gilltech Posted January 6, 2009 Posted January 6, 2009 I've now seen several 240/260 Zeds done this way - it always reminds me of the 2-tone later-shape 280ZX colour scheme, commonly blue/silver or gunmetal/silver as I recall; the first one I saw I just assumed the owner was trying to update the styling of his older car as this was when the 280ZX was still available new in the late 80's! However, I think a few of the (American) 280Z cars were delivered in 2-tone schemes, just before the 280ZX shape arrived? Personally, I think the 240/260 has a purity of line that doesn't really need complication, but if the 2-tone scheme is selected with much thought & care it can look quite good - the demarkation line has to be picked very carefully over the c-pillar/rear guard hip for it to work at all viewing angles; I once saw one car where it wasn't quite right, which spoilt it. Many of the 240/260 race cars from the 70's had two-tone or three-tone schemes & look pretty cool today. Time for Photoshop? Quote
zedevan Posted January 6, 2009 Posted January 6, 2009 there was a nice looking one on hybridz that looked awesome except the two tone wasn't extended onto the headlight buckets, which just looked weird - i wonder if this is the same car. a bit over a year ago i was playing around with the idea and ended up with this dodgy photoshop which i think looks ok, but is way to busy and over the top for a road car... Take the dark line off around the bonnet buldge and I think you may have something there. I quite like it especially with the stripes on the fenders. My personal taste would see darker colours used instead. Quote
Administrators gav240z Posted January 6, 2009 Administrators Posted January 6, 2009 I love the two tone paint jobs. I have been considering painting my 240z silver with the top half in a burgundy metallic red. Hard to explain, but in my head I know the style I'm thinking of. Evan the Z you posted looks great. I agree with Andrew a bit more subtle around the bonnet bulge and it would look really good. I like looking at Hot Rod sites for paint job ideas. http://www.chipfoose.com/gallery.aspx My old 240z has some nice pinstriping down the side of it. I think done correctly it can really offset the style of the car. When and if I get time, I'd like to get into 3D Studio Max or equivelant and using a 240z model try out different paint / rims and spoiler kits to see what looks good on an early S30. Don't know when and if I'll get the time though. Quote
HELLFIRE! Posted January 6, 2009 Posted January 6, 2009 Zedevan's paint job idea reminds me of a running shoe (addidas?) and considering the proportions of the ol' S30, is probably appropriate. Nice work Zedevan. Quote
Hunter Posted January 6, 2009 Posted January 6, 2009 I used to use 3D Studio max back in school. My brother is a pro at it, I might give him a model of a 240Z that I have and get him to make a 3D model of it for me. Everytime I get him a present I go around the next day and he has it modelled and animated on the computer. Quote
OZ001 Posted January 6, 2009 Posted January 6, 2009 my zed is gonna be looking like this but instead of the green it'll be a metallic blue colour Quote
zedevan Posted January 6, 2009 Posted January 6, 2009 just for those who haven't seen the car i stole the side stripes off i'm gonna paint my car either of the colours used in the photoshop, then if i ever get bored with it do the other 'tone'. with the suggestion to remove the black stripe on the bonnet, i assume you mean to remove the white on the bulge also? Everytime I get him a present I go around the next day and he has it modelled and animated on the computer. That's awesome. I love photoshop, but having a 3d model would be even better. I love custom paint jobs but I don't want to waste money on something that won't sit right. Evan, didn't even realise you photoshopped it. Upon closer inspection its obvious now, but at first I thought that's how it was. Well done I guess. The old race 240z's are great for paint job ideas. Quote
620Z Posted January 7, 2009 Posted January 7, 2009 Evan I would also paint the flared guards the similar grey (Not black) and it would look pretty good! Certainly original. Quote

I have 3DS Max and have been wanting to do the same thing but am too busy/lazy Quote

It is you car do it how ever you like. But leaving the white on the buldge I would say you would want to continue the wide stripe to the rear of the car, maybe with a medium greay pinstripe. It would look good all grey ontop aswell. Quote
Hunter Posted January 7, 2009 Posted January 7, 2009 I will do a post when and if my brother does a decent job of the 3D Mesh. I am sure he will make it look accurate but probably not exactly measured. Quote

But leaving the white on the buldge I would say you would want to continue the wide stripe to the rear of the car, maybe with a medium greay pinstripe sure is, just wondering what your opinion/advice exactly was. so my car doesn't stand out TO much intially i'll be leaving it a single colour with an offset stripe, although i'm sure i'll change my mine...hopefully my car is back on the road within the time frame of NZedder's Quote
zedevan Posted January 9, 2009 Posted January 9, 2009 here are pics of the two tone 240z i was talking about from hybridz, i dont know his reason for not doing the headlight buckets, but think it looks weird - however i think his pin stripe down the side looks awesome Quote
