53-681 Posted January 7, 2011 Posted January 7, 2011 Hello Everyone, This morning, the tow truck delivered my 260Z 2+2. I must admit, as it was being dropped off I felt a massive heart ache... The car is in terrible condition: -There isn't even a key for the car (Is it a stolen vehicle???) -All the seats are all over the place -The front right fender is damaged and rusted (not in pic) -All the side arms and door handles are extremely banged up -The dash contains heaps of wear (not just a crack) -The front right headlight cable is torn out -Major rust under the car -The seals around the sunroof are coming off (hanging down) -The interior of the car contains a very foul stench -The bottom cover of the steering wheel is missing (Is it even original steering wheel?) -No key, no ignition; Can't start the car to even test the engine. Now the rust just under the right hand side door is quite bad and a little deep. What advice can you blessed Z owners/restorers offer me... I need all the help I can get! I am in shambles - Far worse than the kid who received clothes in an xbox 360 box for Christmas. Quote
Bigfella Posted January 7, 2011 Posted January 7, 2011 Sound just like when mine was delivered. I wasn't there but my wife told me the towie thought I was an idiot. He couldn't believe anyone would pay money for it. I had the same feeling whenI got home. I alway had in mind that I was going to do a full bare metal restore. So I just pulled it into the garage and started stripping. I have a couple of years to go. But man I'm having fun. Everyone here is very supportive and a great wealth of knowledge. Just work out what you want to end up with and start chipping away. Have a look at my build journal and you will see what I mean, Mine is a mess.. Good Luck Matt Quote
chris240 Posted January 7, 2011 Posted January 7, 2011 ooohh dear oh dear.....welcome. my advice is to start with johnnie walker, black label is advisable.. Quote
Gordo Posted January 7, 2011 Posted January 7, 2011 Mate, you have some work to do. You need a plan . 1 year or it could take 4. You need a budget because if you do it bit buy bit it could cost 20k or 30k. in that case just buy one that is a goer. And one other thing buy the sounds of it you will need another Donner car for parts, it will be much cheaper than trying to pick up bits and pieces along the way. Good luck. PS and a big shed. Quote
peter mc Posted January 7, 2011 Posted January 7, 2011 it all about the challenge .and a pasion for the z, it a grate ride enjoy the challenge Quote
brianz Posted February 8, 2011 Posted February 8, 2011 Hi The best advice I can give you is ENJOY. I am on my 4th Z (3 x 2+2s and a 2 seater- I wish I still had that one). I bought mine in March 2010 after it had been parked for 7 years. Fortunately it was under cover and was originally kicked over on a fairly regular basis. I was thinking of a 3 month turn-around to get it on the road with a fuller restoration a few years down the track. The more I got into it the more I wanted to do to it - a great opportunity to learn. It has gone from a sedate Burgundy colour with beige trim to Electric Blue and black interior trim with lots of chrome. There are still a few months to go. I have to say I bought the car on this Forum and have bought many of the bits I have needed on here as well. Friendly advice has also been very helpful along the way. Hang in there and enjoy the ride - it will be worth it. Quote
