DaveDimo Posted July 20, 2009 Posted July 20, 2009 hey guys wana know if an rb20 like out of a 32 skyline will bolt up to my original datsun 3 speed auto gearbox, will i hit any problems? has anyone done this before.? dave Quote
Zeddophile Posted July 20, 2009 Posted July 20, 2009 Dunno how you'd go with mating the auto driveplate up, and can't remember whether RB series bellhousing pattern is the same as L series...... The big question is WHY? If you want an auto, why not use an R32 auto along with the engine, or am I missing something? The old datsun auto is not the most efficient unit around, if going to the hassle of putting an RB in, might as well upgrade the auto as well (or go manual, but obviously you don't want that). I'd be surprised if the cost difference is much between keeping the old auto or fitting an R32 unit, unless the driveplates AND bellhousings are the same... Quote
C.A.R. Posted July 20, 2009 Posted July 20, 2009 What happend to being anal about "keeping my 260Z 2+2 100% original"? Quote
Mr Camouflage Posted July 20, 2009 Posted July 20, 2009 I doubt it, otherwise everyone would be bolting up RB gearboxes as a replacement for L gearboxes. Quote
RBZ 260 Posted July 20, 2009 Posted July 20, 2009 i chucked out 2 rb auto boxes. nobody wants them as everyone wants 5spd..... seen on ebay sell for $1 LOL just use the RB 4spd auto and get the tail shaft redone if needed. the 4spd is lot better not to say fairly bulletproof. Dependin how u position the motor u possibly could use the L series tailshaft directly. its lot easier and lot cheaper to use the rb auto. most importers will give them away with the motor just to get rid of them Quote
DaveDimo Posted July 21, 2009 Author Posted July 21, 2009 trust lurch to say that lol. this is just out of curiosity because i have the opertunitiy to buy a cheap rb20 and i hate these cold starts in the morning, it bugs me how i cant just reach in through the wondow and just turn the key and have the car run while i get other shit ready. new cars dont have that problem it seems to be a really good idea to put the new motor in but 5 grans later done properly with after market computer and what not. this sounds like a big job. i got some thinking to do... Moderators Zedman240® Posted July 21, 2009 Moderators Posted July 21, 2009 Just inject your L series motor...I did that all the time when I had my L series motor in the zed! Quote
RBZ 260 Posted July 22, 2009 Posted July 22, 2009 why do people waste money on aftermarket ecu for RB? silly realy they can be chiped easily for more than street applications. let face it most of the RB conversion are getting done for street applications. so u not going to have a 10k turbo on it running 40psi pressure that requires an aftermarket ecu. they cheap and they will run the engine properly. not to say u can do the wiring yourself. nissan did a briliant job of the loom. it only needs the ignition pinout changed and its virtualy plug and play to the S30. 6 wires all u need to hook up. easier than car stereo install. but anyway people like listening to workshops that rip them off. ;D been there done that and seen the light. Good advice right there some of us have no choice as we can't run a AFM so have to use a MAP and TBS for our throttle bodies. But if I was sticking with a standard RB intake setup then that is very sound advice. Re the question about the auto trans - the RB to L6 - well for one the bellhousing is setup for the L6 which leans to the drivers side of the car (well on our RHD cars it does) were as the RB will lean to the left. So even if the L6 auto does bolt up at the bellhousing you will have issue with the trans cross member and the selector locations (I have not owned a auto zed for 10 years so can't recall how the selector setup works anymore) I would got for a RB 4spd auto if you must have an auto. But then a L6 with a little money can perform very well, just because the RB is cheap does not make it better than your current setup. So first think 1. What do you want to achieve? 2. What is your budget? 3. What look to you want? 4. Would a EFI install fix the issues? If EFI is the fix be it L6 or RB both require the following work 1. ECU (stick with a stock unit for the budget and they can be chipped later for performance) 2. Wiring of the ECU (as stated above not too big of a job as Nissan did it right from the get go) 3. Pump upgrade to EFI spec 4. Fuel line upgrade (ie return line - some 260z have the EFI lines already - mine did ie the return line is same size as the feeder to the engine bay) 5. Surge tank (the stock carb fuel tank does not have the correct baffles) however only required if performance and running a low tank ie under 1/2 way - but who want to keep fulling up the car and leaving all that old fuel in the tank. 6. A lift pump to the surge tank 7. A fuel pump/EFI relay That is just some of it - so that is were some of the $$ go and you should consider these cost in the EFI or RB with EFI conversion as they can add up and might be more than the cheap engine you can get. Just some thoughts Cheers Mike Quote
