Hi Guys,

 

Can anyone recommend anyone for media blasting my car back to bare metal in Sydney?

Has anyone also had experience with the mobile blasting guys?

 

I've been looking at the different methods and it seems to be the way to go to find any possible rust problems. I've also read that sandblasting/home sandblasting can damage or warp panels due to how rough it is.

I do not have a large garage/work area, so this also plays a part in what I can be doing at home.

 

Any tips appreciated!

I'd be very careful getting external panels sand blasted especially by a home blaster type business. The panels on an S30z are pretty thin compared to American cars also so if a business has no experience working on say early rotaries or other classic Japanese stuff I'd be wary.

 

Manually stripping can be more work, but each car can require a different approach. How bad is the car? Chemical dipping is another option.

Hi Gav,

 

I was looking at soda/dustless blasting, I understand they're a lot less damaging to the thin metal than sandblasting.

 

I've attached a couple of photos of the rust damage, this is pretty much the extend of it. 

 

With manual stripping, is it better to go with sanding? Or go down the chemical route with stripper.

Advanced Sandblasting at Brookvale did mine and I was delighted with their work.

 

It is some of the best value for your time/money you will spend and it really is the correct approach at the start of a project. If you'll forgive the pun, it kinda draws a line in the sand on the work required for the whole project. One of the major advantages of a professional service is they prime the shell immediately after blasting to prevent further corrosion. I had mine in primer for the best part of 5-6 years with no dramas.

Any other recommended media blasters???

 

I called Austec dry stripping and was quoted approx $3500 for a rolling shell, externally they use the plastic media which is more sensitive and normal soda on the floor firewall etc..

Soda does not remove rust, it only removes paint. If you don't want to do a full ground-up resto you could repair those isolated sections of rust. For doing this, I find a crumpet wheel (clean n strip wheel) works best. Just make sure you move around and don't put too much heat into an area removing paint. Paint stripper is a messy job, and I tend to steer clear of it.

 

I have also used advanced at Brookvale for hanging panels, and have been very happy with their work. If you want to leave it for a long time get them to put it in epoxy primer rather than etch primer.

Any other suggestions as to a good place in Sydney? Somewhere more towards Penrith? looking at getting this done to mine as well, only mines pretty well only got acrylic primer on it now and some surface rust, mainly just want to get it blasted and 2 pak primed if anyone has a suggestion?

 

I have been considering just paint stripping it given its only acrylic paint but its still a rather large task. What did you end up doing to yours Josiah?

If you're after a one stop experience, you could try Outer West Smash Repair and Resto on Coombes Drive, Penrith.

 

I have no experience with them at all and have not spoken to anyone that has had work done by them. I was fueling up my Z one afternoon and a sky blue, Datsun Sports/Fairlady pulled up on the forcourt, the guy hopped out and almost ran over to me. He introduced himself as Marcel Santini. Apparently he is the owner of OWSR and he seemed like a very keen Datsun fan. Unlike most smash repair folk, he seemed very keen to take on resto work.

 

I did ask him whether the work they did was good or shite. While he was taken aback by the question, he seemed genuine in the belief that his company produced a quality result for his customers. This is their facebook page:

As I said, I have no affiliation or experience with them. Maybe you can get some work done and then tell me what they're like.

Marcel is a humble and honest guy who is reasonably priced. My RA23 Celica was booked with him for September but I sold it. But will take the S30 to him for another quote.
