Azman1984 Posted August 10, 2014 Posted August 10, 2014 Hey guys! As some of you would have seen I have finally become a Zed owner again after being Zedless for about 8 years. I finally decided on so far what seems to be a decent gold 1975 260z 2+2. When I brought it from the owner it had been sitting idle in a shed for 6 years, it was described to me as something that had little rust, a shagged interior and a good base for a project for myself and my sons and boy I was not disappointed. I went and looked at the car and other than surface rust and some rust around the hatch and slam panel I could not see much wrong with it at all! The interior is shagged but that sets me up nicely to do something semi custom with it. The car wouldn't but since getting it home putting an electric fuel pump and new coil in it, it fired up, drove round the block and is now ready to start coming apart to be fixed up. The biggest problem I can see that I will have is that seems to be missing some trims and small pieces here and there and the wiring seems to have a lot of shorts in it, so the question of fixing the original wiring or going with something like a painless kit needs to be asked. It also has a hole in the passenger that needs a plate welded into it, im not sure if this was an attempted rust removal as it is a nice square hole but seems to have been punched through rather than nicely cut. I am still yet to fully decide all of the details for the future of this car, but do have what I believe will be a nice color picked out and atleast a manual conversion to get me started. I will do my best to keep the pictures and story of this build updated when I can. Quote

Have started to strip the front end panels and its becoming quite evident that it has been apart before at some stage withing stripped and cross threaded bolts being a big problem not to mention quite a lot of them missing all together, also a somewhat unwanted surprise of finding the drivers side guard had been welded at the bottom instead of bolted on. So I may well now need a new drivers guard at some stage. Seems to have had a repair done in the front end at some stage. Will be interesting to see what other surprises she yields as I lowly strip her down. Quote

I now have most of the front end panels except for the bonnet which I am currently working on now stripped of paint and sitting in primer waiting to go into storage until they are ready for paint. I must say who ever did the repairs on this car previously was certainly very fond of bog, even in places I have since discovered did not even require it. Hoping by the end of the weekend to have all the front panels away and then I can start on stripping out the rest of the car and seeing what else I can find. Quote

Oh let us know when you find the old 'hammer it in' and fill with bog technique. I haven't seen the fenders welded to the chassis yet, that's a new 1 for me. Perhaps the PO was fond of British sports cars? The broken fender bolts along the top of the guards are pretty standard. Rust kills them. I tried to go really slow on my Gold 240z when removing them. Managed to get most of them out without an issue except for 1 on each fender. Right where the channel sort of comes to a dead end before the radiator support area. Lots of crud builds up there and then you get the rust monster. Anyway, chin up if you can laugh off the dodgy repairs you'll be in better spirits. I certainly have a giggle now when I find the dodgy stuff. Feels good to 'correct' the last person's errors and do it right. Quote
Azman1984 Posted August 22, 2014 Author Posted August 22, 2014 Haha yes the welded guard was a new one for me too, was a bit dumbfounded when I went looking for the two lower bolts to remove and they didn't exist. So now I've either gotta find another guard or make the move to fibreglass front guards. Atleast the broken bolts are easy enough to tap out and replace. Haha yes plenty of laughs at the amount of bog although a little worried how much I'll find in the actual body. Quote

I now have all the front panels sitting in primer except the passenger side guard which should be primed by the weekend I am hoping and then they can all go into storage until she is ready for paint. Starting to turn my attention to finding the missing parts, deciding on engine options and making room to start to strip out the rest fo the car. Will upload some more pics when I get a chance to. Got the rear hatch off today to closer inspect it and see how bad the rust is... so looks like ill be after another hatch as soon as funds permit and the right hatch comes up. Quote
Azman1984 Posted January 17, 2015 Author Posted January 17, 2015 So with another few hours spent in the garage today all of the interior except for the roof lining and dash was removed. It seems the rust monster has reared its ugly head again with a nice hole in the drivers side sil panel which was originally hidden under the scuff plate. Along with the hole in the floor I knew about I also noticed that it seems it has hit something as the passenger foot well has been pushed up a little, shouldn't be too much to fix. As I dig further I am finding more and more things that require fixing as I expected would happen not just with a Zed but almost any car of this age. While finding each of these things is a little disheartening and also adds extra time and cost to my build all of that was replaced with the original reason I started this project, watching my son come outside pick up a rag and just simply start wiping all the dust off, helping to pick up all the miscellaneous junk from off the floor pan and under the seats. I don't care how long or how much this build costs as they will never compare to these memories. Quote

While not that big they are still going to need fixing. Hoping that when I start on the drivers door it's not as bad. Quote
Azman1984 Posted February 8, 2015 Author Posted February 8, 2015 So after a big day out at hanging rock today looking at all the beautiful cars and some very nice looking Zed's. I have left the event questioning my color choice for when I paint the car. I had picked out a metallic green off the newer Commodores called "poison ivy" I had done a test paint of this on one of the front guards and originally I loved the look and still do, but am also worried how it will look when the whole car is that colour. Ah the joys of restoration and customisation I guess Quote
