pauly_adams Posted June 9, 2007 Posted June 9, 2007 hey all i was wondering if any 1 has put a 350 holley on a z. also what are your appinions about this Quote
modular9 Posted June 11, 2007 Posted June 11, 2007 funny here i am dirty as hell trying to match to mismatched SU's ( the dashpots are different with different springs so the pistons move up and down at a different rate ) and i nearly threw them in the bin I am looking at a pair of solex jobbies on ebay but ... I too would love to know what the gains/disappointments are as 350 holleys are very easy to tune and i have 2 of em in my garage. Quote
Administrators gav240z Posted June 11, 2007 Administrators Posted June 11, 2007 Generally the consensus on putting holley carbs on a Zcar is not to do it. The standard SU's are a great carbuerettor when tuned and rebuild properly. The problem is many don't understand how they work and how to sync them. In many cases the throttle shaft requires rebushing and can cause a vacuum leak making tuning nearly impossible. Incorrect dashpot springs and the wrong oil in the dashpots can cause issues. Using sewing machine oil seems to be the key here. Once you have them nicely rebuilt with the correct needles and seats. Tuning should be quite easy and you can buy a unisyn which measures airflow when held up to them. Getting mixture right can be achieved a few different ways but generally set them lean to start with and take it for a spin. After coming back check colour of spark plugs, black means too rich and a very light brown means too lean. You want a nice brown colour. However you will get a feel for what works and what doesn't by driving the car. Then it's all about electrical timing. This has been covered quite a few times on various Z car forums. Do a search and see what you turn up. My advice stick with the SU's, in many parts of the world there are 12 second Zcars running SU's still . Quote
nat0_240_chevZ Posted June 11, 2007 Posted June 11, 2007 someone i know has a 350 holley on an l28, it runs really well, but setting up the linkages to run it or using a cable is probably the hardest part in the swap besides sourcing a manifold so it just bolts straight on. (i think i know of one for sale!!! ) also find that the holley used is not tuned very vell but it still goes hard, (a bit rich down low up to about 3k), but if youre ok with carbies in general its not hard to get a holley in song. nato Quote
JP240z Posted June 11, 2007 Posted June 11, 2007 I have both tried and failed to put a throttle cable onto my 240, when I bought my car it came without linkages or carbs, and it also came with what I thought was a 350 or 450 holley, it turned out to be a 750. After buying a set of twin hitachis, I still thought it would be best to try the cable set up, after trying to mount it on the rocker cover, I realised that the semi circle piece that sits on the end of the throttle shaft would have to be far too big to get proper throttle range. So I decided to go to linkages straight away and in a few minutes, had a perfect throttle system. Quote
road rider Posted June 12, 2007 Posted June 12, 2007 hey all i was wondering if any 1 has put a 350 holley on a z. also what are your appinions about this I have driven 3 Z cars that have been set up with a Holley carb. Holley carbs do work rather well no disrespect to the old faithful SU's and Z purist out there! It's amazing how well a 350/two barrell or a 500/4barrell carb works if it is set up right, especially on a worked engine. The biggest problem is getting a manifold that works well. I know you can get one from the states from Arizona Z car(I think thats the name) Otherwise the only other option is a early 240k manifold and an adaptor plate and plenty of porting. Even then your airflow is pretty restricted with the K manifold. One good thing is that parts, especially jets are cheap compared to webbers and are readily available just about anywhere here in Oz. There's a older bloke that lives out Essendon way that drives a 260Z 2+2, set up with a 350 holley and a worked L28 bottom end. Gotta say this car gets up and boogies. And thats with a restrictive 240k manifold. He had the linkage set up retained for the accelerator. Looked quite neat. Pretty sure his name was Denis and he said a Z mob out Altona way had set it up for him a few years ago. Quote
pauly_adams Posted June 13, 2007 Author Posted June 13, 2007 i dont know if it is a 350 or a 500 duel barrel but as for the manifold i was going to get mine cut and re welded for a holley carb dont know if i will go linkages or cable any 1 got ideas how to set up a cable cheers pauly Quote
luvemfast Posted June 13, 2007 Posted June 13, 2007 Why don't we all sell our Z's and get commodores and falcons........... Hang on, I have one of each of them too. I'm not a purist, really, but to me a Z should have at least 2 carbies, preferably 6 throats with ram tubes sticking out the side. Its not about drivability, its about the noise. Set the SU's up right and they should give no trouble. If you want it to drive nicer, inject it. Or RB conversion (see I'm not a purist). Just my thoughts.........can of worms maybe Quote
road rider Posted June 13, 2007 Posted June 13, 2007 Holleys do make a great sound as well as do SU's.But I think webbers/dellorto and injection(set up on a webber type manifold with ram tubes, which make em sound a lot like webbers) get my vote for the pure sound factor. Pauley, I haven't seen a cable set up so can't really comment. You might have to research the web to see what people have done. There are a lot of Z's in the states that have gone for the Holley conversion. So I guess you should be able to find some info hopefully. Quote
Enzo Posted June 15, 2007 Posted June 15, 2007 Hi Guys, hese Holley manifolds are available from Arizonazcars.com . These are a four barrel manifold using a 390 Holley. Small primaries for economy with larger secondaries for the extra get up and go. Quote
