reverendzed Posted June 2, 2008 Posted June 2, 2008 I thought that the excess water consumption had to be going somewhere! I found it today in the form of an oil milkshake...the head gasket must have blown! My problem is that my new motor should be ready to drop in within 2 weeks, my question is will it keep going that long? does anybody have any tips on keeping it going or should I just pray! Rev. Scoota G Posted June 2, 2008 Posted June 2, 2008 Yea keep the revs low Rev The water should turn into steam with the Heat of the engine. Quote
V8Datto Posted June 2, 2008 Posted June 2, 2008 Can you tighten up the head bolts with a torque wrench? Maybe a little more force will stop it? Or does this risk striping the treads and destroying the block I had a blown head gasket on a L4 1.8L once, I drove that poor thing until it would use all the water in the engine/radiator in a 30min slow drive, also when I tried to start it again it would stop turning when no1 piston got to TDC, I assumed it was leaking in and stopping the engine from turning over because if I lifted the bonnet and turned the engine by hand just a little, it would fire up. In the end I removed the head, had it shaved, new head gasket and it's still running Quote
Enzo Posted June 2, 2008 Posted June 2, 2008 Hi Rev, Stop using the car immediatley or risk destroying the motor. Quicker to replace the head gasket than than risking further damage to the rotating parts or possibly warping a head. David. Quote
oldmates260z Posted June 2, 2008 Posted June 2, 2008 There are water additives that you can use to reduce the loss of water, one i know of is "Camiweld" or something like that... I would never use it as it then seals things you do not want, like some cores in your radiator. I agree with enzo, park it and catch a bus otherwise another motor may bit the dust. You should be able to do a head gasket only if you are desparate for the wheels Quote
sco_aus Posted June 2, 2008 Posted June 2, 2008 For the sake of future zedists, please save another engine, parts are getting harder and harder to find and so are engines. My advice, stop driving it (please ). Quote
620Z Posted June 2, 2008 Posted June 2, 2008 Rev if you need the car as a daily driver Rent a wreck for a couple of weeks. Should only cost a couple of hundred. Close to where I work they are selling a crappy small car for $370-. OK if you need some wheels for a month even if you sell it after wards for $200-. Just an alternative. Quote
nat0_240_chevZ Posted June 4, 2008 Posted June 4, 2008 top it up and leave the rad cap off..... stop the water pressure build up, keep an eye on the oil level, if it takes on too much water then stop driving, but if it lowers then you should be ok to keep it going, the water in the oil 'should' evaporate out if no more goes in, but it may just get you by for a couple of weeks. dont worry bout the shortage of l6's as there are plenty around as more than the z's came with them anyways, and if they beome extinct then its RB or other time!!! nat0 Quote
