MATTY Posted January 26, 2013 Posted January 26, 2013 I'm just wondering on what you guys ( and possibly girls) on here think of the stanced look ie slamming cars insane wheel fitment/offset. personally i think its a taste thing but some cars look better with 15" mags and a nice big chunky tire with out having to be dropped on its guts.( like the Zed's ) or maybe im just sick of people who own sh*t boxes telling me i need MOAR low on my 260z? just food for though, but i'd like to know your thoughts and opinions. cheers Matty Quote
bullzed Posted January 26, 2013 Posted January 26, 2013 I've always been interested in the scene but would never class any of my cars as stanced but more old school shakotan styling. For example my Z used to be 35mm off the ground before it got defected. I also did the same thing to my Crown, dropped it on it's guts, probably 55mm ground clearance. Always loved the look of lowered cars, hate the practicality of them (and the police presence). Mind you I'm all chunky and stuff now seeing as I have to keep it legal, but it's by need, not choice. MATTY Posted January 26, 2013 Author Posted January 26, 2013 sweet 280 bullzed but you need to attend more downshitf meets to show the(QLD) Zeds are still in force i agree with you on the practicallity side (and the police side too!!) but even still as your's stands its still looks tough and its practical. i would like to lower mine alittle bit more but im happy as she sits now and hassle free from the police too, but my 180sx on the other hand lol (even with its fully sick fitment) tends to attract the police like fat kids to cupcakes :/ Quote
PZG302 Posted January 26, 2013 Posted January 26, 2013 Each to their own, but I prefer my cars to handle. My cars may end up with "fully sik stance bro", but not by design. The old Zed filled the guards with the 18x8 wheels and slicks but I wouldn't have called the car slammed or with fitment. The haidresser car is a bit lower than standard with the new coil overs, buut nothing stupid as you throw the geometry out more as you lower it and the MX5 is very suseptable to ride height and camber changes affecting the handling and driveability. Plus it runs relatively narrow 7" rims for the road and narrower 6 1/2" rims for the track. The 200 has fairly unimpressive 7 1/2" rims on it at the moment, and when the shell is built will be using rims up to 11" wide on the rear and 10" on the front depending on what a couple of engineers say re "overtyring" the car, minimum rim width will be 8". It all depends on what you want from your cars. In my case I want them to go round corners and stay on the road when you hiit a bump or two mid cornner. Quote
bullzed Posted January 26, 2013 Posted January 26, 2013 I thought I'd seen your Z at some downshift meets! I took the Crown last time as I'm trying to palm it off in order to spend a little more dosh on the Z and my new EP71 Starlet, but next meet will be my Z, I've got stevo with the white 240Z and then there's the blue 260 2+2 that frequents every now and then. MATTY Posted January 26, 2013 Author Posted January 26, 2013 ive been to a few DS meets in my 260Z. My plates are MYS30 btw if that helps, im trying to sell my daily( the 180sx) to spend more time(money) on my 260z too lol. be nice to catch up with a fellow zedder's at Feb's DS meet. the 2+2 you speak of wouldnt be jimmy's buy any chance the one with the Z on the bonnet? Administrators gav240z Posted January 26, 2013 Administrators Posted January 26, 2013 I favor performance over looks but I can't help but want to do this to my FD. Realistically I'll probably go a little more subtle though... The SSR's Professors / Work Meisters are probably not the lightest wheels out there but I'm a sucker for deep dish.. Quote
Administrators gav240z Posted January 26, 2013 Administrators Posted January 26, 2013 I should add that on a Z I prefer smaller diameter wheels with more tyre showing but a good deep dish. I still don't know if I can bring myself to hack up the guards for flares though. Quote
Six_Shooter Posted January 26, 2013 Posted January 26, 2013 I've been into watching imports and such for a long time, and I still can't find a good definition of "stanced". I do like the lowered, big wheel, deep dish (high offset?), rubber band tire, filling the wheel well, look, but I call that "Pro-touring", where the main objective is how the car functions. I find it interesting that people still to this day judge whether a car can drive well, based solely on a picture of the car on the internet. Quote
funkmaster Posted January 26, 2013 Posted January 26, 2013 The way i see it theres 2 categories Theres stanced then theres "Hellaflush", to try and put it in perspective i'll use some z pics i collected over the years haha Stance is not all about big wheels and deep dish and crazy offset. its about getting the car to look like its tough and means business. i do believe most people think its the former but would be more focused on getting a "flush" (a less aggressive version of hellaflush) look rather than good stance. Alot of the cars here and many many zed's have perfect stance. the way i see its a combo of the right wheel width, offset and tyre combo and height that achieves good stance. you dont need to the drop the car to the floor, you just need to get your offset right so that the wheel rim is almost if not in line with your wheel arch... wide rims always help as dish or concave can really enhance the look more than a flat face rim. From there its all about tyre combos, too stretched and you'll get too much of a wheel gap and need to lower the car alot, too fat and sometimes you can look like you're running on ballooned wheels you need just the right combo where you can fill up most of the gap without it looking too thin/small or too ballooned. Finally, you adjust the height to achieve that tough look. get it right and you wont sacrifice handling etc. (alot of the time attack and d1gp cars have great stance) stance, you can see its not slammed and theres still wheel gaps but the car just oozes toughness and means business. stance but geared more towards "flush" ie. no wheel gaps Hellaflush is the next step up from just a stanced car where you have the insanely dropped cars with big poked out rims, super stretched tyres, almost "Demon" camber and lowwww offset. The look they want to achieve is that the lines of the car flow straight to the wheels ie. no wheel gaps and not much tyre to be seen. its a very photogenic look, but that the same time you are sacrificing so much in terms of ride quality (scrapes and bottoms out on everything) the amount of guard work u need to do is crazy and you basically wreck the handling of the car with the height/camber you need to run. for australian roads you'd be silly to follow the hellaflush culture cause our roads are shiet, we've got speed humps and potholes everywhere. you'd be denting fenders and destroying the underbody of your car to achieve the look. heres an example of "hellaflush" in a zed. thats not that crazy unlike some other cars. personally, i'm all for stance. but its a fine art and you need to think about how to achieve it without sacrificing too much. most people have geared themselves more towards the hellaflush movement so you'll always get internet warriors saying that your car isnt low enough etc. build a car with the right stance they wont say a peep cause it just looks so tough. my 2 cents Quote
Ledge Posted January 26, 2013 Posted January 26, 2013 ^^^^^^^ Spot on Funky. I love stance, Not hellaflush. Think my Z has stance Cheers Paul Quote
acf321 Posted January 26, 2013 Posted January 26, 2013 i'm old(er), so 17+ " rims and rubber band tyres do nothing for me these days and I much prefer the look of a car 'in period'. Having said that, modern tyres are infinitely better in the larger profiles, and with suspension lowered to a sensible height and modern brake linings and so on, there's no reason that a 'period' look can't offer excellent ride and handling, that is a vast improvement on OEM. Here's a few Zeds that I think win the 'stance' awards. One is a genuine 432 with magnesium 15" watanabes, the other is Jim's car, also with 15" rims (incidentally the same as what I have arriving for my car this week). Quote
d3c0y Posted January 27, 2013 Posted January 27, 2013 I think good stance is essential to a good looking car and a big part of that is getting the offset of the rims so they come all the way out to the edge of the guard (obviously depending on a lot of other factors). If you have adjustable suspension then it isn't a big deal to change your setup for the track either. I think this guy has it pretty right in terms of zed stance: Taken from this thread: http://www.viczcar.com/forum/index.php/topic,7070.0.html I've got Wat R-Type 16 x 8.5 and 9.5 and im going to be running spacer with them to get them to sit right. 225/50/16 and 245/50/16 Quote
MATTY Posted January 27, 2013 Author Posted January 27, 2013 the rocky auto Zed looks the best it just has the right amount height, same with the blue 240 d3c0y posted up, both good examples but its all up to personal I've got Wat R-Type 16 x 8.5 and 9.5 and im going to be running spacer with them to get them to sit right. 225/50/16 and 245/50/16 surely you could get the Wat R types in a decent offset with out needing spacers. using spacers is like a woman will implants, sure they look good but can come off looking cheap (and its just not the same as a natural ones). hahah Quote
PZG302 Posted January 27, 2013 Posted January 27, 2013 So looking at the photos above, I then achieve stance and internet credits for chasing performance when you look at the photos below? Quote
Six_Shooter Posted January 27, 2013 Posted January 27, 2013 So looking at the photos above, I then achieve stance and internet credits for chasing performance when you look at the photos below? Yep, and you know, you must stop racing your car, because "Stance" cars don't perform. Quote
PZG302 Posted January 27, 2013 Posted January 27, 2013 And here is where I lose all my interwebs points for my car in non-stance mode. For wet races I was using only 15x7" rims with a 225/50/15 tyre, a bit different to the slicks..... Quote
d3c0y Posted January 27, 2013 Posted January 27, 2013 You loose points for your bent up grille too. surely you could get the Wat R types in a decent offset with out needing spacers. using spacers is like a woman will implants, sure they look good but can come off looking cheap (and its just not the same as a natural ones). hahah When you are talking millimeters of clearance you have to get your offset just right and Wats in 16" dont have a lot of choices when it comes to size and offset. I will swap the fronts to 9" as soon as the opportunity presents itself too. I think you will find that 90% of cars with bang on stance will run some sort of spacer to get it just right. the rocky auto Zed looks the best it just has the right amount height, same with the blue 240 d3c0y posted up, both good examples but its all up to personal Carbon Z has now switched to 16" TE-37Vs Quote
PZG302 Posted January 27, 2013 Posted January 27, 2013 You loose points for your bent up grille too. Because race car....... Quote
bullzed Posted January 27, 2013 Posted January 27, 2013 I can definitely respond to the fact that when a car has 'stance', it doesn't always mean it lacks in performance. I mean sure, oni-kyan definitely affects performance negatively but in my case, running my big chunky tyres has hindered my performance. I get way too much sideways shift on the rears due to high sidewall height and it's shocking in the wet, many many impromptu skids have been cut. I was way happier on the 205/50's, im switching back to my low slung ways as soon as the rain eases up, looks better, performs better but attracts more cop attention. Quote
d3c0y Posted January 27, 2013 Posted January 27, 2013 Just out of interest do you run shit or old tyres? Quote
thriller Posted January 27, 2013 Posted January 27, 2013 Everyone postin up weak s***. This is how it's done... Quote

be-zed Posted January 27, 2013 Posted January 27, 2013 I would like to be able to change the colour of the car at will just to confuse the competition . Quote
