Administrators gav240z Posted May 4, 2015 Administrators Posted May 4, 2015 Hi guys, So I've been looking at a good set of hammer and dolly to buy, my tafe course this semester is on hold due to lack of numbers so I'm hoping it will resume next semester. In the interim I'm looking to press on on my own so I was researching hammer and dolly sets. I found recommendations for Snap-On (expensive) and Martin (a little less expensive). http://www.eastwood.com/fiberglass-handle-body-fender-hammer-dolly-7pc.html?reltype=3 Unfortunately Eastwood's can't give me an accurate shipping quote upfront and if I know anything about shipping from the US it's super expensive. I was wondering with regard to panel beating tools etc.. What is the best place to find 'old school tools'? There must be panel shops that close down and liquidate etc.. Where can I find used tools that are high quality? I've looked on Gumtree, eBay, Graysonline etc.. but it seems hit and miss. I guess what I'm ideally looking for is perhaps someone who is retiring and getting rid of quality gear. Quote

Administrators gav240z Posted May 4, 2015 Author Administrators Posted May 4, 2015 http://www.metalmantools.com.au Thanks. http://www.melomotive.com/ Used to work with the owner , good guy and know's his stuff . Cheers Doug Looks like his Hammer and Dolly is the Eastwood Fairmont brand. I'm guessing that nobody recommends finding second hand used tools then? I kind of like using old stuff that has done the rounds rather than shiny new tools. I think I might buy a decent starter kit to give me the main tools I'll use and then look in other places for more obscure dolly's, hammers etc.. that might not get used that often. Quote
zzzzed Posted May 4, 2015 Posted May 4, 2015 There are always second hand hammer and dollys on eBay I would start there Quote
Administrators gav240z Posted May 4, 2015 Author Administrators Posted May 4, 2015 There are always second hand hammer and dollys on eBay I would start there Thanks mate, yeah I've been looking but it's hard to know from photos how good they are. Is there a list of brands I should go for? I have a cheap hammer and dolly set my step dad bought years ago when he dented my mum's volvo (they were dating at the time) so I still have a bit of a chuckle about it. Anyway when I was in Melbourne around Christmas I dusted the set off and took it back to Sydney with me, well what a disappointment. Just very cheaply made and I haven't used them at all on my 240z for fear of doing more damage than good. 1 of the hammer heads fell off the wooden handle within about 3 whacks on a piece of metal I was practicing on. So I really want to avoid the cheap Chinese made junk...Hence the reason I was looking for some vintage / well used tools that have 'proven' themselves. This is the hard part for any beginning knowing the difference between cheap and good quality tools and what to look for etc.. Quote
Brabham Posted May 4, 2015 Posted May 4, 2015 Hey Gav, some of the good ones are old Sykes-pickavant (SP), not new SP stuff, Elora and Stahlwille. The latter two are German made but are expensive (but high quality that should last a lifetime). Cheers Quote
1600dave Posted May 4, 2015 Posted May 4, 2015 I have mostly old Sykes Pickavant tools I "acquired" when Iworked at a place that sold panel beating gear many years ago. Some of the handles are a little charred where I've used them to hold stuff in place when welding, different colours due to getting overspray all over them, etc, etc. Point is, I've abused them badly and they are still going strong. I did a panelbeating course here http://www.historicvintagerestorations.com/classes.html , as did another prominent z owner (we are both featured in their photos on the website, must be because we were so intelligent, handsome and just generally photogenic....) and from memory they sold decent tools at a decent price ?? Brabham Posted May 4, 2015 Posted May 4, 2015 Hazet are another one, can't remember if they do panelbeating tools Quote
garvice Posted May 4, 2015 Posted May 4, 2015 I've bought from https://www.tinmantech.com/ before. Reasonably happy worth service and very happy with tools. Get some good slappers (metal and wood) and spoons. Highly recommend this dvd too. http://metalshapingzone.com/epages/e8196bd5-9af5-4b32-b689-b436b9abb456.mobile/?ObjectPath=/Shops/e8196bd5-9af5-4b32-b689-b436b9abb456 Quote
garvice Posted May 4, 2015 Posted May 4, 2015 Oh yeah. I forgot to say, I find myself making most of my dollies/forms as required. Really just get away with a toe dolly for most general stuff. Quote

markz1234 Posted May 6, 2015 Posted May 6, 2015 Peter Tomassini makes and sells his own tools, dvd's etc. Pretty clever chap on panel work - he travels overseas alot teaching the yanks. also look up 'Allmetalshaping' and 'Metal Meet' forum sites. Hare & forbes had a reasonable set @ $220.00 'ish a while ago. Stuart at Metalman Tools has some better stuff as well. Otherwise - railway iron and steel blocks are your best friend... if you need some rail I have some spare...but i'm in eastern Vic. Quote
