Hi guys, my first post so be gentle  :D

I seem to see a lot of US 240/260's with the turbo Buick engine, which i believe is the L67 3.8L V6.

But i haven't seen any aussie Z's with that setup, is it illegal over here to put that drivetrain in them?

Correct me if Im wrong,

But thats the Commodore motor, and if so Australia is the last GM local thats using it now in production cars.

I havnt heard of anyone doing it here yet but it's totally doable.

P.S. Welcome

John

POST Script, yep correct, see following link

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Buick_V6_engine

Production of the 3800 V6 engine officially ended on Friday, August 22, 2008 when plant 36 was closed. There was a closing ceremony and speakers who extolled the virtues of the engine. Originally GM had set this date for January 1, 1999; however, due to the vast number of complaints from both investors and customers because of the popularity and reliability of the engine, the date was extended. At the end of production, the LZ4 3500 OHV V6 replaced the naturally aspirated 3800 applications, and the LY7 3600 DOHC V6 replaced the supercharged 3800 applications

Found this surfing, be interesting seeing one done with a 200+ kW Com motor.

Yeah John you're right, they were in the larger Commodores in aus, mainly monaros and HSV's.

i know a guy selling a full motor (supercharger/loom etc) + trans for $2k out of his VT HSV, another poster commented on bang for buck (sorry cant remember the name), and as im new to the Z car scene, any chance you could point me in the right direction, motor wise?

In QLD you would have a lot of trouble registering a 3.8L Turbo V6... From my limited knowledge an RB26DETT conversion is pushing it for legal upgrades.

Posted

I know one of these conversion was done here in NZ a few years back as the car ended up wrecked and a local club member picked up the wreckage and striped it for parts with one of his mates taking the engine out for another hot-rod project (not a zed)

Posted

There was a 2+2 up here full of rust a while back with a V6 and 5 speed.

Apparently went like the clappers in NA form.

Ummmmmmmmmmmmm Oppppppppppppppps

Just remembered someting.

Drrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr, Unless its NA (injected) based on what I'm going through with the AMG charged 3.2L, you wont be able to fit a 3.8L turbo or supercharged motor.

Under the classification (In VIC anyhow, which apparently will become a National standard) the max you can go on a forced induction motor in a Zed is just under 3.3L, otherwise a NA Holden V6 will make it easily.

There is a guide to the calc's in my build thread around page 20 from memory.

Cheers

Interesting some years ago I was looking at a 215cuin V8 alloy for a conversion/upgrade (approx 3.5 L). It was not for a zed.

It is one of the most successful engines ever built (as in units made and car models that used it).

Light weight and can punch the HP. Originally Buick made but Rover got rights to manufacture midway to late through its life.

Unfortunately it was used in some 'ugly' cars, but a nice engine. See link.

You can stop cringing now  :D

Thanks Scottz, that's a really interesting read.

It highlights to me the 'disposable' attitude of the US at the time.

If Im correct this would have been the same motor used in the Triumph Stag's ?

If so, they had a wonderful raspy note to them, but the SU set up was useless.

Posted

Stag was a much smaller V8, 2.5 I think? 3.0 at most

Spot on Ben

It was a 3.0L V8, just did some surfing and read that it was developed in house using a Leyland L4 that they combined to produce the motor, original capacity was to be 2.5L with Bosch fuel injection but they had drama's getting it to work so they increased the bore and got it to 3.0L and ended up using Strombergs instead.

All this is starting to get off topic above small alloy V8 etc but for the record - the Stag engine was a Triumph engine and not related to the Buick based Rover. This Triumph engine is a bit of a dog which is why even Triumph used the Rover V8 in their TR8's as the Stag V8 was just that bad.

The Daimler V8 was 2.5L and was a good little engine - popular in open wheel racing too before the F5000 stated to take over as the open wheeler V8's ;)

I have seen a few 3.5 All Alloy Rover V8's insatlled in zed here in NZ over the years.

Now I know this thread is about the L67 V6 - but what about a Nissan 350/Maxima or 370z engine between the struts :) in NA form this should fit within the new VIC repower rules?

Agreed, VQ35/37 makes a lot more sense, compact and lightweight and far more advanced design. Did I mention I have a Z33 6-speed box for sale? ahem...

True about all your comments regarding the Nissan VQ35/37, but I think what he was originally eluding to was that a mate of his had a SC V6 and from an economical point of view this was attractive to him.
