MaygZ Posted May 31, 2010 Posted May 31, 2010 Engine number re-stamping isnt a hard task, just get a tool maker to make you the correct "L" character as it isnt standard. detection is usually x-ray of some sort, or blue dye soaked into the number. Ive seen an L20AET suddenly turn 350hp due to a weekend capacity increase to 3000cc and $10000 woth of mods. A criminal offence = gaol!! Are you serious Pauly?! - they can't register a car in another state unless they have residency in that state. That's not a loophole - that just stupid! How about you keep your bright idea's to yourself & keep quiet for a while. Had your nasty pills for breakfast eh Lurch?? Pauly is unfortunately right. It could be registered in an address in NSW and then transferred to Vic reg. One could rent a house or flat in Albury (for eg) for 3 months - still cheaper than an engineer. Quote
Administrators gav240z Posted May 31, 2010 Administrators Posted May 31, 2010 And the answer is......... Regulation 8 as Benji referred to earlier. We downloaded heaps of info on the comparison in power and how the 280z was also manufactured in 1977 in the USA. Even copied an ebay advert for a Haynes manual covering 240z,260z & 280z. So we got it registered this afternoon. Thanks to all you guys for your help. That sounds great, any chance you can upload that information here as it might save a few others the same hassle. Including myself who has an L28 in my Z, but I'm pretty sure the REGO sticker still quotes the original L24 number. Quote
theremm Posted July 24, 2017 Posted July 24, 2017 (edited) Just thought I'd add to this old thread as I have recently purchased an L28 and was trying to understand the legality (I'm in QLD) in regards to properly registering and insuring this swap for my 240z. Came across these FIA Homologation forms and extensions which note that in 1975 the L28 was approved and could be selected for H(L)S30 and R(L)S30 model cars as a maker's option. This is specifically for the fuel injected L28 however. See link or scroll down to page 46-48 of the attached pdf. http://historicdb.fia.com/car/nissan-datsun-sports-240-z-hls30 Edited July 24, 2017 by theremm gav240z 1 Quote

dat2kman Posted July 24, 2017 Posted July 24, 2017 Nissan manufactured around 90,000 280Z's These were a regular S30 body, with regular 260Z mechanicals, it had ugraded wiring to accomodate the fuel injection. Other than that, it was a 260Z There is plenty of sales brochures, spec sheets, test reports in magazines etc, detailing the 280Z, fitted with L28. It's your triple Webers that they may have concern with, stupid, because, in 1977-78 there were other cars, sold new, in Australia, with multi weber carbs, ie Ferrari, Lamborghini,. However, these were standard production fitment Quote

theremm Posted July 25, 2017 Posted July 25, 2017 It's your triple Webers that they may have concern with, stupid, because, in 1977-78 there were other cars, sold new, in Australia, with multi weber carbs, ie Ferrari, Lamborghini,. However, these were standard production fitment Yes that's correct, however fitting of performance accessories such as camshafts, carburettors etc must technically comply with the acceptable change in emissions as per the NCOP, however in QLD we don't have emissions testing facilities so this does not apply. I guess that is the way around that, and potentially the fuel injection issue... . in any case however, I'm sure there will be no problems to have the new L28 engine number noted on a RWC and then just pass that onto department of transport and main roads. I also rang the QLD modifications department yesterday and I was told that unless the L28 was offered as a manufacturers option for the S30 chassis in Australia (i.e 280Z) then technically it cannot be considered as a manufacter's option, regardless of what was offered in other export markets. However, as the L28E was a manufacturer approved option it does not require engineer's certification. Any evidence of any 280z's being sold/imported to Australia? Quote
