  1. Google Smiths Tachs and it will explain how different types work. If you check out my thread " XR700 ignition failure" in this section you can see how my tacho is hooked up to work. My car is a 75 model but I had three tachos from different years so god knows which one found its way back in the car. BTW my wiring is not as per Enzo's or the Z wiring book but it works.
  2. Thanks David, I have an old book that is nearly fallen apart and it shows the wiring the same as yours. As I said before if I do it the same as the diagram the tacho wont work but how I have got it the tacho works. Motor runs in both configerations. I will just leave it as it is and see if I get another 6 years out of this controller. Thanks for all your help. Peter.
  3. So what dizzy do you use with this set up? Cheers.
  4. I have the standard 1975 Datsun tach. My mates 76Z is wired the same as Enzo's. As far as I can see my wiring is normal as if you change the wires about they don't reach their terminals. The 5v on the coil- is the worring point as my mate has 9.6 on coil plus and 8.4 on coil - with engine running. Maybe I should not worry as engine goes OK the way it is.
  5. Hi David, If I wire as per your car, my Tacho doesn't work but car still runs. Readings as per my way as follows with motor running. B/W in rest 14v B/W out rest 8v - coil Y 5v +coil R/GW 8v Resistor is very, very hot. is this normal? Peter.
  6. I have got a on off thermos switch in line in the top rad hose. About the only time the fans turn on is after I have stopped. The big kick arse chinese radiator keeps it running cool. Page 18 of my build thread. Fans are run through a relay I have the craig davis switches that come with the fans if you want them.
  7. You may have missed the point. I am looking to see if I have the XR700 wired correctly. See mud map below. Is this how your XR700 is wired up if you are running one of them.
  8. Niceonewelcome.
  9. I don't have any issues with the XR700 except it died after about 6 years. I have purchased a new XR700 and the car goes again and revs out quite well. As far as I want to take it anyway My car is a 75 2+2 and I have the unit wired up as per the following mud map if you can follow it. The question I have is this the same as other people have their units wired up. It is not as per instructions but is the only way the car will run. Again how does this compare. Cheers Peter.
  10. Hi David, yes mate I use the ballast resistor and a Bosh GT40R coil. Has never given me any trouble but the other week it just died. I have ordered a spare unit to shove in the glove box. The optical pick up in the dissy is still ok so I will have a complete spare unit. Peter T.
  11. About 7 years ago I had my L26 head reconed and UMR engines told me the same. All ok to run unleaded. I still chuck a bit of Morleys in the tank now and again though to be sure, to be sure.
  12. I can help with one as long as you buy the L28 that it is bolted to. LOL
  13. Hi all, Just wondering what the life of the Crane XR700 ignition units would be. I couldn't get the Z to go a couple of weeks ago and finally narrowed it down to the crane ignition unit. Ordered a new one from Outlaw Speed Shop in SA and it arrived o'night in the post. Have just swapped it over and away she goes. The original unit is about six years old. To be on the safe side I just ordered another unit to keep in the boot for a spare. Would hate to be away somewhere and have it fail again.
  14. Good luck mate, and once again thanks for your help.
  15. Hi mate I am interested in these also and would you send to Qld if I stand the freight. Cheers Peter T.
  16. That's fair enough. I thought the word refurbished would explain that this was a standard engine as I listed all the new bits that were used in this endeavour. Go to my build thread for more pics of this engine being built. Page 20. Link is the blue writing down the bottom.
  17. Why do you waste peoples time by asking stupid questions if you already know the answers?
  18. Yes. When heads are reconed they are skimmed so I don't see much point in putting flat tops in a road car engine. If you want a race engine this ones not for you.
  19. F54 block N42 head. Standard pistons, recon head.
  20. Go the aftermarket ones and flick the strap off.
  21. I have a refurbished L28 engine for sale. F54 Block N42 Head. New rings, bearings, gaskets, water pump, timing chain kit, welsh plugs, ARP complete engine bolt kit, seals. Parts supplied by SWM. Head reconed by UMR engines and motor assembled by qualified mechanic. Block has been honed and standard dished pistons used in this build. Needs new or the old oil pump fitted. Prefer pick up from Loganholme. I have listed it on gumtree for $5000 which is about what it cost me in parts alone but willing to do a deal for a member. Build details are on my build thread with pics. Build thread link is below and is the blue writing bit. SOLD>
  22. As the topic suggests anyone going to Sirromet Wines on Sunday. Get there early.
  23. Hi mate did the sale go through?
  24. Got them working . Thanks blokes.
  25. I will put my spare set in that rotate fully and are greased with copper grease and see how I go. The rubber boot is stuffed so will have to go without. Can I use Holden wiper arms and do they fit OK.?
