Hi everyone, need some advice. I'm broke (arn't we all?) and rego is overdue. I'm considering going overseas soon and don't want to fork out $400+ (goes up every year) for registration. I only drive the car on weekends if that and to places of repair anyway.

So here I am thinking of getting CH plates. However after talking with Sulio (toecutter) there are some requirements such as a RW check. Now I know there are a few items which it would get picked up on. Mainly rear brakes don't adjust correctly.

I'm also aware that you need to belong to a club. So what does anyone in the know recommend?

CHS30Z? :) that would be cool.

You do realize Gav, that you can get a part refund on your Rego if you cancel it part way thru?

Give VicRoads a call & ask them.

RE CH plates, you need to be a member or a car club that supports the scheme.

And yes, you will most likely have to get a RWC to transfer to CH plates.

I will have CH plates for my z this week, you don't have to get a roadworthy :-). I rang Don Hill (NSDOC President) and they didn't want a roadworthy they prefered a check of the car personally.

I got that done saturday, he just checked all lights & horn, stood on the brakes and gave the car look over, didn't take it for a drive. Gave me a letter saying he has given the car his OK, get a vic roads rego form signed by Alan Fields (Sec), take both into Vic roads, pay your cash and you are done.

Relatively simple process just a matter of organising with the NSDOC guys. Mine was a bit of a rush / messy cause I need it before the Nationals & the show n shine i am going to this sunday and i had to find a morning to dive the 3 hrs to melb & back.

the amount they give you back is a joke, they will tell you that you will get the % amount back for the remaining months you have left, but its only on the registration part, not the TAC and whatever else you are charged for. i looked into it on a car my gf was selling, 3 months left, she was going to get $28 lol, so 6 months is a whole $60?

Are you sure Evan? I just got a rego refund on my brothers old subaru which died. They gave me $387 - part of that was the rego fee and all those little thigns they charge for. From memory only about $250 was the acutal registration. I was being overly nice and curtious to the guy at vicroads coz i didn't have the plates to return as they were sold with the car and then the car was destroyed. That may have helped.

The current rules on CH plates (in Vic) are that they are only supposed to be used to go, to and from sanctioned club events and to and from a place of repair.

If you are pulled over using the car outside of these guidelines you can be fined. I suppose more importantly, if you have an accident and you are not meeting these requirements you are theoretically driving an unregistered car and as well as being fined you might not be covered by insurance.

Because of rorting of the system, there is talk of going to a national system whereby you can use the car 90 days a year (which works out to be most weekends) but you must keep a log book. I think this is currently how the system works in SA.

I have heard about that to, can confirm that the present system in SA.

I want that in, you are suposed to fill in the log book before you leave home each trip. But 90 days a year is more than enough if you are like me and only drive the z on weekeds thats a spin Sat & Sun on 45 w/ends a year, if only i could find the time to drive the z that much.

They do limit your driving to club sancitioned events, but it can be any club event as long as the club is a CH affiliate. Eg i am off to a show'n' shine in Maryborough on w/end thats run by the local hot rod club.

There is also a 'test and tune :-) day on a dedicated day once a month'

The new CH proposal is 90 days, The weekend Sat/Sun is 2 days and a rally/event starting on a Friday finishing Sun would be counted as 3 Days.

There are a lot of pro's & cons for the change, if one looks at it as one use for one event (as it is now) then the only restriction is private use, although you can obtain permission in the form of a permit from your club CH officier for other use excluding commercial hire such as wedding etc.

I guess the Nats would be 5 days and in the new proposed system would you would use 5 maybe 6 to 7 days, rather than 1.

Of course, you could buy another 3 zeds and use 1 ever day!

A road worthy isn't required and the car is generally check, just to be compliant with the rules of the club ie. it is the age that you say it is!

I'd prefer the 90 day option. If I got to drive my Z half that in a year I would be happy and if I was driving the car for more than 90 days a year I could easily justify having full reg. CH plates definatley the way to go for me...jeez that reminds me better get my NDSOC membership renewed! :D
