This discussion has been split from the Early Girl Bingo thread. In order to keep better track of specific cars and their specifications / details we need a database.

 

Creating a full fledged database to keep track of RHD (and for the most part AU market cars), is something I've discussed for a while. However before 'hard coding' any of it, I think it makes far more sense to have a temporary form using Google Forms to collect data and see how people interact with the form and try and determine what data we want to collect.

 

Think of it as an early prototype. Placing it into a spreadsheet will allow the data to be stored in a CSV (comma separated value) format. Which should be easy enough to merge into an SQL database when ready in future.

I am still working on the scope:

 

1. Required info.

2. What is desirable info to capture. What do we want to know about these cars?

3. Which cars we want to record, HS30, RS30 and GRS30. Keep in mind some members here have home market cars eg: S30 and S31's also.

4. At this stage I think HLS30, RLS30, GRLS30 is out of scope unless we think it's a good idea to try and record these also?

 

I am somewhat limited with what can be done via Google Spreadsheets / forms in terms of data validation etc.. My plan is not to make the spreadsheet viewable to the general public. Rather I'd keep the info under lock and key (or login) and only give out data in aggregate form (so it would stay somewhat anonymous).

 

For example I could then disclose how many sub 100 chassis number cars are left, or how many were white and blue combination that we know of. What engine numbers were used in the month of October 1970, how many are recorded as deceased etc..

 

And here is my final thought cloud for now, what I am thinking of doing is creating a new 'verified members' discussion board. This would only be available to members who have provided proof they own an S30Z and submitted their details to the register.

 

As an example I would ask for:

 

1. Photo of chassis ID.

2. Photo of engine bay ID plate.

3. Photo of engine number. (if original motor).

4. Photo of compliance plate. (if applicable for year or fitted).

 

When these details are provided members would get access to this verified section knowing that only other verified members could see posts in that section. I am still all for being an open forum for the most part. However as these cars become more and more desirable there is certain discussions that I think others would feel more comfortable discussing within a certain circle of known folks.

 

Talking to many people over email, PM etc.. about these cars I noticed there is a subset of us who have been around these cars for many years and maybe have a couple of them and would benefit from a dedicated section that may not be in the direct public eye, where we don't know who is really looking in.

 

So with all that I'm open to discussions / thoughts and suggestions?

While you are still tweaking it, could you please add '307 Metallic Blue' as a 1970-1973 240Z colour? (my 9/73 240Z was definitely 307 from the factory)

Thanks Ian, this is where I will run into issues with Google Forms, I don't have a great way of making form fields dependent on each other or only visible when you select say HS30 as your chassis prefix. We already have 307 Metallic Blue but it's under 74+ colours. I will do some more research into how I can configure the form and maybe come up with a better solution.

 

Ideally I want this form to work, not just for 240z's, but also 260z and 2+2's etc..

Thanks for the suggestion, I wasn't sure if current specification would be something we wanted to track. I was a little apprehensive of making the form too long and causing people to give up on filling the details in. But it would be good to record these details to see what is original vs modified.

Similar to Peter's suggestion, the first 2 are fine.

 

With regard to S130's, I will consider this if there is enough demand. However I didn't include it for a few of reasons:

 

a.) My knowledge of S130's is limited.

b.) I'm not sure how much demand there will be yet.

c.) I wanted to make sure it was working well for the earlier cars first, then could be expanded to cover later cars. At least that was my line of thought.

Surely Year, Model, Chassis No, Original Colour Exterior, Original Colour Interior, would be sufficient?

Not much point in recording Engine No. as so many would have been changed out by now.

Country Sold New In, would be of interest, picking up NZ, UK, JDM, whatever, cars, unless you only want a database of remaining Aus-new cars & ignore the rest.

Specs is a minefield, there's factory specs, there's dealer-added options, there's owner-added options (maybe a great many over what some 40 yrs...)...whereas the 'Country Sold New In' would provide the key data there, without clouding the issue with post-factory modifications which can change from owner to subsequent owner.

Engine number is important to some people - especially those interested in period correct / originality. Modifications etc are of interest too - remember the intent is to track the history of the cars as much as possible. A field length restriction will prevent people from documenting every switch / bolt that has been replaced.

I haven't finished this yet, so thanks for the submission but I still have some tidying up to do. The other records for now are not displayed and I'm still to figure out how I want to manage that part yet.
