INTRODUCTION: 2 X 240Z DILEMMAS

Hi

 

I'm new to Australia and living in Canberra after immigrating from South Africa earlier this year.  I have been on the lookout for a clean 240Z for some time now and have ended up with two in the space of three weeks 

 

The first car was bought here in Oz, and is an early 1971 car with two owners.  All is original and in remarkable good condition.  She is yellow and the interior is mint (save for 1 crack in the dash).  The back end of the car was touched up some time ago and wasn't a great job, so I got a quote today to redo the roof, c pillars and tail.  I have imported a full rubber set including all the grommets etc for the car.

 

Just after I bought this car, a car that I have been chasing in Zimbabwe for many years, came up.  Its a 1974 model with a genuine 43,000km on the clock!  The 2nd owner bought it in the UK in 1975 after it had already had a colour change from white to blue .  Who does a colour change on a new car???.  Anyway, I'm finalising the paperwork, sending it to a bodyshop I've used in South Africa before to take it back to white and do a nut and bolt before I bring it here to Oz.

 

I also have a 1974 BMW 2002tii Alpina, 1974 Lotus Elan +2s (130/5) [both cars on the water at present] and a Volvo P1800 Jensen in Canberra, so I have too many cars........

 

Anyway, probably going to clean up the 1971 yellow car in the next few weeks and put her back on the market.  I see the prices are all over the place in Oz at the moment with cars being advertised for as much as $66,000!  Any comments on the values of 240Z's here?

With regards to the yellow car, I assume you are getting it throughly checked for rust before applying fresh paint ?

 

There are a couple of forum members in Canberra so you shoud be able to find local support if needed.

Thanks.  Checked the car thoroughly and there are no signs of rust.  Due to the "new" paint having reacted with the old paint, we are going to take that section down to bare metal.

Welcome, from South Africa? What brings you to Oz? I lived in South Africa for about 3 months and loved it. I didn't see any Datsun 240z's though. Just a 1600 in Cape Town and a 140z at the air port.

 

The 71 240z sounds like a really nice car, would need to see photos to help give you an accurate figure of what it could be worth. Values are currently all over the place in part due to limited supply and massive variance in quality of cars available for sale.

 

When you say yellow, what colour yellow? It's not Safari Gold is it? 920?

 

I can't imagine too many Classic cars floating about in Zimbabwe at the minute. My sister currently lives in Botswana and when I visit her I often see some old Datsun utes about and in use, but never anything less agricultural like an S30z.

Yeah, its 100% original BMW and Alpina, no aftermarket parts at all.  Been featured in BMWCar UK magazine as well as two South African Magazines.

Gav240Z, not sure what the paint colour code is, but just loaded a photo of the car in my Garage as my Avatar.  Funny enough, same colour as the Wheeler Dealer episode that I have now watched about three times on Foxtel.

Looks closest to 112 Yellow? Although I would call it Lime myself.

In the flesh, and judging by the sample colours you sent me the link to, looks more like 919 Yellow to me.

 

920 Gold looks like a really awesome colour, may consider it for my '74 instead of going back to white.

919 Yellow is quite rare to see these days. It's a good colour.

 

RE: 920 Gold - You'll go far around here haha. It's a personal favorite of mine. Who else would create an entire album based on a colour?

Im in Banks.  Planning to start a Classic Car business here doing storage, restorations and buy/sell, plus introduce some agencies to Canberra.  Car covers, C-Tek, Autoglym etc....

 

Looking at a few warehouses in Fyshwick today.

Classicman, you are calling your ex-UK, ex-Zimbabwe car - 'HS30-103361' - a 1974 build date. This is impossible. No 'HS30' prefixed cars were built in 1974.

 

If it's an original UK market car the previous owner was probably dating it via the suffix letter on its first UK registration plates (yearly updated UK plate suffixes straddled two calendar years because they used end of August/start of September for the changeover) and it allowed him to pretend that the car was a year younger than it really was. And he probably had it resprayed from white to blue because he didn't get the colour he originally wanted. There are many tales in the UK of it being pot luck at the time as to what colours actually turned up on the boat. A 240Z sold just before the 260Z was introduced was very likely to have sold quite slowly too, so maybe he did a deal on it despite it not being his first colour choice?

 

'HS30-103361' was built in 1973, and certainly before the end of September. There are little dating clues all over the car in the quality control stamps on the individual components if you want to pin it down more accurately.

My 240Z is HS30-103724 (engine number 189707) and has an Australian compliance plate dated 9/73.
