240Z GLASS NEEDED

Hello,

 

I am looking for glass to finish off a full resto on my '73 z. I have tried many options but have come up with nothing.

 

Does anyone have or know anyone who would have NOS or perfect second hand glass (front screen glass is covered)??? This would finish off a perfect example of a 240z, I have not registered the car yet as I am hoping for glass before I install the new door trims.

 

PLEASE HELP......

 

I will be posting images in the resto pages soon, I have attached a few so you can see the detail I have gone to and why the glass is so important.

i have a neighbour down the road that works with old school windscreen and glass, he remove all my glass and mentioned that he might have spares at his workplace, i will ask him and let you know

Wow, where did you get the new fuel filler from?

Over the past 4 years of the resto I have established a lot of good contacts around the world, I have a standing list of parts with all of them and they notify me when parts appear. Just received from Japan a brand new pair of horns.

 

I have used almost all NOS parts in the resto which is why the glass is important.

 

I will ask my contacts if they can source more fuel fillers.

Can't help you with the glass but that is one beautiful build. Can't wait to see more

 

RB30x you can get the filler re-plated and it will look like new or better so long as you or the company plating it puts the prep work in. While you are at it you can get other things like the door locking plates, hood latch etc plated. It isn't too expensive, especially if you get a barrel of things done. Or you can do what galderi does and plate it yourself.

Thanks for the positive comments, it is hard to know if you are achieving a good result.

 

Re-plating is definitely an option, if you're sick like me, you get the new parts and then have them re-plated so all the zinc finish on the car matches.... You may also need to have a few parts redone to get the best result.

I don't have any glass available, but that's one sweet resto.

 

I can relate to re-plating everything. The bit that sux is when parts get lost at the platers...

Not sure I can help on the glass, other than to suggest looking on US eBay for it. However shipping would be risky, the 1/4 windows are pretty sturdy though but not sure about the left and right hand doors.

 

I have a question for you though, can you get 240z door mirrors for a RHD vehicle? I've been searching for 1 of these for a while now.

Very VERY nice job.  Having had a small part in one or two restorations of this scale through work in the last couple of years, I can understand just how much time and money you have invested in it, and my hat is well and truly off.... I don't have the patience to go quite to that extent myself, not to mention the balls to drive/park it anywhere when finished!

 

As far as the glass goes, what we did on one of those cars (Alfas) I mentioned before was get the least scratched windows we could find in our wrecking yard, and have them polished.  Didn't know such a profession existed, but there are guys around who will actually polish glass and can get a lot of light scratches out.  Just recently had a windscreen done for a roadworthy where the plastic backing of the wiper blade had scuffed a patch about 10cm square on the screen, and when the guy was done you'd never know it had been there.

 

So failing the availability of NOS items, I think that could be quite a viable option....

Just a quick note to others on this too, the platers around my area will generally charge the same whether you have one or two items, or a whole bucketfull.  So if you want to get one or two things plated, grab anything you can find around the car that needs to be the same colour, and even handfuls of spare bolts/nuts/washers and chuck them in too.  Having spare bolts etc in also means you can pick the best ones to use if some don't come up so good.

 

Definitely put the hours in yourself to prep them though, as the plating really will not take to any remnants of 40 year old scale and grime, so many hours of wire wheeling is the key here (and will save you some money).

has anyone ever enquired about getting door glass made up?

 

All im thinking is that if a run of say 200 was needed to justify the tooling, it may be worth it.

Lots of us have scratched windows (my drivers is pretty bad)

It also gives us more availability in the event of accidents ect ect.

I am happy to buy any decent 2nd hand glass but this is also hard to find. I have already had my glass polished and is very poor, can you recommend anyone who is good. The guy I used was the man who started polishing in Oz back in the 70's.

Anyway, I to have been looking for a RHD mirror for 3 years with a number of contacts and received unanimous confirmation form Japan that they are NLA. I have tried using a LHD mirror on the right and it looks odd.

 

I will let you know the outcome from a new plater in Queanbeyan that says he can fix the pitting on old mirrors and re-chrome them. The only problem with this is that you must smash the original glass to separate the mirror, no glaziers I can find can then put a mirror back in to retain the factory look.

 

Any glaziers out there want to have go??

No problem just hit the quote button on the post you want to reply to. Yes I've been looking for a drivers side 240z mirror for a RHD car for sometime and have heard they are NLA. As you say the LHD mirror is the only alternative most can come up with, which is not good enough for me.

 

I do know of 1 very resourceful man who may be able to help. He is a member of this forum and pops in on occasion. HS30-H is his name on the forum, AKA Alan in real life .

The problem with the UK RHD mirror is they are slightly different to what we had in OZ (99% sure), do you have a parts catalog you can refer too? Mine is at home.

Not in your area, I'm in Melbourne.  The end result really will depend on the glass you start with though...
