But this is now on hold mid way through as I borrowed a friends mig welder and he wants it back to do some work of his own.......How rude Yep 1mm will do the trick Old habits die hard Ive always been on the overkill side of things, and yes I realize FG and CF replacement bumpers etc are widely used in stead of OEM I hope you get it done, I'll be very keen to see the results, sorry to hear about the short term loan of the MIG, a pain in the ar#e when your on a mission I assumed a heavier sheet as you have removed your rear end protection so to speak as theres not a lot out back otherwise, my thoughts were you were trimming the bumper mounts back a tad to weld an anti intrusion bar behind your new plate Cheers Quote

Funny i just stumbled across this thread, i've just spent the last couple of weeks doing the exact same thing to my S130! Except I'm not planning on respraying the car and dad hasn't taught me how to weld yet so am actually making a panel that will bolt in where yours is welded. Today I pretty much finished the foam mold and means of attatching using bolts and pop rivetts (incase i need to take off one day). Then need to glass it and paint. We'll have to compare once we're both done, headin into exams soon so might put mine on hold a bit. HAHA!!! MATE, just looking at your thread on your front air dam... are you the same person as me!! thats the same front I have as well! AND im about to start brewing beer... except you win coz you've gotyourself a bloody 2 seater, theres a bloke at swinburne (Russ his name is i think; copper coloured 280) who has that nose as well. But I saw a pic somewhere on HybridZ, that made me change my mind to go the full welded version. If you know how to make a fibreglass mold, I'll teach you how to weld. As a trade, kind of like a labour swap. are you the same person as me!! Depends on whether you're really, really ridiculously good looking. Then you're like me! Quote
dave_hl Posted May 23, 2009 Posted May 23, 2009 Yeah full welded with no seams will look sick. not all that practical in my circumstance however. Sounds like a good trade in theory but just because i more or less know how to fiberglass doesn't mean im any good at it. I'll be putting more effort into this job than other glassing jobs ive done though. Lot's of prep work and sanding and patience should make it look alright. You can come round when i get to that stage and i'll show you if you're interested though. Also one thing i noticed is you're keeping a tow point. I considered this but have sort of decided it would look too ugly and they'd probably be able to tie something around my diff and tow me or use my front one if needed. What are your thoughts on this? Righto, i'm over near Balwyn/Boxhill area, and yeah i guess you could say im pretty darn fantastically stunning, i did just do a homeless awareness photo shoot for a mates uni project. Quote
luvemfast Posted July 23, 2009 Author Posted July 23, 2009 Here is an update from last weeks work. It has all since been rubbed down with 800 grit and is ready for paint. Went into the hospital to see the new addition to a mates family, a new baby boy. And I was talking to him, he is a panel beater by trade. He offered to take the Z around to his workshop to paint it in the spraybooth Woo Hoo. Thats gotta be better than my makeshift booth with a dusty floor. Anyway, I'm happy with the rear panel work. Has been lots of work, would be over 20 hours of sanding alone. Obviously would be less for a pro, but I wanted to be happy with the final product. Last pic is of the first fit of the front spoiler. Just waiting for a phone call for when his wife will let him paint it. Quote

I started it in January as a 4 week job, 9 months later its going to the booth. I did plan on entering a few sprints this year but have missed the whole season. There's always next year. Quote

Next Sunday will be spent giving it a wet rub while watching the Big Race sinking a few quite beers. Big ups to my mate Stu for painting it for me Amazing to see how fast and efficient he does it, would have taken me a month of Sundays to do what he did in hours. Quote

luvemfast Posted November 11, 2009 Author Posted November 11, 2009 Here is un update of the painting. Firstly, I spent many hours sanding it down with 1200, the 1500. Only to have my panelbeater mate tell me to do it some more. So I sanded some more. Then I sanded some more. Then I had a beer........... and sanded some more. Get the picture? So my buddy came over with the buff to run over it. I then went over it with some black swirl remover polish, wasn'e happy so I did it 2 more times. Then a nice coat of wax. I prefer to use McGuires products. Value for money seems to be pretty good. I was pretty happy with how the rear panel came up. Can't wait to put all the bits back on, then get the carbies tuned and fit the catchcan. Hope I will make the Christmas BBQ. Quote
