Administrators gav240z Posted February 6, 2014 Administrators Posted February 6, 2014 Just realised original course link is dead. Try this 1. https://www.tafensw.edu.au/howex/servlet/Course?Command=GetCourse&CourseNo=29588&tpInd=Y Quick bump as this starts next week on the 11th. Not sure if anyone else has enrolled from here? But if not I'll be so ronery Quote
Administrators gav240z Posted February 10, 2014 Administrators Posted February 10, 2014 For those who have done this course before, should I bring a panel in to start working on in the first class or is it mainly a safety and intro session first night? Guess I can call and ask also. Quote
Brabham Posted February 10, 2014 Posted February 10, 2014 Hi Gav, at St.Leonards which is probably similar the first 6 months are spent teaching you all the metal forming techniques that you will need to repair different shapes. After that, then you can start bringing in stuff to work on. They may start you on panels earlier. My only regret with this course is not doing it 10 years earlier before the fees went through the roof. I'm sure you will want to keep doing it, I love it. Cheers Quote
Administrators gav240z Posted February 11, 2014 Administrators Posted February 11, 2014 Actually they moved me to the Wednesday night class due to the first 1 being a bit over booked as some more experienced folks decided to return. So they have 2 groups now. I assume I'm in the newbie group. I'll let you know how it goes after tonight. Quote
Administrators gav240z Posted February 12, 2014 Administrators Posted February 12, 2014 So just an update for those who are considering doing this course in future. Today I took a piece of sheet metal, cut it out into the shape of a motorcycle gas tank and then proceeded to beat it into shape, giving it a 3 dimensional feel. I used the English wheel, hammer and dolly mostly. I actually had trouble using the tin-snips - seems funny but it's hard to cut the metal with them unless you use the appropriate technique. Anyway the piece I created is looking quite good, or at least I'm happy with the way it looks all things considered and given it's my first go. The others in the class seemed to get it quite quick and seemed a bit more used to using their hands than I. I felt a bit like the slower 1, that's what working in an office will do for you though. But overall it was a good experience and it does make the road ahead feel less daunting. It is only the first week though so I don't want to speak too soon, but I'm glad I'm doing this now and even re-evaluating if I'll even buy patch panels from the likes of rare spares etc.. seems it might be better to make some of these things from scratch like door skins, roofs and even floors, but let's see how we go! Administrators gav240z Posted February 13, 2014 Administrators Posted February 13, 2014 By the way I think it was mentioned earlier in this thread, but Mark is the guy who was running last nights class. His business is here: http://natolipanelcreations.com.au/ He also does Youtube videos: http://www.youtube.com/channel/UC8EF5GgqJK0ZnQaFd_ur8gw Quote
CroS13 Posted February 13, 2014 Posted February 13, 2014 god dam it, the only reason i didn't sign up is St George is such a drive from my area. im all the way out west. Wetherill park tafe is literally 2 streets away from my house, and all the mechanical and bodywork/ panel beating tafe courses for your apprenticeships are there. Thats where i went for my apprentership. Why o why couldn't they have run it there instead, i would be the first person to sign up. Im guessing that the Tafe teacher who runs the course lives closer to that area. Take some photo's of your work next week Gav, i want to see it being created on my screen week after week! Rudolf. Administrators gav240z Posted February 13, 2014 Administrators Posted February 13, 2014 Haha, I was going to take a photo of it, but will try next week. Provided I don't make a mess of things, but that's all part of the learning process I guess. Quote
Administrators gav240z Posted April 28, 2014 Administrators Posted April 28, 2014 Bump - classes are starting again tomorrow, right now it's full up but they are looking at running a second class. So please call Kristen O'Brien on 02 9217 5270 to express your interest in attending this quarter. Some people were asking about photos of the work I did in the class and apart from the ones in the build thread I thought I'd share these also. We basically hand made this panel from a flat square bit of steel. Starting with a paper template. You cut out something like this And then you end up with something that looks roughly like this. andyk_79 Posted June 30, 2014 Posted June 30, 2014 So is anyone planning on attending next term ? Presume it starts in 2 to 3 weeks ? Whilst I can't find any real rust on mine yet I'm still interested. Some people from the eBay thread may remember the dodgy bubbles in the passenger side sugar scoop - ended up only being badly prepped area so paint has bubbled, but am willing to bet I'll find something one day! Quote
Administrators gav240z Posted June 30, 2014 Administrators Posted June 30, 2014 I'll be going again most likely. It starts in a few weeks (Around 20th of July) I'm told I'll be emailed. They also have a sandblasting cabinet and paint booth at the Tafe so you could spend time fixing up your dodgy sugar scoop. I highly recommend it, if you've always wanted to learn new skills and wanted to be confident with doing body work. I really enjoy it, although I have my moments where I question my sanity. Quote
Administrators gav240z Posted July 18, 2014 Administrators Posted July 18, 2014 This is starting again around the 29th of July (Tuesday nights). I've spoken to them today and said I'm interested in attending again. You can call the paint and auto-body section on this number. (02) 9217 4112 Quote

Administrators gav240z Posted February 9, 2015 Administrators Posted February 9, 2015 Back on again this year, unfortunately their enrollment system is an absolute mess at the moment. But it should be on tomorrow night. I think the current contact person is: Jing li 02 9217 5270. Otherwise try contacting the tafe and asking for someone who can help with enrolling in "Introduction to vehicle restoration". I called: Geoffrey White P: (02) 9217 4112 Who put me through to Jing Li Quote
Administrators gav240z Posted February 28, 2015 Administrators Posted February 28, 2015 After a series of technical hiccups the Tafe Enrolment system appears to be working. Course resumes Tuesday night and will be longer classes over shorter week span. http://sydneytafe.edu.au/course-details/165-29588V01/tafe-plus-statement-in-introduction-to-vehicle-restoration#results You should be able to enrol online via that link. If you're interested. Cost is around $525 or so. Quote
import monky Posted February 28, 2015 Posted February 28, 2015 Hey Gav, You gonna enrol in this class? I am seriously contemplating. I will give them a call on Monday and see if there are spots left. Cheers for the information. Quote
Administrators gav240z Posted February 28, 2015 Administrators Posted February 28, 2015 I've paid up and enrolled today, so yep back in class in Tuesday. Quote
andyk_79 Posted April 9, 2015 Posted April 9, 2015 Not sure if I am repeating old ground here, but St Leonards TAFE is also doing a "Panel Beating for Enthusiasts" course now. I'm guessing it will take a similar form to the course at St George. Details here: http://www.nsi.tafensw.edu.au/Courses/CourseDetail/panel-beating-for-car-enthusiasts/tafe-plus-statement/158-25556V01 Quote
Administrators gav240z Posted April 9, 2015 Administrators Posted April 9, 2015 I believe member Brabham is attending at that location. Quote
Brabham Posted April 13, 2015 Posted April 13, 2015 Yep St.Leonards now has 2 classes up and running, Tuesday and Wednesday. It will run to the end of the year, but is uncertain beyond that. Quote
andyk_79 Posted April 13, 2015 Posted April 13, 2015 Oh cool - I was looking at the Tuesday but my wife has also been looking at something on a Tuesday night so Wednesday might be a good option. Will call them and see if any spots left. Quote
Administrators gav240z Posted April 28, 2015 Administrators Posted April 28, 2015 This is back on again tonight (cancelled last week due to Sydney storms). Not sure if there is any space remaining. Quote
