As i'm building a Z-G replica I have some Z-G specific questions.

I would like to know what specific differences the Z-G came with, compared to Aus market 240Zs. Did they come with the speedo that had the yellow and red lines on it?

(I know the emblems say Fairlady 240Z)

Did they all come with the rear spoiler and was it the one with the two ribs in it?

Is the JDM AM radio different to the AUDM one?

When you fit the nose with flared guards, obviously the lower half of the nose sticks out under the flare. Do people trim this back corner off and did you reinforce it, since the is an angle at the back there that makes it stiffer.

Does any one have a pic of a genuine Z-G headlight cover mounted from the side and top. A close up would be good as there isn't a lot of room there.

Let me answer with being open to correction from the guru.

Yes I believe JDM cars were always in KM/H and therefore had the speedometer with the yellow /red markings to indicate you are approaching warp speed.

Did they all come with the rear spoiler and was it the one with the two ribs in it?

I'm pretty sure the 432-R rear spoiler was optional but many were fitted with it. The ribbed version was an 'early' feature that was removed by 71 when the 240ZG launched. So no it wouldn't have had it unless retrofitted later.

Is the JDM AM radio different to the AUDM one?

My understanding is yes, they didn't get the AM style radio our market got and the first year 240z's in the US received.

For the rest hopefully the 'guru' will chime in.

The radio seen in this video appears to be the Japanese Home Market version.

You've got all the 'normal' home market differences for the H-prefix models (specifically 'Deluxe' spec), with the fact that the ZG was a kind of 'Deluxe Plus' spec to address. Or not, as you don't have to address everything when making a replica.

Point is, there are so many small differences between Export HS30-prefixed cars and Domestic HS30-prefixed cars that it would be just about impossible to address them all. You don't need to though...

Did they all come with the rear spoiler and was it the one with the two ribs in it?

Adding to what Gav has already pointed out, rear spoilers were an extra cost showroom option on ALL models except the PS30-SB Fairlady Z432-R (on which it was standard equipment), so anyone who wanted one on an HS30-H model Fairlady 240ZG had to pay extra to have one. Many cars were sold without them, and then had them added later. The type contemporary with the 240ZG (launched Sept.'71) is the 'second' type factory rear spoiler, without the reinforcing ribs seen on the front face of the 432-R type spoiler. They still had the raised section on the right hand side of the rear face to carry the emblems.

Is the JDM AM radio different to the AUDM one?

There were several radios for the Japanese market at the time of the 240ZG, but the correct (stock) item for the 240ZG model is the Hitachi 8-track AM/FM unit.

When you fit the nose with flared guards, obviously the lower half of the nose sticks out under the flare. Do people trim this back corner off and did you reinforce it, since the is an angle at the back there that makes it stiffer.

Nothing was trimmed by the Factory. They left that (structurally important) return on the wheelarch section of the lower nose uncut and laid the overfender over the top to overlap. However, in service many people found that when they fitted wider wheels and tyres there was fouling on full lock. Many owners cut away that section to give space for wide wheels and tyres to turn (it was done on my GP Maroon ZG too). There's a small but thriving business replacing/repairing such modifications in Japan today. So it depends on ride height and wheel/tyre choice as to whether you need to cut/clearance or not.

Does any one have a pic of a genuine Z-G headlight cover mounted from the side and top. A close up would be good as there isn't a lot of room there.

What specifically is it that you want to see? I don't really have any photos like that on file (see below for possibly closest) but can tell you that the genuine headlamp covers pretty much only fit in one place on the 'scoop', and they kind of find their own centre when they are evenly placed all the way around - if that's what your concern is?

Thanks Gav & Alan.

Alan you have answered all my questions with the intentions with which they were asked.

I'm running 9.5J Watanabes on the front so I think i will have to trim it and yes it looked structurally important to me too haha.

The headlight cover images are exactly what I wanted. I just like having good references after miss-reading your fender mirror diagram. I have the reproduction covers I got from Yahoo Auctions jp and when you don't have any marks to go off there is definitely a bit of room to move it. I've found i need to exert sideward pressure on the cover for the seal on the bottom of the perspex to sit flush on the body.

Out of interest these are the main visual differences i have seen on JDM cars:

Hazard switch

Side markers (no rear ones on PS30 models)

KPH speedo

Datsun emblems replaced with Fairlady Z or just Z

Kick plate covers

Stereo as mentioned above

3 piece seatbelt (maybe only on the early cars)

Fender mirrors

S30 bumpers, rubbers strips were an option

No over-riders on the bumpers

Amber indicators on the lower valance

Sidemarker switches in the centre console

A lot of them don't seem to have a choke light?

Roadside flare mounted in the interior

Willingness to be possessed by evil spirit/devil for highway racing purposes.

You do realise that it's about - um - w*nking, right...?  :o

Try to relax a bit more!

Lol you have it bad, I'd be more likely to play

260DET likes good music shock.

I like early Todd. Especially his first band:

That's OK, that's normal. Don't worry about it. You might have to give them a bit of a push to get them to sit right and get the holes for the mounts in the right place, but they do - in my experience - kind of find their own way to being right with a little gentle persuasion.

Out of interest these are the main visual differences i have seen on JDM cars:

Hazard switch Quite a few other differences in switchgear too, depending on model and month/year.

Side markers (no rear ones on PS30 models) No rear markers on any Japanese market models.

KPH speedo. Yes, and differences in month/year versions.

Datsun emblems replaced with Fairlady Z or just Z. Remember that L24-engined models (like the 240ZG) had two piece 'Fairlady 240Z' emblems.

Kick plate covers Yes, the stainless sill plate trims were plain - non-branded - on Japanese market models.

Stereo as mentioned above Several different Japanese market radio/tape units, depending on model/month/year.

3 piece seatbelt (maybe only on the early cars). Both my 240ZGs have the 3-piece seatbelts with letter 'Z' on the buckles. Earlier cars (like my 1970 Fairlady Z-L) had the plain black buckles, but the belts were still 3-piece.

Fender mirrors. With different design and positioning on late model cars. Complicated subject!

S30 bumpers, rubbers strips were an option Yes, all 'Standard' (no frills) models from 69 to 73 had plain chrome bumpers (ie S30-S, HS30-S & PS30-SB) but rubber trims present on all other 'Deluxe' models. Fairlady 240ZG had painted rear bumper with extra 'filler' rubber strip in the middle.

No over-riders on the bumpers Although available as an extra-cost showroom option at time of purchase.

Amber indicators on the lower valance Yes, but two colour (amber & clear) division on later models.

Sidemarker switches in the centre console. Yes, the double rocker 'Parking Light' switch.

A lot of them don't seem to have a choke light? No choke light on early cars.

Roadside flare mounted in the interior Originally it was a double-ended signal torch with a red lense on one end. Flares came later, with a double (torch and flare) mounting bracket arrangement.

Willingness to be possessed by evil spirit/devil for highway racing purposes. Only the blue ones, apparently...

^My comments above in red, which hopefully won't look too rude.

Best points of reference are the Japanese market factory parts lists. They help you to differentiate between the parts fitted to different spec cars. You can spot a lot in there by comparing with the Export parts lists too.

There are lots of extra little differences on the 240ZG that people don't generally notice. Stuff like the different bonnet prop rod, the different front tow hook, the front number plate holder, etc etc.

Haha I'm glad someone else said it....

Shocking realisations afoot! My housemate explained the song to me.  :o  Still a strangely apt song, I think the car looks pretty good.

I turn the song up twice as loud when i'm working on my FD RX-7 beside the zed  :o ::)  haha. (Wankel engine get it?)

Alan, the pushing on the headlight covers was only discovered after i drilled some holes. I have decided to mount the covers with Well Nuts for extra security at high speed, nicer mounting hardware with counter-sunk machine screws and the chance to move the holes over a little on the top side. And i did make a comment about the Z-L emblems in my original post.

Did i miss anything in that list?

Did i miss anything in that list?

There's what seem like hundreds of both major and minor differences - rolling along with model variant/month/year changes and updates - so it would be an almost impossible task to list them all without writing out something that looks akin to a factory parts list. My points of reference are usually the Nissan 'Service Shuho' booklets (there's ten of them for the Japanese market S30-series Z range), the aforementioned factory parts lists (which miss a few parts out...!) and stuff like the engine manuals, workshop manuals and factory competition prep booklets.

There are a few tell-tale features on early-ish Japanese market cars (my personal focus of interest tends to be '69 to end of '73-ish, and the later cars become even more accessorised and complicated) such as the extra front seat brackets and multiple extra fastenings/brackets, as well as stuff that often tends to have disappeared - like the original, flatter/less-dished, Japanese market steering wheels and early horn pushes.

It's a huge topic once you start getting in deeper. The only way I can deal with it is to focus in on the models and details that I'm most interested in.

That's fair enough and i agree '69-'73 is my interest too and I was only specifically referring to 240ZG model so that narrows it down to '71 - '73.

400. Of which only 1,298 are left.

;)

Sounds like the Phase III GTHO Falcon's only meant to have made 1,557, now there only 3000 left.

thats very deep. 400 but left 1298???.....  :o :o

Someone replica it??

D3coy are you putting mikunis carb? Is it possible to fit the original SU air filter box into the triple carb like in the picture?

I have triple 50mm webers. Originally 240ZGs had L24 engines with twin SUs not the S20 pictured. Also that isn't an SU airbox it is a special 432 airbox for triple 40mm solexs.
