zeds4ever Posted October 10, 2015 Posted October 10, 2015 Came across this in (my105.com.au) . Datsun 260Z Rally set up car. The following day was at my Z parts man Carlos place to get some parts I needed , mentioned to him about the rally car he had for sale. He gave me an inspection of it & it turns out that it is a 280Z . It has been fitted out with a great roll cage set up , has a 280Z motor & a 4.7 slippery diff?. The car is well presented body & paint wise with just a couple of minor rust bubbles showing which can be easily fixed. Only thing that went against it was a small air vent sent up in the turret which can also be easily fixed. Color is a Bright red . Might be worth you having a look at Dat2kman to join your stable. Dont think to many things would get near it in its class with your experienced tweeking , etc. Regards: Alan. Quote
dat2kman Posted October 10, 2015 Posted October 10, 2015 I'm selling all my Datsun toys, basically, as I cant se them anymore, no point having them! Carls has had that car for sale for some time, its had plenty use, but gets looked after very well! I knew Carlos from my Sydney Datsun Club days back in early 1980's! For someone looking for a cometent well buiot all rounder for tarmac, sprints etc that would make a good car. For someone looking to go door to door racing, tarmac rallying, Aust Champ Hillclimbing, Historic racing, International Historics ( Goodwood or Laguna Seca type stuff) then my blue Group S lgbooked car would be the far better option. $43,000 get a hell f o lot f well developed 28OZ Even hold lap recrds in Historics classes at all three Qld tracks, and, is one of THE top 3 fastest Group S Zeds in the country. zeds4ever Posted October 10, 2015 Author Posted October 10, 2015 Nothing like a 280ZX except for motor displacement. It is definately a 280Z but for some unknown reason it has a 260Z badge on it. Carlos seems to think that the wrong badge was put on it in error originally !. Alan. Quote
260DET Posted October 10, 2015 Posted October 10, 2015 Aaaah, because he did have a red 280ZX shorty for sale a while back. Quote
EJ101 Posted October 12, 2015 Posted October 12, 2015 if you're talking about that Orange/Red 280ZX 2 seater he had for sale, that was my car until I sold it to him in 2002. It was originally white. I bought it in 1995. Carlos had been rallying a 2+2 for a while until it was damaged in a crash. He'd been after a 2 seater hardtop for a while but couldn't find one. He had one or two left hand drive targa tops but they were no good for rallying and gladly bought mine when it came up. It was a great car, I miss it badly but by 2002 reluctantly I could see having a well modified zed as a daily driver was getting expensive. In stock form I'd get about 15 litres/100km around town. In 98 the engine was rebuilt with big cam, head work, AU XR6 65mm throttlebody, AU XR6 coilpacks. EMS ECU, larger injectors etc etc it produced about 240bhp and never missed a beat in about 3 years as a daily driver and returned about 16-17 litres/100km so it was getting too expensive. Unfortunately I couldn't afford nor had the room to keep 2 cars, so it went. Carlos did much work to turn it into a rally car, but the engine only had minor changes. A Haltech ECU and a different cam. I believe he only did one or two rallies in it before putting it up for sale. I never really understood why he wanted to rally one seeing that his stable was full of more modern AWD turbos. Sorry to hijack the thread!! Quote
dat2kman Posted October 12, 2015 Posted October 12, 2015 Nt at all! Nice to know the history on t! It certainly has not had a lot of se, and would be well suited as a Tarmac rally car! Quote

Sounds like a good car, Carlos wanted $20,000 when I saw it for sale, perhaps he found that a short wheelbase car was not ideal for rallying. Quote
Cozza Posted October 12, 2015 Posted October 12, 2015 I notice it has power steering, anyone know if it would it be a rack or box type steering? Mick Quote

dat2kman Posted October 13, 2015 Posted October 13, 2015 I notice it has power steering, anyone know if it would it be a rack or box type steering? Mick Majority of ZX's were recrculating ball type steering, both 2 seat and 2+2The domestic Japan models in Fairlady ZX form were rack and pinion. The racks and crossmembers from the S30 bdy, will not swap into S130 bdy, and vce versa! Quote
EJ101 Posted October 13, 2015 Posted October 13, 2015 Mine was a '79 JDM and had power recirculating ball. Was excellent, 2.7 turns lock to lock, just the right weighting and feel. Carlos did say the 2 seater was better than the 2+2 as a rally car.Lighter and more nimble and...........better than a 240/260Z!!!! Wheelbase is about the same, but the 280ZX had a wider track making it more stable and a much easier car to drive, plus the power steer helped. Quote
