Hello everybody!

ive just purchased a 1978 260 2+2 with an L28 and other little goodies.

the car is meant to be a daily driver but im still a little scared driving it and getting used to it. the idle wasent happy when i bought it and it stalled at every lights on the way home. ive adjusted the idle now to about 900rpm and it seems much happier.

also still trying to get the hang of the choke, and it has an electronic ignition.

any tips and pointers on how to get settled in would be greatly appreciated! :)

Welcome aboard and welcome to a non EFI engine.

Its always a battle, especially when they are cold. With SU carbies you can never be sure when you take off what will happen....

I would get the carbies professionally tuned as well as an electrical tune.

Post some photos of the rocket.

the engine has only done about 2000km since it was built, so the carbys should be ok shouldnt they? also when i turn the car off sometimes it shudders like its stalling???

i think i will consider the efi upgrade just to make it al litte more drivable as i need the car to get to work and such. the engine has had abit of work its bored and has big headers and bigger fuel jets, also balanced flywheel and crank and quad core radiator.

EDIT: also the speedometer reads crazy speeds! where can i get this fixed??

the "running on" when you turn the engine off could be due to a number of things (over compressed engine or poor ignition timing)......get the carbs and ignition tuned properly preferrably on a dyno by someone who knows what they are doing......once tuned Hitachi SUs (240 carbs) are a beautiful thing and use 98 RON fuel.

SU carbs need choke to start and warm up........once up to temp within 10 mins of driving the car should run choke free.....once the mixture has been tuned correctly the car should be easy to drive and idle faultlessly.

once you flick the swithc (ign) no longer any elec feed to coil and plugs etc, so ign timing has no effect on this in real sense, but valv timing, hotspots (to hotter spark plug) or as said above over comp'd engine with poor fuel. also too much fuel ie large fuel jets and not bigger needles allows too much fuel @ idle to bypass the needles.

till then just hold brake and slowly let clutch out as it dies, also stops ther car going anywhere by leaving it in gear, will take a few tries, but will stop it over-running which also makes it harder to start again, especially when it back runs!!!
