Hi Guys,

Over the next 4-6 weeks or so, I hope to be changing out the engine on my 2+2.

It currently has a very clean, standard L26, with twin carbs.  Runs perfectly.  I was told the engine had at some point been rebuilt - although I cannot verify it.  Compression test came up trumps when I had the car looked at though and as I said - was very clean car, been in a family for 20yrs, with obvious money spent on other components (gearbox rebuilt etc) -  so have no reason to doubt the authenticity of the comment.

I will be upgrading to an L28 fuel injected engine to cater for my future turbo plans, but there is absolutely nothing wrong with this L26 motor.  I sometimes wonder why the hell I am changing it, but I've got the bug to modify for some reason (too many pics on this site of tough looking Z's encouraging me...).

Anyway...

It's still in the car now, but when it comes out - will need a new home.

Can still obviously be heard running and all that if anyone wants to check it out.

Not sure what a decent L26 goes for, probably not much - but happy for peeps to PM their interest.

I am in northcote if any one wants a look at engine.  Will be removed in Laverton though - so collection would need to happen there.

Cheers.

Just realised I have no idea what an excellent condition L26 is worth!

Would appreciate if some of the forum members could point me in the right direction here?

Has round top carbs BTW.  All appears to be in perfect working order.

Do not expect top dollar - just a "fair/honest" price that would make both parties happy.

Can send pics if required - were to big to post up on forum though.

Cheers.

I have seen them go for $200 in Melbourne, and that was un-tested.

L28e seems to go for $500 or so.

Possible Between $250 to $500, depending on km and condition etc.

Why not get the EFI and turbo gear onto the L26 ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? Heaps simpler! Plus no need to worry about changing the engine number!

I bought a very good L24 for $150 from a forum member, so I'd say $200+ ? Depends also how many things you leave on it for example thermostat housing, engine mounts etc..

Simple tip to shrink your pictures.

Open them in paint. Go to edit -> Select All. Then use the resize option to like 30% of original size (vary this to get smaller or larger sizes). Then go File -> Save As and then make sure it is saving as a .jpeg file type.

hmm this is tempting if u were in SA no problems. but i got to pay for shipping more than for the engine. post pics maybe throw me over the edge.

For pics also set u digital camera on smaller MP. for interenet 1MP is big enough even less. but do what Stevo said.  open pic in paint-> Image->Strech/Scew or (CTRL W) if 2mp pic i use around 30-50% both on vertical and horizontal (under strech tab) than save as Jpg and files should be around 100-200kb each.

so tempting.

what does a L26 with manifold carbs etc.. weigh??

may get some transport cost to see if its viable for me.

Mate - I have no idea what the weight is!  Maybe 500kgs?

I have recently made a booking for an engine collection with a company called e-go (google them).  They charged me about $130.00 for a crate from QLD to melbourne.  Seems way too cheap - I know. The booking has been accepted for later this week - so has not happened yet.  Will let forum members know how it goes though.

If all ok at that price - bargain freight company for sure.  FYI - they did not ask for pallet dimensions, weights or anything in the online booking.  Just asked if it was a pallet and how many of them were there.  Also asked if forklift was available at pickup/delivery location (otherwise drop tail truck required and they cost more).

Anyway - try them for a quote.

Also - engine will NOT come with alternator (nor the AC pump).  Should have everything else important though.

I have used e-go 3 times now for delivering really big stuff and cannot believe how cheap they are.  It is all done online which keeps the costs down.  I have had no problems with them.  ;)

There is also the option of depot to depot, which is 50% off too.

Well - that confirms it.

e-go definitely worth looking at guys.

Had not thought about selling interstate, however could try to get this thing onto a pallet.  Would rather local collection to be honest, but if someone made it worthwhile - could look at other options.

Have you put a price on it yet?  I might be going blind ...  can't afford a welding mask yet ... but I can't see a price mentioned as yet.

Weight wise engine and carbies may be around 200-210 kgs? Depends if you are leaving exhaust manifold, flywheel etc..

yeah Dimitri you are closer to the mark. ive just sent my RB with gearbox and quite a few extra bits and it was 350kg with the pallet.

may look into this transport company. though wasnt planning finding a motor so soon. small issue of space at my end. need to clean up the wrecked Z and few other bits. plus my trailer is fully loaded with the new running gear.

Sorry - definitely had not posted a price.  Got side tracked.

Been various comments re. the going rate of a good L26.  Was thinking $550.00.

Some may consider that on the high side - but:

Comes with twin round top carbs, Sports RAM flow air cleaners (with new foam), starter motor, clutch, disti - everything except the alternator.

This engine can be heard running and I am happy for anyone to run tests on it. It has not been lying in the back of a workshop for 10 years or sitting in some sh*t heap seizing up.  It's clean, starts easy, does not blow smoke and compression is very good.

Test results were as follows:

Cylinder/Compression

1 / 115

2 / 125

3 / 110

4 / 125

5 / 120

6 / 115

Clutch is also excellent.

As per previous posts - hope to have this out in the next 4 weeks or so.  Freight? Been thinking about it and would rather PICKUP.  Securing this to a normal pallet could be a bit of a mission methinks.  If there is no other interest except for interstate - will look into it.  Local buyer will get preference though ok.

Cheers.

Here's a thought,

the L28 shan is shortly about to recieve, is coming inside a very nice sturdy snug fitting crate, and I put two decent bits of timber in the base for the sump surround to sit upon, (so the sump pan  wont get bashed in and oil pick up all bented!), when Shan pulls the L28 out, vertically, he can drop the L26 into it, ready to send to someone else.

It can be a MAGICAL mystery tour crate that can be tracked on it's world wide journey, each time someone sells/buys/swaps/exchanges and engine, or large items. A special Auszcar forum crate.

A sort of communal crate, a bit like the garden gnome that was stolen and travelled all over the worl, with pics taken and sent back to the gnomes owners by the varoious gnome gnickers.

first pics coming soon.

HAHA!!

Beautiful to watch Jas.

That's actually a fair point.  Will have a engine crate that I could re-use for delivery.

Cool.  Opens it up a little for interstate purchases.

If anyone is interested.  Make an offer.

Cheers.

Haha what have you been smoking! I like the idea though but what happens when the crate ends up in Perth and no one has anything to ship back to the east coast?

I know of a place in Moorabbin (in Melbourne) that give away engine sized crates.. so if you need one here I can help.

Just giving a little bump.

This will definitely be coming out in the next 3 weeks or so.  Would prefer that people can hear running and be confident with what they are getting.

Can arrange to have it packed for interstate freight.  PM if interested.

Cheers.

I've bought this off Shan ...  this will sit nicely in my 260Z in the place of my seized motor.

Now if I could only get around to doing the REST of the stuff my car needs doing on it....
