The design is on my web page (follow the first link) however we changed from that design slightly. Its a little bit overkill but I know the stands are going to hold up and I would prefer to be safe. Problem is the amount of steel used, this pushes the price up. I can't remember exactly but it was somewhere around $400-$500. And from what I remember it would have only cost an extra $100 to build 2 lots (due to the cost of buying steel per length or meter). Design: In progress: What we changed was the sliding bits that hold the jack and the car. They are now a 1 piece design to make it stronger and we also added a small lip around the edge of the platform to stop the jack from sliding off. We are also adding legs that slide in the base to stop the stands rolling around (or alternatively you can buy wheels with brakes) Quote

Similar ones are also available in OZ, but without the worm drive, but not sure who sells them.I used one on my Mercedes 190SL a few years ago and they take all the hard work out of working underneath. This one in Germany costs about EUR 650, or about A$1000. Quote

Kent Posted February 11, 2009 Posted February 11, 2009 sexual sushi. do you have any photo's of the completed rig? especially the design changes you made to increase strength? it is probably a stupid question (and i am guessing the answer is no due to weight), but would it be strong enough to hold the chassis while working on fabbing diff mounts etc. and possibly reassembling rear suspension etc. and is the rear bumper mounts strong enough to attach the rear points to (just got my Z, so not familiar with it's construction).. people seem to attach them a number of ways.. i would prefer not to have to drill into the body to make brackets etc. Quote

Kent Posted February 11, 2009 Posted February 11, 2009 yeah, i discussed that with a friend, advantage of this design is it gets over the problem of having to lift the front and rear at the same time to the right height to mount to the engine stand. and i only have 1 stand at the moment.. it may work out relatively better to make this up rather than buy a 2nd one Quote
xa1973 Posted February 13, 2009 Posted February 13, 2009 Your concept is good and simple I made a set similar to yours but using two hand boat wiches ( one each end ) for height adjustment attached to a slide with pulleys and a third one for rotation to minmize effort ( you can work on your own ) with adjustable RHS for the base joiner on solid swivel rubber wheels with brakes for moving ease, good for any size car you have Cheers Quote

Before anyone says any thing i know that the center of rotation is off but this was my first attempt i know what i have to do to fix it for next time All up this cost me about $250 in metal and about 5 hours to build check it out and see what you think Quote

PeterAllen Posted February 14, 2009 Posted February 14, 2009 Based on my own experience here are a few basic points: Two x engine stands = $50 each - eBay Steel for mounting brackets = $75 - steel supplier Extend the height of the stands by 300mm Bigger 4" castor wheels x 6 off = $45 - eBay Use existing mounting points on the shell (see photos) Make centre of rotation 75mm above the bumper bar mounting points. Paint red - critical for success! (edit) Forgot to add. To mount the shell all that is required are two mates and a carton of beer! Quote

Hello Mate Looks good, personally I would still run a length of RHS along the bottom to prevent flex as you dont have gussets at your joints, but whatever works Cheers Quote
sexual_sushi Posted February 26, 2009 Posted February 26, 2009 khughes: sorry i wasnt subscribed to this thread for some reason. i haven't quite got around to finishing them (moved to brisbane, but they are next on my dads to do list). Im heading home for the weekend so ill take some nice big pics of the final design. i think we were going to build the bracket to go through the taillight holes and attach on top of the rear struts (i think). I think the bumper mounts are alright assuming you have fixed all rust and aren't putting it up with too much weight on the car, like the suspension you mentioned. I personally wouldnt use the bumper mounts but we are being very cautious. We built our design overkill, we assumed it should handle being up with the rear suspension on but we haven't tested it yet. We were going to use the engine stands originally but for the cost of 2 engine stands we could build our own that's going to take alot more weight and utilise the jacking feature. On the engine stands we have, we noticed stress just holding the l28 (due to the length of the motor) Quote

I've worked on this car mounted on the rotisserie and it is a better, more substantial rotisserie than mine.
