Zednalong Posted August 6, 2009 Posted August 6, 2009 Engine builders I have made another batch of engine performance parts, the indestructible 8 inch, 200 mm BMW harmonic balancer pullies, to keep your cranks together, and the vernier adjustable camshaft gears to get your valve timing precise. aussie240z Posted August 6, 2009 Posted August 6, 2009 What sort of prices and delivery/freight to Sydney? Thanks ian Quote
luvemfast Posted August 6, 2009 Posted August 6, 2009 Isn't there a rule that to advertise in classifieds you actually need to have a price (just beating the mods to it) How much to deliver to 3138? Quote
Mr240z Posted August 7, 2009 Posted August 7, 2009 Whats the price on the indestructible 8 inch, 200 mm BMW harmonic balancer. Gone though 2 std ones in the past year.. Quote
RB30X Posted August 7, 2009 Posted August 7, 2009 Gone though 2 std ones in the past year.. How do you go through a balancer?? Standard ones last longer than the car itself? Quote
Mr240z Posted August 7, 2009 Posted August 7, 2009 How do you go through a balancer?? Standard ones last longer than the car itself? I pretty sure I've reved it to hard on a couple of times & spun the front crank bolt. 1st time lost the bolt and balancer came lose and took out a big chip where the balancer slids onto the crank.. 2nd time done the same...Put crank bolt on with loctite and a 3/4" rattle gun. so far so good.. Anyone got a pic of the bmw balancer. Quote
Administrators gav240z Posted August 7, 2009 Administrators Posted August 7, 2009 How do you go through a balancer?? Standard ones last longer than the car itself? The standard balancer is not very good. The rubber in them deteriorates and causes harmonic vibrations that could destory your crank bearings. You can rebuild them, but its my understanding that the cost of refurbishing them means that you may as well upgrade to something more durable. Len could you please post prices with parts you're advertising? Thanks Quote
dat2kman Posted August 7, 2009 Posted August 7, 2009 FWIW I will not use the BMW balancer on my race car, We had one on John McKeons red and yellow ( ex Lex and Larry Greenhalgh lightweight 240) and a race at Qld raceway the outer ring separated from the centre, it turned the fan belt, and was only held in approx position by the fan belt not coming off. Only indication was red and yellow lamps coming on at around 7000 rpm up back straight. If you get one, get it CHECKED for any rubber de-bonding Now, I use a BHJ, it will never separate the inner from the outer, and is superior at approx $800, exxy but it's insurance. Sorry to cause a worry, but, hey, just get them looked at, same for stocko units too. Quote
viking Posted August 7, 2009 Posted August 7, 2009 Sorry guys, get over it, I've blown a few- Lens style are the bast option for track work, and mine is a Lindsay Drife one. Quote

Sorry mate I'm not 100% certain I know what you are saying here? Get over what exactly? Could you elaborate any further? Quote
Zednalong Posted August 20, 2009 Author Posted August 20, 2009 Hi Zeders What have I started with my harmonic balancers, all I know is that BMW make one of the best harmonic balancer there is, that is why I use it. I ran the biggest heaviest Z one I could find on my Targa car in 98, it lasted three days, I rebuilt it, it lasted one more day before it disintegrated again and split the casting through the keyway. I put on another Cheepie, I finished the Targa carefully. A month or so later at Sandown it buggered up to, but in the process I did the number one big end bearing on a relatively new motor, ( the other journals were perfect ) a direct result of the shaft harmonics shaking the guts out of the crank, I then built a BMW one, it has been on there since 98, and done two more Targa’s, and races ever since. An L series revving to 6500 to 6800 RPM, a standard one will last almost forever, but if you accidentally, or deliberately go over 7000 RPM, they are finished, not to mention what you are doing to your engines internals. Since the new one I have still accidentally almost hit 8000 coming out of very wet hairpin corners in low or 2nd gear, and instant revs. Ideally they should a flywheel on each end of the crank, so the BMW balancer is the next best thing, I make mine so big it clears the water pump pulley by only 4 mm. The further you get the balancer out from the crank, the more stable it makes the crank. Some of you may have read that BRE fitted finned alloy sumps to there race cars in the 70’s for cooling, the harmonics were so bad through the block, that it sheared all the centre sump bolts on each side of the block, that gives you some idea of what's happening in your poor little Z engine at full works, and the power loss. I have proved it does the job, that’s why I build and sell them. I also made and fitted an engine girdle, a 4 mm high tensile steel plate that covers the bottom of the block between the sump and the block to turn the engine block into a solid box instead of an upside down channel that can twist and wobble The harmonic balancers by the way are $380 each, plus GST if applicable, and freight, depending on your post code. Moderators Zedman240® Posted August 20, 2009 Moderators Posted August 20, 2009 Len, are the pulley diameters the same for the fan belt? or are they under-driven? Thanks I know several people running the BMW style balancer with no issues. I'm tempted to give one a shot! Quote
RB30X Posted August 21, 2009 Posted August 21, 2009 Depending on the answer to the question above (underdriven would be prefered) sign me up for one. Oh, and post up a pic, i want to see how pretty they are. cheers Quote
