LOL, All I'm trying to say is, If you want to try drifting, give it a go. Join the local CAMS/AASA car club, grab a calander and see when theres a practice day or low level drift day and go along and have a run. Sure the Zed isn't ideal for it at the upper levels but it's what you have and it will go sideway's!! Your not going to win, but you will have a lot of fun. While your at it try a motokhana, hillclimb and a clubday (lap sprint) There all a lot cheaper than a fine from the cops.

Surely we should be getting people into this sort of thing and not bagging out new members for suggesting it? Use these great car's for what they were intended for, stock, modified or what ever. Have some real fun with them.

By the way I live in a Hi-lux/Cruiser/Ag200/Big Red type neighborhood!!

Not high champ,  There are at least 5 240/260Z's with in a 20km radius of my house and I hardly live in a high density area!

20km i thought that was all for tas? haha jokes jokes.. please dont kill me.

drift if u got money i guess. with more money comes more zeds

i love the drift.... yep

I love the zed...  yep

i love to drift the zed.... maybe not

Apart from what everyone has brought up here, drifting twists stuff.  chassis for one.

think about seam welding.

think about replacement panel cost

think engine conversion

think broken gearboxes

think tyres

think replacement bushes

think... think ur gonna break some stuff

all of these come into ALL motorsport to a degree, but drift is one step short of all out mechanical carnage.

cars are not designed for drift.  the boffins at nissan and toyota and wherever else do not sit at their desks and say "I know, lets build a moderately priced car, give it 50/50 weight balance and a good power figure, so people can go sideways."  they think "make a great car to sell to people."

Any good, well balanced car can get sideways, can be controlled and can be alot of fun, but that is not the design brief that they were created for.

like i said

i love the drift

i love the zed

i (dont) love to drift the zed

You forgot half shafts, drivelines and gear box's.

Anyway I think they have the message. Drifting costs a lot of cash. If you got heaps to throw down the drain go for it. If you ain't then make a nice Zed and enjoy it on the road.  :D

If you're not prepared to have your car a smoking crumpled shell on the side of the track it shouldn't be used for competition.

Spot on!  If you're going to do any form of motorsport in your car you have to expect that it may end up a write off.

Having said that, yes Z's are rare but not too rare to use for motorsport.  I was just watching historic F1 cars on One HD at Goodwood going at it like there's no tomorrow!  Watching that makes a Z seem about as precious as a rusted out 120Y.  This guy shouldn't be hounded for wanting to drift his Z.  The people that leave them in the shed and never use them should be the ones copping it!

There's been a few good responses in here on the question you actually asked in your original post.  I'm no expert on drifting but mtopxsecret6 had the basics down for starting off I think.  Welded diff, stiff rear bar and springs and lots of castor.  A high ratio steering box would be a huge help if there's any easy conversion out there.  Z's are very predictable and I can confirm they will drift very nicely entry, mid and exit even if it is by accident on cold tyres  ;)  As sco_aus said, a lot of people think you need slippery tyres, etc to drift.  You actually want heaps of grip to carry speed when you're sideways.  Then you also need lots of power to pull through it.

ya im going to give drift a miss atleast for now. i think ill just keep restoring/ daily drive until i got enough cash to get another car to destroy lol. getting a bit off topic but how much have people lowered there zeds for road use?

Posted

Geez one day i might post something controversal and get you lot all worked up instead of my usual boring posts.

Anyway my 2 cents is I wouldnt be restoring a car and then drift it. May be the odd Hill Climb but Drift cars aint pretty shiny things

got to agree with most of the guys above.

instead of repeating again what ppl said above i leave it at that.

though for taking a piss out of drifting saying its gay.

only ones saying that:

A. no talent in driving. drifting is lot harder than it looks

b. dont have balls for it so they bag it.

i love drifiting though i lack both talent and balls. me more of a straight line bitch.  :P (less things going wrong) but seriously want to get into it for fun factor. but no $$  :'( more waiting

as they said ur car u do what u want with it.

love to see a s30 drift car.

Drifting is the nancy boy brother in the motorsport family. ;)

Drifting is the nancy boy brother in the motorsport family. ;)

He is sort of right, Dori dori is all about showing off, from your technique, to how your car looks, it's all about the show off factor. Then, there is the on track skill, having to ability to put your car into situations that it normally wouldn't be put through, And still having control of the vehicle to make it do what you want it to do.

And there is the balls behind it, have you got the ball to go more than 100+, scandanavian flick the car and continue it around a corner.. then transition the car to then go the opposite direction, still whilst maintaining control, In amongst this.. staying on the leaders door handle and trying to over take him.

Hmm.. nancy brother motorsport.. NAH.. Circuit sounds so much more pansy to me.. sure.. you may reach more top speeds along the straights..(yawns..boring).. though when a corner comes.. oooppss.. get some grip.. turn in.. hit the apex.. perfect exit.. oh no.. dont let the back end slide.. we dont want to loose traction..(yawns again.. double boring.. i can still do that in my drift car)

Dorifto is only really rally on tarmac.

Posted

Rally on tarmac, are you kidding?  It is absolutely nothing like rally on tarmac in any form at all.  And is it putting your car into situations that it normally wouldn't be put through, or simply shouldn't?  No "pro" drifting racer boy I've watched at these events hold a candle to professional circuit drivers that I've seen, and often met, let alone a rally car driver I would envisage.

Yes it is fun to occasionally go into a corner and get some tail action, and then kill your tyres on the exit with some opposite lock, but did this really need to evolve into some sport?  No.

Also I should add that it will never be a sport, but a public spectacle (for photo opportunities), with all the bickering that goes on when there are no clear winners, because a winner is judged and is not an obvious outcome.  Its a sport yeah?  A sport in the same realm as ballroom dancing.

The idiocy of drifting as a "motorsport" is observed from the moment the type of crowds that view these daft events are observed, up until the end of the event where the crowds covert it as some "art" and "sport" of "talent" which after watching several drift events (not for my own pleasure I should add - but for work) I am still unaware of.  So please enlighten me.

Also, I would challenge you to find any family in the crowd at drifts.

Posted

ok buddy.. haha.. "PRO" circut racer and all.. far from rally my back side.. haha

And you will find family's at other motorsport's events.. being they went there on there own accord correct?  haha highly unlikely...

Anyways, everyone has there own motorsport they like.

All im saying is, i circuit race, and drift.. why dont you get out and have an actuall go at drift.. see how nancy boy it really is..

Posted

Anyone can have a go at it.  Only need a ricebox with barely 100hp to oversteer.  But I'll leave the bickering for your imbecile drift fag fans.  I don't want to come to this forum to think about drift kid garbage.  Good luck.

Let's agree to disagree on this one. I think each to there own. Obviously no matter what you say the other will never be convinced of your argument. Enjoy your car no matter what you do boy's.

lol whats the point. No one is going to win and hey! If where all the same this world would be boring. I say do what ever you want and be who you are  and experience as much as you can fit in to your life, or you  will always be wondering what is around the corner life is to short for being one eyed

lol sorry guys the drugs in this hospital are pretty good  ;D

getting a bit off topic but how much have people lowered there zeds for road use?

I daily drive my lowered Z on the lowered king springs, someone correct me but I believe it's about a 40mm drop. It's not problem at all. I still angle the car 45 degrees over really big speed bumps but it doesn't bother me much. Check my suspension thread using search if you want to confirm the height.

wow some of the views on this forum emphasis some of the close minded attitude of some of the "more classic" view on motor sport

maybe it is the more varied age of uses of this forum though

yes drift is a spectical sport, maybe thats why i like it because its not about making the car .001 second faster buy spednting rediculus amounts of money on it, you can have a brash "look at me" car uber low with stupid wheels and streched tyres, yes it may be form over function but that is essentail to making it a spectical. the fact that if you see 2 drift cars, one with a more traditional motorsport set up (hieght/ wheels combo) compared to the car that has 10mm ground clearance and wheels with decent offset streched tyres and knowing the fact that if he stuffs up they are going t  leave most there bodykit and exhaust int he sand trap makes t look so much better

my car isnt a powerhouse (s14, basic power mods 180kw but lots of suspension gear) but i walk away with a smile when i go to oran park, swearve towards the base of the bridge at about 5k in 3rd (so about 110/120km/h) kick the cluch and proceded to manji doent te straight ect and link the whole track sideways, the comments i get when people say it looks good ct, tbh i couldnt care, because drifting IS SO STUPID but makes so much sense of trying to control a car out of control

it could be a empty track with just me on it , i still hae the time of my life because its not about how fast you can get from a-b, its about haveing the most fun on the way there

"I drift not because it is a quicker way around a corner, but the most exciting way." -Keiichi Tsuchiya (former JTCC/Le mans driver, now D1GP judge)

end rant

(sorry :P )

HAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHA

guess what mate Z is a RICER BOX..... the grand daaddy of them all....

second u saw the title if u had nothing constructive to say shouldnt have bothered in replying in first place.

yeah u can hav a go at drifting it but can u be good at it?

all i can say go for a ride in one.

been in few race cars.

and nothing scared the crap out of me more than drifiting.

second that is rally the rest gets bit borring for me.nothing wrong with it just not my cup of tea. (not saying they nancy boy racers)

im bit of a ride/adrenalin junkie and ill put ride in drift car way on top of the most extreem rides in QLD followed by rally car.

hence the respect i got for the drift car drivers. U need balls and tallent. Not everyone can do it.

Do still think rally needs more skill and its lot more dangerous than drift and always believed rally drivers are the best drivers around.

im just sick of people having horse blinkers on and disrispecting other peoples views. i dont like lot of other motorsports but i respect people that do.

(this horse blinking also goes on with cars... ie reference to as Ricers Boxes, boys cars etc.... i get that in big quantities with the so called big boys and their muscle cars)

now im just waiting for Lurcheros to whack a paddlock on this  post :P

sorry mate just got me worked up. so even if u lock/delete it no hard feelings.  ;D

I felt obliged to answer because I am passionate about these cars.  I don't want to see a Z go to waste on drifting.  Regardless of my opinions of the sport itself, it's not the most ideal car to use because of the inevitable damage.  I'm sure others that support drifting would feel the same.  The topic in my opinion began out of complete idiocy and disregard for owners of Z cars that spend a lot of time and effort maintaining their car.  That grinds my gears...

I get the feeling your opinion of a "ricer" differs to mine.  No need to get worked up over it.

Yeah I've been in rally cars often (mostly non moving :P) and I have the biggest amount of respect for a sport that takes years to become a professional.  Circuit racing was put down in a previous post.  It's too bad he ignores that to be a top circuit driver, in its various forms, requires them a skill level meaning they had to start racing from a very young age.  In fact many years before they could hold a road license.  To go out and drift a car in those weekend type events is nowhere near that.

I didn't want to drag on the battle of wits here because some people are just likely to not shut up.  Drifting itself was around long before these kind of cars evolved.  And actually, having friends in open wheeler racing, drifting or floating some of those cars around corners are the norm.  "120" km an hour into corners isn't really all that fast if we are talking about motorsport.
