foodie Posted May 31, 2010 Posted May 31, 2010 Hey everyone, I am new to the forum (posting that is). I have a 74' 260z in my garage, not running. Rb20det conversion, hilux calipers etc. I have driven it maybe twice since owning it (2007 I bought it, sad i know). Last time I drove it, I pulled back into the driveway and could smell something burnt, ran for the fire extinguisher and ever since it has gotten worse, spark, no spark, fuel pump, no fuel pump, now no lights. I need a mobile electrician to come and take my $ to fix it before I burn it. I pulled the dash out and I can't see any dodgy wiring so far but there are lots of joins. Before it died Idle and rev (pedal stuck on carpet, didnt meant to rev it like that) http://www.youtube.com/user/foodieeee#p/u/29/z_w3hfpG5P0 Some pics http://www.brisbanecoastthundercats.com.au/gallery/main.php?g2_itemId=9245 Any takers on $ for electrical fixing? Happy to pay p/h for someone who knows. I live south side Brisbane. Quote

Welcome anyway. hope you can sort it out. Deserve it?? He bought it, its his car, he can make a garden fountain out of it if he wants to. Foodie, I don't have a recommendation for a mobile sparky. But a problem that affects that much of the electrics can't be too difficult to track down, be it you with a multimeter or a mobile sparky. Give it a crack. They are a great car to drive. Quote

Moderators Zedman240® Posted May 31, 2010 Moderators Posted May 31, 2010 Welcome... As for the shorts, and if the fuses are blown, just look at all the wiring and look for something that doesn't look right. There must be wiring that's rubbing on the chassis metal to be causing that. Auto electrics aren't really that hard..just need patience and a test light! Quote
Quandary Posted May 31, 2010 Posted May 31, 2010 This is like deja vu for me. Did you check the ignition wiring under the steering wheel shroud? I found singed wires but I don't think I would have noticed without the tape that was binding the wires. It was the singed plastic and tape that made the burning smell (and smoke) and then later the headlights died. I actually don't think any burning wiring beyond the dash would be noticeable by a smell, unless it's oil related. Oil leaks can cause a burning smell, particularly nearby the battery. Quote
foodie Posted May 31, 2010 Author Posted May 31, 2010 i bought the car, telling the wife I was selling my boat (i raced thundercats for 7 years)...but I didnt sell the boats (notice the plural). No fuses blown, no thermal fuses blown. I thought I should chase down every connection cut into wires over the last 30 yrs but I got the shits after pulling the dash out hehe So the boats are now gone! Keen to get this thing running while its winter so I don't need to fork out for some aircond. btw, does the 'captcha' letter disapear after so many posts?? Quote

lightmaster240z Posted May 31, 2010 Posted May 31, 2010 Are welcome and good luck with the auto elec Quote
sco_aus Posted May 31, 2010 Posted May 31, 2010 Ease up Chris, you must think the same thing about me then... Welcome mate, electrics are the biggest pain in the arse. You might need to let it smoke for a minute to narrow it down? Quote
mtopxsecret6 Posted June 1, 2010 Posted June 1, 2010 The first video sounds like there is no oil pressure at all, lots of rocker metal to metal tapping and barely running. How have they wired the ecu in? i would start there, the compatability from the original to the aftermarket ignition system could be the issue. If you cant work it out, you can donate the car to me... lol Quote
Mr240z Posted June 1, 2010 Posted June 1, 2010 Damn straight. Welcome and good luck! Haven't you changed your tune.....You'd be the first to jump down his throat. Quote
