Wtb: Topy Steelies Date Stamped 1970 And D Datsun Wheel Covers/hubcaps.

Hi Everyone,

 

No rush on this but I'd like to find a set of TOPY wheels date stamped 1970 to suit a 240z. I've found a set in the US and will import them soon, but they are 1972 date stamped.

 

 

Not in a rush so just posting this in case anyone has a set laying around and decides to dispose of them and hopefully thinks of me first!

 

Will also consider other years also as I may get them made wider.

Do you know if the D-piece in the middle is removable? I ask because I've seen a few in Japan obviously without the D piece and I wasn't sure if you can easily fit the D piece to them (as in it being detachable?).

I agree the TOPY wheel weight is going to be an issue, but supply is thin on the ground here at the moment. I think they all got turfed.

The 'D' emblem clips on with two prongs going through spring clips on the back. If you look closely in my photos I think it's possible to see in a couple of them.

 

Watch out for Japanese market hubcaps, which are different. It's not just the emblems.

Thanks Alan, I nearly took a punt on a couple of those Japanese market caps. Glad I didn't, I had assumed I could attached the emblems to them. Which appears to be wrong.

Is your reason for wanting the 1970 , 4 1/2 inch wide wheels,  to have a very early car in original condition?

Yes I want to keep my cars as original and together as possible. Although I will be pragmatic where necessary. So if I can't find 1970 date stamped wheels it isn't the end of the world but would like them if they are available. I have got a set of 72 stamped wheels in the US, just need to ship them.

 

I probably won't drive around with the hubcaps on, just have the steel wheels and when at a shown and shine I'll fit the caps. I also like the blank steel wheel look as that's what many people did when racing them in the early days (just removed the caps and went racing). My first 73 240z had the steel wheels/caps and I always regretted swapping them out for 260z alloys.

 

I sometimes see old Japanese cars like Corolla's, Rx2, Rx3's etc.. around my area in the sunny weather and I always like it when they have the steel wheels, original paint hues and rear venetian blinds happening . As oppose to the big modern wheels and workshop stickers and candy paint jobs.

 

As an FYI It's looking like I'll use an L24 block and retain the E31 head on HS30 00150 at this stage also. It's a shame the original L24 block went for a walk, but I might see if I can find a low # L24 block to replace it.

I assume you will be looking for 4.5J wheels Gav, and not 5J, if I am not mistaken the '72 ones you have found are likely to be 5J and not 4.5J. The 4.5J are also found on earlier Roadsters and may predate the '70 timestamp you are after.

 

But in having chased these myself for some time, I would say that any 4.5J wheel you can find will suffice and then worry about putting a set together, as either way they are becoming as rare as rocking horse poop...

 

I picked up a set of 4.5J '68 recently with the help of Scoota in Ballarat.

 

Ill keep my ear to the ground, but unfortunately I think they will inevitably be hard to find...

Someone found a pair of 4.5j ones off a roadster recently his name was Sash. They were date stamped 68.

Who knows... I only dealt with Mark... the ones on my car are a collection of bits and pieces... 1 came with the car, 2 from Stewart Wilkins, 1 from BenZed in Melb... and one from a mate... you get the idea... LOL

I sold a set f 4.5" ones to a guy in Vic, after them for his old school race car. $25 each.

 

The Roadster steel rims, same as the Z, but they should have three spot welded on lugs that hold the smaller diam hubcap on.

Nissan deleted the lugs, kept the Roadster rim, and fitted a full cover hubcap for the Z

Just an update actually I bought the set of 6 hubcaps off Alan, very happy to get those. So only looking for the Steelies now. Although absolutely no rush.

Hi Alan,

 

I could be interested in that as a spare wheel as I think mine was replaced in HS30 00150 with a hotwire mag and it doesn't sit flat in the boot like the Topy would.

Hey Mick,

Do you still want this? Turns out that it is a TOPY steel wheel but it's not the S30z style.

 

S30z style looks like this:

 

The wheel I got off Alan is a 14Jx5 4 stud TOPY allow but has circular spokes in this style. (not photo of actual wheel - just an example).

 

If you still want it as a spare wheel let me know? I don't want much for it..

I don't know the offset, I could try to measure it but have a lack of good straight edges so it would be a rough estimate.

 

I am back in Sydney now yes, looks like I'll be taking Friday off work. Not sure where i'll be Saturday yet (sister is visiting this weekend from overseas) but feel free to PM me and we can figure it out.
