furstydrft Posted January 5, 2014 Posted January 5, 2014 Hey guys new member, I'm in the process of preparation for my P90 L28 build and just want to ask a few questions to people with the knowledge of these engines as I have never touched one. I'm looking to build a motor that has the ability to rev beyond 7000RPM but still maintain torque. As the engine will be mostly used for drifting but also a decent amount of street duties, a good strong torque curve is what I'm after. At first I was thinking an N42 head with porting/polishing/decking along with L28 flat top pistons, L24 rods and L24 crank sounded the go to get the revs on board, but with further research I may be able to make my goal in revs utilizing L28 crank, rods and flat top pistons, which in theory (I think) will give me a stronger torque curve (I think....) due to longer crank stroke. I'm looking towards a 10.5:1 compression on some triple weber carbs and a 0.68mm cometic head gasket. If 7000-7500RPM is achievable on L28 bits is it worth going an L24 crank/rod? Also second question, are there any reputable L series builders in NSW area that would be willing to sit down and have a proper chat with me, as well as guide me through building/tuning Quote
luvemfast Posted January 5, 2014 Posted January 5, 2014 P90 with flat top pistons will be no where near 10.5:1. More like 8.5:1 Do more research. You're nob where near where you want to be! Search is your friend. Look up PMC. Quote
DreamZproject Posted January 5, 2014 Posted January 5, 2014 This helped me alot in understanding the different combinations. Quote
dat2kman Posted January 5, 2014 Posted January 5, 2014 I race 'em. Got just what you need, Brand new forged componentry, fully match machined, ready for full assembly. Yes it will spin to 8000, peak hp at 7700, excellent torque from 5500 to 7000 Long motor only, you supply and set up induction. Sell at replacement cost. Or buy the book, " How to modify 240/260/280 Z engines" Quote
furstydrft Posted January 5, 2014 Author Posted January 5, 2014 My apologies guys, It was like 2am when I wrote this, I accidently wrote P90 instead of F54. I am using an N42 head Quote

DreamZproject Posted January 6, 2014 Posted January 6, 2014 Dat2kman, what is one of these wonderful engines you speak of worth? Quote
Moderators Zedman240® Posted January 6, 2014 Moderators Posted January 6, 2014 Not sure why I cringe when the words "Zed" and "drifting" are used in the same sentence... Probably work out cheaper to just get a 180SX with a SR20DET. Quote
pauly_adams Posted January 6, 2014 Posted January 6, 2014 I was going to start drifting my 280zx and I would be going turbo if I was you, its easier to get power and cost a lot less Quote
dat2kman Posted January 6, 2014 Posted January 6, 2014 Dat2kman, what is one of these wonderful engines you speak of worth? I work on principle of, If i have a complete same spec engine, in case i blow the engine in the car,,,, that Irishman Murphy, wont be visiting me! It has same internals and build spec as the race engine in my 280Z, which holds class lap records at a number of our tracks. It has been fully machined and is ready to assemble, ie, a prospective buyer can actually inspect, and confirm it is what it is, as opposed to some "yeah mate, she's fully built to go hard" etc, only to find you bought a stocko bit of rubbish! The racing i use these in has me in top 10, sometimes on outright pidium placings, in many events that i compete in! Quote
acf321 Posted January 7, 2014 Posted January 7, 2014 call Jimmy Flett at M.I.A Engine Services in Dee Why, or Stew Wilkins at SWMotorsport. Get it done properly first. Good luck. Quote
Scottz Posted January 9, 2014 Posted January 9, 2014 Hmmm.... L28 mods are expensive when you can go 20DET (or bigger) for less dollars. What's your definition of "rev beyond 7000rpm but still maintain torque"? Do you mean torque flat lines at 7000rpm and above, continues to increase or stays close to maximum? HP sells cars, torque wins races and I know nothing about drifting - other than it's all rpm. No straight lines. Think about this - Twin turbo L28 http://www.atlanticz.ca/zclub/techtips/turbo/index.html Quote
MJC Posted January 16, 2014 Posted January 16, 2014 Go and see the "Yoda" Stew Wilkins at SW Motorsport. Quote
