Want a Zed but no enclosed garage

Hey guys/gals just after some advice

 

Before I even go into other issues regarding a 260Z I just realized it might not be for me simply due to living in an apartment with an open carport ie not enclosed.

 

Which rules out a project car meaning I'll end up spending a bit of money finding an already decent car but my worry is I won't be able to keep it that way having it live outside...

 

Perhaps a weather proof car cover would work? I live in a good suburb and don't have any issues with vandals TBH just worried I'll end up ruining this car.

 

I've fallen in love with the 260Z, right now ideally I've love it in silver with wide fenders/wheels black rims and some other random addon goodies to the exterior something like a ZG perhaps. My budget would p obably be $20k cash not interested in getting a loan for a car so with my current savings I'll be in a position to start looking at cars late Jan 2012 which gives me plenty of time to do my research and see what I could be getting myself into... 

 

Anyway, any advice would be nice! Thank you

Not many 240/260's in WA, Had to get mine from VIC. Join the http://wazregister.com/ if you haven't already, they sometimes have cars for sale and local too.

You might also want to checkout some Insurance companies as I know with Shannon's they don't accept open carports.

 

Will this be a Daily for you?

Yes insurance is another issue but I won't have much choice apart from paying up $$ or moving which I don't really want to anytime soon.

 

I live in the CBD of perth and the car will probably be only driven on weekends and perhaps friday.

shannons told me as soon as my car can move under its own power it's no longer insured due to it being parked in an open car port - their solution was to put it into a storage facility...if it's your only car, i'm not sure how you're meant to get to this storage facility. I'd try to find someone nearby who has a carpark attached to their appartment they dont use, or simply try to rent one in a nearby multi story parking lot if shannons are happy with this.

You could also try Ryno insurance, they seem to be a good alternative to Shannons. Or try a specialist insurance broker who may be able to get you a good deal.

If you are really serious I would try Shannons again.

I insured my car with Shannons when I originally bought it. I had no problems even though it was kept in an open car port in Darwin. I then moved back to Townsville where I was lucky enough to have a lock up garage to keep it in. I have now moved to Bonegilla where it is once again in an open car port. I have informed Shannons of the garaging circumstances at each location and it says on my current policy documents "vehicle usually kept in  in a car port at Bonegilla Victoria" or something similar. Shannons have never raised any concerns about a car port to me. The policy even costs less now than in a lockable garage in Townsville.

Try Shannon's again - I live in Perth and have my 260Z under a semi enclosed car port with very secure gates (plus 2 dogs!) and not a problem. I too, like Ray got my 260 from Victoria. Good luck.

I had my car under the airport for 5 years. Not the end of the world. I don't bother with shannons, think they are a bunch of . . . . . (well I can't say it on this forum). Plenty of other good insurers.

On this topic though how about good car covers? I've not had good experiences with a car cover before but I've only had cheapies.

 

If you get a good car cover will it protect the paintwork / body? I mean it's not a garage obviously but I'd be worried say about the paint getting ruined due to trapped moisture under the cover etc...

you could look on gumtree, people are always renting out garage spaces etc. there is also a mint silver 260z on ebay in your price range at the moment, although i think its a bit over priced compared to eastern states zeds.

 

not related to insurance, but my zed lived on my driveway for a few weeks. some kids walked past one day

kid 1: wow, whats that? looks like a ferrari!

kid 2: nah its a mustang!

so there you go, it makes people happy

Well if you don't want to move & get a garage then perhaps the best option is to sort out the insurance issue with respect to acceptable security/immobilisation of the car; even if you stick it on blocks & take the wheels off & drive it only for special occasions?

But irrespective of that I'd seriously look at hanging some weather proof screening on the sunny & bad-weather side(s) of the carport though, as Zeds & most cars of the era are prone to rust & so you'd do yourself & it a big favour by providing as much sun & rain protection as possible -  the more the better especially if you expect long-term ownership. If you don't do that I think you will eventually regret it down the track.  And screening might help to hide the car from dodgy types too who might otherwise decide to harm it.
