Cheers Gareth. Did you have a working clock or did you get it repaired? Its just that if I can use a repairer in Aus I will...

It's been a while since I posted so took a few shots recently. Decided to get the interior sorted a little more, I knew there'd probably be a bit of dirt and a few wiring nightmares behind the dash. There is also a half dozen other reasons to get in behind the dash and with the sometimes bad stories I've heard about dash removal stuck in my head, we started!

Nothing too scary about a dashboard removal...as long as you don't find any snakes behind there, you should be fine. The loom you have to unplug on the drivers side don't bother labeling; each plug can only go back in to it's matching connector. Just be sure to remove the heater control panel first. The hardest part is undoing all those damn cable linkages!

You are right, even if its a bit harder to put back in, two people can do it easy. Threads on the net talked about colouring / labelling but why bother when plugs only fit one socket! Good advice D.

So this interior caper is turning out a little longer than expected, but I got the trim along the front pillar, doors and windscreen redone as the old trim was torn in places - but you have to take the windscreen out don't you... Also fitted the quarter window trim and plastic bar with interior light. Hopefully the dash will be back in this week, then a dicey drive off to the auto electrician with no screen and milk crate for a seat hah.

Z good job, your car is coming together nicely. I found that putting the interior together was very time consuming. Also like all the small personal touches you are adding like clock and speedo. Zeds were good 40 years ago but can always do with some modern improvements.

Cheers Specialp3, those pics of your Z on a recent thread look really good, clean car!

Just got the seats back, took a while but they are vinyl leather with new vents and look ten times better than the originals!

Haha cheers Salty.

After sitting for six weeks at the auto electrician's I can say the car interior is getting back together, although it's slow going! I picked the her up yesterday and drove it back to it's new home in Oxenford, there's a nice layer of dust over it from sitting around the workshop that even the 45min drive down the highway won't fix, but it was good to go for a drive.

The dash is back in with the JDM speedo, Cali clock and uprated bulbs. The alarm is now installed as well as the park light upgrade harness sold by MSA and a 5 point fuse block for any other electricals needed in the future. I had an extra earth wired in next to the rear lights as another member said it improved the electrics a little, thought it was a good idea.

The rest of the interior is nearly done (though if you had a look inside it still looks stripped), new rear quarter, three piece rear window / interior light, dog leg strips etc... the only thing I'm waiting on is the carpet for the sills and trying to find some kind of nice hooks for the seat belts. The glove box badge and slits for the choke and carb control have been plastic chromed, so at some point soon I'll spray them black and wipe the high points off for a nice new chrome look. Gotta find some way of cleaning up the glovebox area and installing the radio too.

The list goes on... but at least the car is back and one step closer to complete lol.

Cheers

Sounds like a heap of work, was the plastic chroming expensive? Also can you explain the electrical work a bit more, the park light upgrade and the extra earth wire in the rear harness? Thanks, Gareth.

My whole aim is to take as much stress away from the old electrical system as possible, the fuse block is so I can draw from one dedicated block for accessories (although I'll still need a set of relays for the engine bay) and not mess with the original harness too much. To this end on top of the proper H4 relay for the lights (from MSA too), the other harness is meant to help with park lights, which I know we don't have, but the other benefits seem worth a go:

With the extra earth, a member said a while back that the earth made his lights work better but when I had the car in the electrician shop recently, they confirmed that an extra earth would not be bad as modern cars have earths in many places apparently. Sorry for not being more specific but it's all I know, I'm hoping it'll make the indicator lights light quicker, unlike older cars which can take ages.

The plastic chroming seems reasonable with the crowd I have been using on a few different jobs now - A Class Metal Finishers in S.A. They charged me $50 a piece to prep and chrome, ask for Greg he's a good guy.

Hope my rambling helps!

No posts since May...Slacka!

You know when you have a big Zed day? I think this was one of them.

Have not posted much as working on two areas of the car, the interior, no suprises there, and seeing as the center console is out I may as well replace the gearbox! Truth be told the original box was like a cement mixer so in it's place is a fully reconditioned S14 turbo box with wider 1st and 2nd and double synchro's, should be plenty nicer. I have made gains with the interior, just need a few parts for the dashboard and that should be done. Also picked up a rare Tomei shifter, won't make the changes any smoother though haha.

Stuart Wilkins can modify the vertical gearbox mount for the 71. Pretty good service too, send him your mount, he'll modify it and send it back the same day he gets it. I'll do that when we are ready to have the car not moving for a while, hang-on, my car is permanently like that!

Ya coulda told me three months ago Waxie!

Well there has not been much happening with the engine Garvice, the F54 was sent off to be checked and then possibly honed, but a few other things have happened. Bought the fuel set-up from (PZG302), big thanks Matt, no fleabay surge tank here, nice and solid, with a low pressure pump feeding to a Bosch 044.

Picked up some 300zx Turbo CV axles, not sure if I will end up using them, depending which diff I go with, but they are there if need be.

Picked up most of an Air Con set-up from Dimitri (Zedman240). Will try and fit the under dash part now and finish the rest off later.

And also got a little bling! I've seen a nice gas lid knob on a few JDM and American Z's (re-chromed the wipers too), thought it was a nice touch.

So yeah, a bit happening, plenty of bits in the garage, just not on the car!
