Guys Just a reminder the NDSOC Show n Shine is on this Sunday Entry is via pearl River Road off Dockalnds Drive Cars must be in by 8.30 am and in situ until 3pm cheers Alan

Standard L26 compression is around 8.5:1 so no advantage in using Octane > 92......just wasting $$$ on fuel Install flat top pistons, this will increase comp to approx 9.6:1 and use 98 octane.....immediate 10-15% HP/torque

Guys I read the comments regarding drivability with triple carbs and cannot grasp why some think they cannot be as smooth and tractable as fuel injection.....the simple answer is spend some money and GET THEM TUNED BY A PROFFESIONAL ON A DYNO. Apart from minor cold start hesitation (I didn't connect the chokes), my 44 Mikuni's are as smooth as silk with no hesitation at all.......no flat spots ,no stumble, no back firing, no over fueling....just smooth progressive acceleration.........the difference is that they were refreshed and tuned properly. Whilst I cannot comment on Webers, Mikuni's are just as tractable as EFI .............if any body doubts that feel free to drive my Zed and see for yourself. Whilst EFI certainly has advantages with fuel consumption, cold start and fine tuning/mapping .................smooth power delivery should not be a problem with correctly set up triple carbs........IMHO anyway Al.

Plumbing breather to airbox or catch can, what is best?
260Coupe replied to Riceburner's topic in Fuel Systems
I couldn't agree more.........venting crank case gas to the atmosphere is the first thing the EPA/constabulary check for (I know from experience) and there is little/no measurable gain on the dyno for venting to a catch can rather than re-burning the gases. If you are installing an air box then plumb in the rocker cover and crank case vent. my 2c Al. -
Lindsay at the Zed Shop here in Melb usually stock them zshop.net.au

Guys I was in Stuckey's today looking for a fresh set of rubber for both the track car (Roadster) and the road going Zed. I'd heard good reports on the new Direzza Z1's and Russell Stuckey reckons they are only 1 sec off the pace from their latest R spec track tyre the DZ03G. The Z1 is placed as gap filler between a full blown R spec tyre (soft compound and 5mm tread depth) and a road tyre with harder compound and 8mm tread. Anyway- to be only a second off the pace seemed a big call ..............Any let me know if anyone has tried these cheers http://www.dunloptires.com/en-US/tires/direzza-z1-starspec-tires

I was pulled over earlier this year for a road side RBT and road worthy check and apart from the wind screen washers not working (due to a kink in the water line) all was fine .........nothing was said about the airbox and induction system on my Zed. The first thing checked was the crank case vent which I pointed out was connected back into the air box as was the rocker cover vent, I also had a noise test and all good . -

Gav The air box is fitted to my Triple 44 Mikuni's so yes it will definitley fit , and Webers as well...........the variable is the length of the intake manifold. If you have a minimum 120mm between the carb throttle body and the strut tower it will fit The plan was to make the airboxes with a solid back plate so it can be used for 40's, 44's 45's etc, so it can be used on Dellorto's etc as well. I can make a template for the holes so it will be easy to mark out the back plate for drilling to suite Mikuni 44's and Weber's will be very close. For the period look, you can get them painted to a colour of choice rather than leave it in natural C/F as the finish would be clear gell coated and smooth. cheers Al. -

Depth is approx. 90mm at the front carby and 75mm at the rear leaving around 30mm clearance between the lid and the strut tower (on Zed) I don't have the time to collate interest so if someone would like to take this on and collect deposits, once a $1000 is raised I'll get the mould underway (fully refundable if the deal falls over for what ever reason). Backing plates will be blank to allow multi use applications, as I'll need to remove the entire induction system to take the airbox off the carbs, if/when enough interest is raised I'll start the ball rolling again and confirm pricing, hopefully the $400 each mark should still cover costs. The benefits as stated previously are more mid range torque, far less noise and you can plumb in the crank case and rocker cover vents to comply with EPA regs (catch cans are not EPA friendly). The set up looks factory fitted and can be used with a 280z filter housing (from the US S30 with the injected L28 easy found on ebay) which bolts straight in front of the radiator and far superior to pod filters (again proven by dyno testing) . Anyway guys I'm happy to go to the effort to get the air boxes made but l'll have to leave it up to one of you to champion the cause and collate interest and chase deposits. cheers Alan -
They would have been gell coated with a smooth finish so could have been left natural (for those who like C/F) or painted any colour and would have looked just like the original, the Prince box was a cherry red, I powder coated mine orage to match the 240 Z air box. To make them out of F/G would have made them three time as thick to get the same ridigity........you don't what the airbox collapsing under full throttle.

I have a GT-B airbox which I modified to fit my 44 Mikuni's, I offered to get a mould made and get them reproduced in carbon Fibre (for rigidity) a couple years back before the engine was reinstalled but I needed a minimum commitment of 10 x units and they would have been approx. $400 each ex ram tubes..................and yes they fit under a strut brace, you just need to relocate the coil. Needless to say I got plenty of "yeah count me ins" unit I asked for a $100 deposit ..............and none were forth coming.......alas many like to experiment with modified rocker covers and un-tested air boxes This airbox was dyno tested and proven to improve mid range torque by approx. 10% and not rob any top end HP, as tested on my warmed over L26 and Gerhard Metz's L3.1 stroker. If I can get 10 x serious orders then I'll look into getting them produced again. cheers Alan

Ditto for 3 Bond.............use what modern cars use

The old adage applies .............you get what you pay for I recently sold my Z31 S2 manual turbo, excellent cond with no rust (yes garaged all its life and only 145km on the clock)......as part of preventative maintenance I'd replaced all injectors and wiring harness connectors(all geniune sourced from the US) new cooling system, springs and Koni sport shocks, new genuine clutch and fresh tyres.......nothing to spend except for aircon regas (sold with replacement condensor to replace pin holed orginal). Original paint in excellent cond with no previous accident damage.............the Zed drove beatifully and sold for a bargain at $6700. So yes whilst some may say $3k should buy a good one........but what is your definition of a good one .? Al.

"What would really be great is if NDSOC were more proactive in attracting the membership base on here to be a part of their club, get the 25-35 guys in, make the plates easy to get, and then we could have a club to join, and their club won't die out in 20 years when they all kick the bucket." Interesting observation- I'm glad I was of some help but you seem to have made your mind up after one brief encounter The average age of the NDSOC membership is probably mid thirties............the white hair brigade your spotted was the Prince Skyline "Mafioso".......a bunch of great "old blokes" who love their cars. The Prince register affiliated with the NDSOC back in '95 ,and that saved them from extinction and gave them access to many great events. I'll get the old blokes to dye their hair ! I suggested a Vic Z affilition some years ago and was shouted down by a few.........so I gave up . We have many younger members and I have been actively encouraging those on this forum to join in ..........like any club you only get out what you put in ............and some who have only attended one meeting and go away with the impression that we are hard to get along with or we don't show them enough attention. This is certainly not intentional and often not the case...........we all get caught up talking to people we have known for years and often the newby may feel left out if they are not pro active and make them selves known they may be left out. I joined the NDSOC nearly 25 years ago and it took me a few meetings to get to know everyone and find my "place"within the club.................you cannot expect this to occur in one brief encounter. There seems to be a few who are quite negative towards the NDSOC however they seem to be the ones who have never been a member and given it a chance or those who turn up to one meeting and expect all the attention to be on them from the moment they walk in the door..(the "all about me "syndrome) .....again you only get back what you put in to any club. As to the öldies on the committee............that is purely because we cannot get any young members to volunteer their time .........so it is always left to the old blokes. I think Peter Mc, Simon Ray, Dimitri, Ash Mc. and many others can attest to how great the club is ..........but they have put the time in. (Simon, Dimitri and Ash also have permit plates and they can confirm how easy the process was.............we do not make it intentional hard to get a permit plate) Hope to see you at a meeting/event Alan

As I have stated I support the idea of a new club and wish you luck however whilst I do not push anyone to join the NDSOC ....the club you describe already exists here in Vic and that you may be trying to re-invent the wheel. Al.

Sheldon - I was not suggested you were canning the NDSOC , I was just clarifying a few points as to why it is important for a club to be financially secure. On the subject of permit plates It seems that you think getting permit plates are hard? That may be the case if your vehicle is modified far beyond the intent of the scheme and you wish to take short cuts around the process The NDSOC does not require a RWC or Engineers Certs in all cases, we can issue a letter of safetly for most vehicles even with light mods (including disc converstions if done professionally and a brake test is provided), if the mods are major and club scrutineer deems it outside what he can sign off (major suspension/brake mods) then a RWC may be required as this removes the saftey onus off the club. Engine refits outside of the original family (L series to RB etc) will require engineers cert. as per the Vic roads rules. As far as your comments regarding the AOMC and Vic roads go........ The AOMC campaigned for the original permit scheme on behalf of all affiliated clubs and again for the 90 day log book which came into play in Feb 2011........i can confirm this as I was at the meetings with Vic roads/AOMC and the car clubs over the past 4 years. The Association of Motor clubs was/is the voice of all affiliated car clubs and whilst membership may now not be manditory for a club to be granted a permit to issue club plates, the guidelines formulated for the scheme were the basis of the representations made to Vic Roads and which have been adopted by the majority of clubs on the permit scheme. I was also at the meetings where the Vic Roads representatives where clear that the CPS was not to be an avenue for "cheap rego" for cars that would otherwise not be registerable...(this subject among others delayed the introduction of the 90 day log book by two years) .......hence why most clubs follow the guidelines. Of the 100 + cars on permit plates, we have quite a number of Zeds (and other marques) that have coil overs, big brakes etc and all owners were quite OK with getting RWC's if asked to do so as they understood that the club could not be held responsible if there was a safety issue exposed in the event of an accident. (many on this forum are NDSOC members with permit plates including Simon, Dimitri , Ash etc............the process for obtaining a plate was simple) If your model for the CPS allows mods without the "insurance"of a RWC (as this is cheap and easy) you may be exposing the "club" to an unacceptable risk - including the committee who signed off the issue of the permit plate . Food for thought for prospective committee members of the proposed new club regards Alan
