RB26DETT Posted January 19, 2009 Posted January 19, 2009 just out of interest as per the subject: what is the most you would you pay for a 2 seater this is for either a 240z or 2 seater 260z still with L series engine no special models (HS30-H etc etc) just a base model rebuilt really well is around 20K too much? I know that it cost more than that to do a good rebuild, but just wondering what are buyers willing to pay? Quote
Administrators gav240z Posted January 19, 2009 Administrators Posted January 19, 2009 Depends on what's been done to it. If I was in the market for a totally original concourse car I could justify paying up to $35k for it myself. Especially an early 1970 240z with the vented hatch and other unique bits. Serial number less than 400. If its just a well rebuilt car but not concourse standard I would pay anywhere from 20-30k. I would pay less for a 260z 2 seater though, probably at most $20k. Perhaps as part of this thread we should attach images of cars we have seen around the net and what we think they would be worth if they were on the market? Obviously I wouldn't want to offend anyone though, so we should say this is just subjective and the open market could yeild different results. Quote
RBZ 260 Posted January 20, 2009 Posted January 20, 2009 good idea Gavin. be good to see. If anyone gets offended well everyone has their opinion so there is no correct answear and people shouldn't be offended. most of us spend lot more on our cars than what they worth. we will never get back what we invested its a loss anyway. so lets see some pics and valuations Quote
nuclear_z Posted January 20, 2009 Posted January 20, 2009 Well I paid $13,500 for my 73 240z. It has a pretty decent paint job with only a couple of humidity bubbles and a tiny rust patch on the drivers sill. It has an OK interior, with new carpets and had nice looking buckets that weren't good for the road... No sound system, sound deadening, or heater/aircon system. Lots of work done to the suspension with koni adjustable shocks and adjustable arms and sway bars. Engine is an L28 injected turbo that was running a hideous tune and sounded a bit bad, but compression was spot on and the leak down test showed promising results. Quote
Michael Posted January 20, 2009 Posted January 20, 2009 haha Ash, Well i've clocked up about 7-8 "Justify'd" along on a half decent shell / bodywork / Paint, and engine "only in my opinion" It actually reminds me alot of my 240z i brought 6 months ago, Which i might throw some pics up in a minute when i brought it, And see what people think, But yes i think 9.5 - 10,000 Would have been my limit, * Ive also noticed that cars in different states will be worth more/less depending on location Anyway the opinion Of a 18yr old That doesnt Have as much money to throw around as some other members on zeds, So i may be abit of a stinge..., - Michael Quote
stevo_gj Posted January 20, 2009 Posted January 20, 2009 I got my 260 2 seater for a bargain but I reckon I would have paid about 8K for it, no more. It was stock standard mechanically but had a side stripe and a black vinyl roof and 280z badges which made it very 'unoriginal'. I think if it had been kept standard it would have been definetly worth 10K plus. Quote
RBZ 260 Posted January 20, 2009 Posted January 20, 2009 i can't give evaluations if i was going to buy a car. know too much about them. only way to find what the value of the car is to check them all out and compare them. from my recent trip interstate taught me few things about buying a decent car privetly. a. pictures can be decieving b. u cannot screw the price down heaps on small things.(only silly me does it) c. the right buyer will come just may take some time. now going back to Z. u got to compare the car in same specs. similar cars red and black both 260z 2 seater. one was half the price of the other. one buyer wanted stock other modifed. basicaly its oranges with apples. cant compare. one way to do it is to compare how much would the unmoded car cost to get to the modded one and vice versa. depending on quality work i bet you the black one was better deal. but if u look at it the other way can u sell the things of the modded to bring it to stock? prob if that way u better of with the red one. ive seen 240 2 seaters from 5k to 35k 35k being a show car which is about the norm for show cars these days. 2k will almost buy u a parts car. 5K pretty much a registered roughy a defectable car 10k bit better cond but it will need bit of work. 15k getting cleaner with few tweaks needed to make perfect 20k clean cars not as good as show ones but in very good condition. 260 2 seater seem to be bit lower but not that much. 260 2+2 are all over the place. from 1.5k just about runners to fairly clean cars around 10k but have seen examples as high as 40k. there was one on ebay with a v8 conversion convertible with mountain of work guy was initialy after 40k droped it to 35 and 30 and than it disapeared did it sell or not not sure. he prob spent over 100k on the damn thing.but havent seen it since for sale. i had a post asking the value for mine as i was thinking of selling it. Shannons insured it for 16k sight unseen and knowing it wasnt complete. but if they checked it out they said wouldnt have any issues insuring it for 20k. and when complete will be even more. but question is what is it worth to someone else? to me it cost me 3 years of hard work. and quite a few thousands in materials. if i was paying for work the bill would have been closer to 50k if not more. anyway enough of my ranting. i think the key point is buyers hold the key. Agree with Everything said RBZ 260, But i also Think this thread can still be used, As more of a Hypothetical Fun way to see how much your car/others similar "could" sell for / How much people are Willing to pay for Zeds in certain conditions I just think some peoples views of "pretty much a registered roughy a defectable car" might be fairly different And pictures might help abit with new buyers to zeds, anyway again just an opinion. - Michael Quote
zedevan Posted January 20, 2009 Posted January 20, 2009 i'd have to say it depends on the value of other cars that are out there that i'd also probably be happy driving around, such as an r32 gtr or lotus 7 replica. which is where i'm having trouble now looking at putting that sorta money into the zed. personally i couldn't understand my 260z ever being worth more than either of those cars with only its orginal running gear, although i could for an early orginal 240z, but then it probably shoudln't be driven more than 10 times a year so woudln't be worth it to me in my current financial position. it will be interesting to see what happens to their value with the economy and 'climate change' crap Quote
Scoota G Posted January 20, 2009 Posted January 20, 2009 I purchased my 2 seater 260Z for $900 in 1997. ;D Quote
Moderators Zedman240® Posted January 20, 2009 Moderators Posted January 20, 2009 I think RBZ260's price guide was just about spot on: 2k will almost buy u a parts car. 5K pretty much a registered roughy a defectable car 10k bit better cond but it will need bit of work. 15k getting cleaner with few tweaks needed to make perfect 20k clean cars not as good as show ones but in very good condition. My first 260 2 seater 77 model I paid $2600 in about 95-96. Back then I didn't know they were available in a 2 seater! Thought it looked different so I bought it. A friend who got me hooked had 2+2's so I thought get something a little different. This zed was a bit rough but complete. Loads of bog and some rust but nothing really bad. After about 5-6 years and throwing about 10-12K of mods at it I sold it for $10.5K. Next 260 again was a 2 seater, paid $5000 as a rolling shell but the good point was the body work was all done. Owner lost interest and a lot of the parts! Missing engine, radiator, glass, fuel tank and heaps of bits and pieces. Rebuilt it, drove it around for a while and then sold it on ebay for $10,500 again! Reason for sale was a friend offered me my current 240Z. Unable to own both, I had to sell the other. In 2005 a paid $12,000 for this 70 early 240Z needing a fair bit of work still but thankfully had a rotisserie resto job done on it not long ago with zero rust! Pitty about the non existent interior...Still spending on it so a total isn't available... Quote
RBZ 260 Posted January 20, 2009 Posted January 20, 2009 well some prices to throw around what i bought. 1972 240z with l28 with blown headgasket and 2 defect stickers set me back 2 years ago $1800. has rust it is rough but not a throw away definetly a fixer. my 260z 2+2 non goer with sized motor shot interior but respectable body paid 500 plus half the rego which totaled around $600 with delivery spent in parts and materials only over 16k and still not finished (thats major parts with reciepts) not to count the niggly little things 50 here and 50 there add up. personaly its hard for me to sell this car but i wouldnt wanna let it go less than 20K as is. but it is a very customised 260z. latest purchase i got was a 1970 matching number engine/car from a late friends wife for $500. now there isnt much left that this car doesnt need to be looked at. it is a bucket.but it does have lot of good points. could be saved with a donor car. its not defected and it is s1.its mostly complete. plan was to use the defected 72 to rebuild the more sought after 70s with matching engine but its gona be lot of work. or since its 1970 and doesnt have many ADRs it can be easily hot roded without too many issues. other prices that i found that most people wont know about. just last week at damaged car auctions non damaged 260z 2+2 not bad condition needed paint and few little rust spots bt realy good car went for $1650 but it didnt get to the reserve. 260z 2 seater with vg30det (seen here for sale few times) but ended as a wreck on auction with medium damage at the back final price $3650. local sales ive seen 260z 2+2 fairly rough. guy woudnt think about droping less than 4k. i wouldn't pay 1k. but it did sell. so it is what it is on offer and what people want. what makes them fall in love to pay the premium. RB26DETT Posted January 20, 2009 Author Posted January 20, 2009 i think there are lots of variables. this are my values for a 2 seater z parts car: 2k-3k registered car with original paint: 5k-8k car with a good respray and generally tidy 10k-14k full rotisserie type rebuild: 15k-25k (maybe more depending on mods) I guess it all depends on the buyer - gone are the days that you could buy good 240z for 2k-5k personally I have gone through a rebuild already and at the moment dont have the time to do the same thing again so the idea of buying something "already done" is attractive I can understand that some people would also consider what other cars they could own instead if they are going to pay top money for a z point of the thread is i guess to see if people are willing to pay for the cars that have had full rotisserie type rebuild or are people more inclined to buy rough cars and go through the process themselves as time and money permits Quote
