Hey guys, Does anyone know what is required when purchasing an unregistered car interstate?

From what I've read it seems a sale receipt will do. It will need the current owners name, address, date of sale, rego number, and vin or chassis number. All this along with the owners signature should be enough?

There is also the security, stolen vehicle checks done prior to sale.

Cheers, Gareth.

I would also get the last copy of the rego papers of the vehicle as this will make it easier when you have it re-registered.

Would also get a copy of the registered owners licence or at least his/her licence number as another point of reference.

Whenever I have bought a car interstate have called my local Dept of Transport to see if they have any special requirements (best to ask rather than troll through the web page)

Hi Gareth

adding to the other comments, with my 300zx  I  gave my local Vic roads office the engine, Vin and Rego numbers they confirmed it was the same and told me it had not been written off prior to buying it.

I took in a bill of sale from previous owner (deceased estate) dated and signed by both parties, it still had the old plates I took them as well as a vic roadworthy, and it was registered and put in my name.

If an engine swap, with a new engine number, has occured, but was not notified to authourites, by prior owner, that tends to be an issue, when re-registering a car, as often a Tpt Authority will want to inspect the engine number.

Either an interstate car, or same state.

Great advice, and if possible ask in writing and get a written response.

But for NSW a copy of the old rego papers that match the cars current confiquration + signed bill of sale will go a long way.

I hope to be going through this myself later this year  ;)
