  1. The +ve cable is coming from the front of the car because as an alternative to drilling a hole in my firewall (which is apparently illegal but always overlooked) I realised that I could run the +ve cable through the air vent which takes air from the front of the engine bay to the passenger footwell. Also I don't own a decent drill or any drill bits that are suitable! I used a set of pliers on the lug to crimp it, it seems to be on pretty tightly. That was an option I toyed with but I wasn't really feeling up to it. Surely it's not going to be an issue? I worked for an electrician for a few months between school and uni so I remember a couple of his lessons about wiring. I graduate in December. I just wrote the 14 thousandth word in my thesis today..
  2. Installed the amp but haven't attached the +12v to the battery or put a fuse in it. Amp located behind seat, not in final position so don't worry about the lean: This shows how the wires were run, the signal wire is the one that tells the amp to turn on when the head unit does: Due to the nature of the seats I had to run the leads within 5" of each other in this location. I don't see it being a huge issue: Here you can see the battery terminal and fuse holder: Here was where I ran the +12V wire in the engine bay: Just proving that you can't see any of the cables when everything was put back: ..except where they go into the amp: Also I think I might have removed the earth for the head unit by accident when I attached the amp earth wire to the same location. As such I haven't got a working head unit atm so I need to find time to take the centre console out again and see what's up. To test how good the earth location was I got my trusty multimeter out and found the voltage drop to exactly the same number between the +ve terminal and the -ve terminal as it was between the +ve terminal and the bolt under the centre console. Any comments or questions?
  3. In situations like this where a post is a year old please PM the poster, don't resurrect the thread. Cheers

  5. I must have forgotten! My mechanic probably did it for me back in the day. Yeah the rubber boot is the piece i'm after. I'm sure they can be found on msa or somewhere similar i just don't want to purchase them from America unless i'm combining the postage with other stuff.
  6. Thanks for the opinions guys. Here's a thought. Couldn't I leave the earth wire until last and then test it to see whether the location of the earth has any audible effect on the sound quality? To save having to cut an extra large hole in the firewall I'd prefer to earth it to one of the bolts that connects the centre console to the transmission tunnel, which is where I currently have my head unit earthed. I'm planning on locating the amp unit behind the passenger seat. I think I'll screw it into the little wall that makes up part of the storage compartment for the wheel chocks. Shaun suggested that I run the speaker wire down the left side of the passenger footwell and run the power wires down the right side of the same footwell but approximately 2 feet away. This would be easiest in terms of reducing the amount of interior parts that would be removed.
  7. Hey Brad, here's a question firmly in your field. Shaun thinks that I should try and earth the amp to the battery, rather than to the car body. I understand the principle, but I'm not sure if would actually make much of a difference? Surely as long as I bolt the wire to a nice large contact surface it would earth sufficiently?
  8. Let me know how you go with that piece, I need one too. Are you sure you have the right gearbox? I didn't think 280zx boxes required a change in the transmission tunnel.
  9. Cool, will do Brad. Yeah I have AC Dimitri
  10. Appreciate the help Brad. I'm probably a couple months away from actually starting on it, just purchasing bits to be ready. I'll still use one of the speedhut faces so it matches all of my other gauges, saves a bit of hassle there. In other news, Shaun and I stopped in at JB hi-fi and picked up my new sound system components. I decided that the incredibly low sound power of the single 30 year old speaker wasn't enough anymore. So the components are a 2 channel Kicker amp (2x 70W RMS) and a pair of Pioneer TSA6973E 6x9s (80W RMS). As usual I'm not sure when I'll find the time to actually install these bad boys. One question I have for you guys is this: We were unable to find a spare firewall hole to run the amp wiring through. I was thinking that I might be able to simply drill a hole (probably close to the back of the glovebox), seal it with paint and install an aftermarket rubber grommet bought from autobahn or supercheap. Does that sound reasonable? Any alternatives?
  11. About time I posted an update, usual story thesis = too busy blah blah.. I've just ordered one of the VDO Tachos and will probably have a go with it later this year. I'm guessing the wiring won't be too difficult between the dizzy and the tacho. I might need to consult with you a couple of times before I'm ready to touching the wiring though Brad. I'm currently looking around at 6x9s and an amp to suit the speakerbox Shaun made earlier this year. Will be good to get some decent sound after listening to the one tinny speaker in the back for 3 years hehe.
  12. Hmm interesting. It is a pretty cool trailer. I'm thinking that posting here is solely for the purpose of increasing the ranking in google?
  13. Eh I'll just have my party on a different weekend. I'm in!
  14. Sorry gav, I've been a bit slack in getting the photos taken. Doing them this Sunday so should be good for a feature soon!
  15. Damn! My birthday is the 21st and I was planning on having a big one. I'd still like to come but I'm not 100%. I'll see what other options I have for dates and get back to you.
  16. Hey mate, I like what I'm reading. I'm too short on time nowadays to attempt such a project but I will be VERY keen to hear how it goes if you decide to take this route. If it does end up working theres an excellent chance I'll follow in your footsteps! The UV solution didn't really work out that well for me. Looking forward to hearing more! Stephen
  17. Oh fair enough. I'm sorry - clearly I missed that.
  18. That is completely inappropriate. It adds nothing. Please do not post unless you have some kind of information, constructive criticism or if the creator asked for opinions.
  19. I think the OP was looking for a registered car club, not a forum.
  20. Welcome and congrats. Z car club of qld should be able to help you out with the slip. We need some pics
  21. Pictures of these are in the first post.
  22. Surely a professional exhaust shop could fix that 2K RPM resonance. Isn't it just a matter of adding the resonator at the correct location to change the resonant frequency?
  23. I'm going to party that night but I'm also available during the day.
