oldmates260z Posted February 5, 2007 Posted February 5, 2007 I have been told that the Series 2 had a steer rack similar to the 260Z. I have seen the Series 1 and cannot see Nissan changing it back. Can anyone confirm that? Thanks Quote
RUSSJZ-ZED Posted February 5, 2007 Posted February 5, 2007 I think you will find that the 280ZX's rack sits behind the front crossmember, does not matter how good the fit is, if you set one up in a 240/260Z you will be in for a big surprise, when you turn the steering wheel to the left, your wheels will go right.Same problem will occur with any rack that mounts on the rear of the crossmember. What is a" push" by the steering arm on one side of the crossmember, becomes a"pull" on the opposite side.-Gearing is reversed. To make it work ,you will have to reverse the crossmember(Is there enough room with an "l" series? or get used to "left is right" Quote
tattoo_ink Posted February 6, 2007 Posted February 6, 2007 i went to a local nissan wreckers hunting around for a rack that mite fit a few months ago and found a 280zx(not sure what series), looked under the bonnet, and i couldnt believe it but it had a power steering box no rack ! does anybody know anything about this as i couldnt believe my eyes ? is that factory or did someone have a crazy conversion done on this car ? it did look std though ! chris Quote
nat0_240_chevZ Posted February 6, 2007 Posted February 6, 2007 not crazy, theres a powersteering rack on ebay atm. Quote
tattoo_ink Posted February 6, 2007 Posted February 6, 2007 yeh but it wasnt a rack, it was a steering box that was in that 280zx ! my manual says only racks in all the zeds??? Quote
oldmates260z Posted February 6, 2007 Author Posted February 6, 2007 Had a Series 1 280ZX and it had a steering box, like you get on a Datsun 1600. I assume that is what you saw. So if the Series 2 went back to rack and pinion it seems like a big mod for Nissan to do. Maybe if you get a LHD rack from the States it will overcome the back the front problem. All too dam hard! Mr Camouflage Posted February 7, 2007 Posted February 7, 2007 Well, we need a few members with 280ZX's to pop the bonnet and tell us what they have. Quote
road rider Posted April 15, 2008 Posted April 15, 2008 Bump.... Just noticed this. Sorry my reply is a bit late. But the answer to the million dollar question is infact yes. Nissan went to rack and pinion steering for the series two, 280zx. I really don't know why they went for the drag link set up in the first place on the series one. Complete waste of time putting boat anchor steering on a sports car (ok some of you wouldn't call a 280zx a sports car ) For the record I own two zeds and luv them both (series one 240Z/series two 280zx) Well one maybe luved a little more than the other Quote
