vramjee91 Posted March 16, 2012 Posted March 16, 2012 Hey guys, Been reading all your treads and I must say, there is some serious work being done to many Z cars around the country, inspired me to start work on one of my own! Ever since I was a kid, I’ve had this massive fascination with Z-cars, and it’s weird cause no one in my family had ever owned or had driven one. All I’ve seen were pictures in magazines and that’s about it. So anyway, I start Uni this year, and figured I would have some spare time to finally start one of my dream cars. Towards the end of last year I purchased a 1974 Datsun 260z 2+2 from Leo in Sydney. I purchased it on Ebay for about $2,750 + $350 in transportation. I know what you guys are thinking, “why on earth did I purchase a bus” but there were two reasons for this, one is that I like the fact of having some seats in the back, just in case a couple of people need a life, and two because its heaps cheaper than a 240z and being a uni student there was no way of being able to spend that much $$. Once it arrived I had to change the fuel pump, as the old ones gasket was gone, and it drove AMAZINGLY!! Love the rawness of the car, and the sheer power. This was also the first car I’ve ever bought, so I had big plans for the beast! I drove it around for the next couple of months (on temp rego), till I decided to start work on it. After careful inspection of the car and talking to a couple of people, I have decided to take the car back to bare metal, and build it up from there. Two reasons for that, one is that I wanted to paint it another colour, and two is that I wanted to see what I was up against. The car has one major rust spot on the rear left door skirting and I believe that that is the cause of the bad rusting under the rear left seat as well. The car also has some pretty bad bog filling, where one of the previous owners have tried to fix the rust, however did it very poorly. Other than normal small rust spots here and there around the car, it seems to be pretty clean and straight. After taking the car back to bare metal, I’m hoping to sand out all the superficial rust, and then hoping to go with a dark midnight blue, with black rims and black flares. Once the body is done I will then move to the suspension where I’m going to go with a coil over system, and replace all the bushels. After that I’m going to put in the original engine, with a triple Webber system, as well as a manual conversion. All the above should keep me busy for the next couple of months, so I haven’t really considered the interior or anything else yet. Quote
vramjee91 Posted March 16, 2012 Author Posted March 16, 2012 And I welcome any thoughts and feedback! Im only a noob and it would be good to hear from all the pros on this site! Quote
Scoota G Posted March 16, 2012 Posted March 16, 2012 Hey don't worry about it being a 2+2, it gives all the office workers something to read about. Any other plans for the engine? Does it have electronic ignition? Quote
vramjee91 Posted March 16, 2012 Author Posted March 16, 2012 Hey Scoota, Pretty sure its not. However I may be wrong. Not totally confident with the nitty gritty engine knowledge. Wanting to change that But do you think its worth converting ?? Do tell me more ! Quote
Roberto Posted March 16, 2012 Posted March 16, 2012 Good luck with your build. She looks nice and clean Quote
vramjee91 Posted March 16, 2012 Author Posted March 16, 2012 Cheers Roberto! I must say tho that it feels weird, cause ive stalked your build so many times, and have all your pictures saved onto my phone! Cheers, unfortunatly its not quite, ive found heaps of stuff once ive started peeling off the paint... Amazing what a little bog and paint can hide! P.s HUGE FAN of your car! inspiration to my build!! love the colors and everything! Quote
saxon Posted March 16, 2012 Posted March 16, 2012 Welcome! Love your passion. I been stalking Roberto a bit too lately. That engine bay is looking so good, wish I could get mine like that. Quote

Hands down the best, cheapest mod for the L Series is the Electronic Ignition conversion. Quote
jamo240 Posted March 16, 2012 Posted March 16, 2012 Good to see a young bloke getting in way over his depth...But that's where we all started, so good on you! ENjoy the ride! Quote
Moderators Zedman240® Posted March 16, 2012 Moderators Posted March 16, 2012 Looks pretty clean in the pics.. Hope we can help you with the build... Quote
53-681 Posted March 16, 2012 Posted March 16, 2012 Welcome bruh. I bought a 2+2 for exactly the same reason you did, but still wish I had bought and invested in an original 2 seater instead... Hit my thread up and see what I've been through with my 2+2. I hardly did any of the stuff myself, but funded it all. You might like it. Quote
nizm0zed Posted March 16, 2012 Posted March 16, 2012 sweet. Looks good in that colour in your avatar, chuck up some more pics of it! Doesnt matter if its a 2 seater or a bus, so long as you love it (but 2 seaters are better ) Electronic ignition wont make more power, but it'll make it start and run easier, as well as smoother running at lower RPMS. Definitely a worthwhile mod, even if its later on down the track (look in the classifieds, im selling a electronic dizzy, or make a WTB thread, someone will have one) Quote
EMPRACING Posted March 17, 2012 Posted March 17, 2012 mmm blue with black wheels me rikey and hey that office worker comment was a bit ruff haha I had efi when I got my elec dizzy but I dident miss settin points 1 bit! Quote
vramjee91 Posted March 29, 2012 Author Posted March 29, 2012 Hey Guys! Cheers for all the feedback. More pics will be up, just havn't been able to do so cause my computer crashed! But so far I have started stripping the car down to bare metal, and have gutted the inside. I have found some nasty surprises, but nothing too serious (Hopefully). Next step for me will be getting all the rust fixed up, and then priming and painiting. Also scooter cheers for the offer to help with the rust! once the pictures are up hopefully you can give me a better idea of what needs to be done. Quote
peter t Posted March 29, 2012 Posted March 29, 2012 Good on you mate. Nothing wrong with a bus. Mine is great. Quote
