Custom Piston Manufacturer Recommendations ?

Anybody with recommendations for / experience with suppliers of custom pistons ?

 

Looking to get a set of high comp pistons made to use in an L-series race engine with FJ20 rods.

Contact JE in the states, cheaper than you'd expect and very nice.

Otherwise SPS in Dandenong make a good slug but to the best of my knowledge they don't do any fancy shit like JE

I have used JP Pistons in South Australia to replace the no longer available mitsubishi pistons that were in my L28 in the green car. 

 

Was more than happy with price and quality.

We're talking 4 cylinders, its an L18 so basically an L28 with a couple less cylinders.

 

Looking to run a proper race cam, which will need a domed piston to get compression up high enough (12:1 or more), plus running FJ20 rods will mean a pretty short piston. Bore will be as close as I can get to 88mm, more would be good for breathing with big valves but I don't like my chances since the L18 starts off 1mm smaller bore than an L28.

 

Hadn't hear of JP, will give them and SPS a buzz. Would rather keep it in Australia if possible but may try JE to see how much cheaper.

JP don't do forged pistons - stock replacement pistons only.

 

Colin at SPS is very helpful. Tell him the specs of your engine and he'll manufacture a forged piston to suit.

No actually true - Colin makes some very trick pistons.
Only difference being is that the forging he uses is different to what JE and CP use - i.e. not as shiny as the Yank items when finished. There is a reason for this...

Another recommendation for SPS in Dandy.

 

From my experience the US manufacturers are very difficult to deal with and don't really want to respond to questions etc

 

How many valves per cylinder are you using. 4?

No, only 2 valve 

 

I've been to-ing and fro-ing, but decided I want one last crack at building a "proper" L-series before I have move to the dark side of multi cams and lots of valves.

JE pistons great to deal with -

 

Don't go through Rebello racing (I was sent the wrong product, got an apology, then they offered to fix the error if I returned the pistons to them at my own cost, or get them fixed here and they would cover costs. Gave them the cost to fix there mistake and they refused to pay, stopped answering emails and abused me on the phone!)
