Hi all, I'm a proud new owner of a 240Z  . I bought it undercoated and need to find out what it's original colour was. Can anybody help me work this out by reading the chassis number????

No - the chassis number will not help with the original colour - Nissan/Datsun did not sort the colour/interior/manual/auto/diff ratio on a single id plate like they started to do with the 280zx :(

The only thing that might be worth a look is behind the dash etc some people when repainting a car don't go to great lengths to hide the original colour ie removal of the dash to paint behind there etc. Remove the glove box and take a look :). I assume if in undercoat then the engine bay is also as this is where the original colour option sticker is usually kept - however after some 30 years most did not last - so that will be no help either.

If you are looking to return to original condition I would think it shouldn't harm the cars value to paint the car any original colour for that year. As long as the interior colour and exterior match that of say 1972's available colours it should be fine.

What do others think?

I agree - other than contacting Nissan in Japan to find out - they might have records of how it left the factory however don't count on it if the car is an early one. Reason I say this is that when I contacted Nissan in Japan when I owned HS30-00016 they had no records of the early zeds - I believe this was due to a dispute (spelling?) between management and employees over wages so most records were destroyed by management to hide the numbers of car build = swing thing in their court.

Might also be that manufacturers are only obligated to support a model for 10 years and with the countless model platforms released between now and back then, along with the data storage system of the 70's not being quite what it is today, they just dont exist anymore if they ever did. ;)

I agree however that you probably can find the orignal colour in hard to reach places as suggested. Underneath any residual bituman matting on the floor pan etc.

Good luck

Just don't repaint it that aweful baby poo brown or some of those tacky metalics that they came out in.

Silver would be my first choice, very classy and very popular. Or maybe White, also works well on that era car

that baby poo brown is one of the best original colours IMO, when paint is fresh it looks clean, when it ages it grows on ya.

silveris a good choice, but sure it wasnt available on the early builds.

there is a link somewhere to what colours were avail for what year (in another thread here).

does your car not have interior? or some at least that is unmolested?

should be a good sign of where to start.

if you want to build a cincouser car then it onoy matters that the colour is right for that model/year etc, so take your pick, white, poo, blue orange etc. look into it more on hybridz or zhome.com, beware as US models had some discrepancies vs our aus/euro delivered models.

If this helps, my 240z is car#000268.

I have owned this car for nearly 20years. :)

The car is silver. Although it has been resprayed at some time before I purchased it, the engine bay and inside the car have never been touched and remain in the original factory silver.
