufacturer as the OEM steering wheels - were based on the Japanese market steering wheels, they have a flatter 'dish' than the Export type wheels. This can lead to the spokes being a little close to the indicator stalk, and the solution is simply to (carefully!) bend the indicator stalk back a little to give a bit more clearance.

Interestingly I have Gareth's old wheel and didn't notice this as a problem when I fitted it. I also wonder if there is a difference between the OEM version and the replica's that have been made later?

 

Interestingly the reason for the different "dish" in the home market vs export market was for leg room. Taller foreigners needed more leg space, hence the deeper dish. I was always puzzled as to why there was 2 different depths of steering wheel.
