  1. Good point. Moving it over
  2. Hey guys. Well I know it has been a while, but I have reached a stopping point on my 911 and it is time to start my Z build. This week I first needed to replace the front wheel bearings on the 911 so I could put wheels on it and move it out of the way. I then got into doing a stocktake on my Z to see what it needed, and start formulating a plan for the build. Here is the episode.
  3. ...unless you become a Firefighter
  4. Coming together nicely.
  5. Looking really good. Moving quickly, well done. J3
  6. Looking good. The Gazebo is a nice cheap handy shed. I am not sure how well they will stand up to the weather outside though. I would make sure it is well pegged down
  7. That thing is a beast!
  8. Yeah I got the car from Zak. Apparently he still has a heap of cars at his place, he just has a bunch at the wood yard too
  9. Haha, I have some background with painting, but most of the rest I stumble through. I am a firie, so I have the luxury of time off when everyone else is at work so I can tinker.
  10. Thanks Rudi. I still have to finish of the Porsche as a priority, but when I get to a stage of waiting for parts, etc, I will be able to move on to the Z. From the end of the 911 the Zed will be full steam ahead!
  11. Haha, I more thought you should feel old
  12. Thanks. I think it looks pretty good as far as rust goes, but that coat of primer could be hiding a multiude of sins.
  13. Hey guys, Well I have finally found a car to start my next project and it is a pretty decent '71 2 seater. This will be my next project as the Porsche winds down. I am not sure on the exact direction I am going to go with the build as far as engine and style. It wont be standard, that is all I know. Anyway here is the car. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kvHckyZrWWE Jeff (From here in to be known as J3).
  14. I did think about this one for a while, and I spoke to the owner, but by the time I got around to it he had someone coming for it. If i bought it, I would have probably bought a complete 2+2 as well to scavenge most of the parts from. It was just too far gone. The only value was the Cams log book, but even that is questionable.
  15. I suppose now I can officially be J3
  16. I paid a bit less than ask, but not a great deal. I don't know how long ago you got yours, but if it's a 2 seater that is stealing it in this market. It wasn't cheap, but I think it was a fair price, for a car with very little rust, and a heap of parts. Basically I have 2 of everything and if something is missing Zak will source it. I think the days of decent 2 seaters under $10k on the open market are long gone.
  17. We are moving towards a new style of world. Where a lot of people these days, are more mobile, so they want an apartment or a town house, over the old 1/4 acre block so they can come and go as they please, without worrying about the lawn being overgrown, etc. Kids aren't paying outside as much as they used to, just spending more and more time in front of screens (not saying that is a good thing). I grew up in Adelaide, and my family is still there. It is a very liveable city, and I could possibly see myself living there again (fantastic driving roads!). I think we are heading into a time where people don't need to live in a city anymore, they can work from anywhere as long you have a good internet connection. For me, after living in Sydney for almost 20 years, I moved to the NSW Southern Highlands, and I will never move back. I have the benefit of not having to live in the city, so I don't. I live on over half an acre, I don't have to deal with traffic, and I can walk to cafe's and restaurants, etc. Unfortunately the world is changing, and it is nice to reminisce about how things were, I think, like it or not, the only real option is to adapt with it.
  18. I agree that acrylic can be as good as 2 pack, but it very rarely is in the real world. Also the gloss does not last, and you will be forever chasing that shine. 2 pack is harder to buff, but it will retain it's shine, and it will generally give a really nice gloss off the gun. I worked as an airbrush artist for 13 years, working on the top show cars in the country, in over 50 different panel shops, and they all used 2 pack. I did come across 1 old spray painter who still used Acrylic, and I was very impressed with the finish he could get. But he had been doing it his whole life. I think, at least for amateurs, 2 pack will give a better result. For me at least, I very rarely cleared my artwork, but I have a more experience than most guys, and I have painted quite a few cars in acrylic, and when I changed over I wondered why I hadn't earlier.
  19. Acrylic is about the same to touch up if you are using a metallic, as you will have to clear the whole panel again, and in my experience it is never as glossy, and always looks like an acrylic job. It is not bad, but 2 pack is better.
  20. That sounds like it is the code, 362. When you go to the paint shop, ask them for 197X Datsun Dark Purple Metallic code 362 and hopefully they should be able to look it up on their system. Some of these old paint codes don't alwys come up though, but give it a go. Sometimes just the name is enough. Watch a heap of youtube videos to learn the best way to prep things, etc, and give it a crack. Do a little bit of practice first though. If you have a spare panel/piece of gal/44 gallon drum give it a go with that first to learn your gun, etc. I am not a spray painter by the way, but you are welcome to ask any questions if you like, or even better ask someone who knows more than me
  21. I must also add, that if you watch that spray booth video, you need to watch the second one I did, with some of the initial issues sorted out, and several improvements.
  22. Oooh. I like that. I might have to find myself one of them.
  23. I think it is a common misconception. 2 pack is nasty stuff so you have to make sure you have the correct mask etc. You can have a look at my video on how to build a spray booth if you like. I have found it works really well and didn't cost that much, and I have found it works great for smaller cars. Anyone can pick a a spray gun and have a go at painting acrylic, but it always looks pretty average, no matter how much you buff it. The best way I can put it, is with acrylic you have a very narrow window between spraying too dry and getting runs. That window I find is much larger with 2 pack, and with a small amount of practice you can do a pretty decent job.
