Hi guys,

I've noticed in my engine bay there is at least 5 relays and a bunch of wiring compared to many photos I've seen on the internet. Is this what the factory wiring looks like and the photos I've seen are of cars which has had there wiring cleaned up or has the previous owner added some extra electronics to the car  ?

They look completely non-standard to me. Looks like they go to the firewall and under the dash? Where do they go?

I thought so. No idea what they are connected to Gav. Haven't had the time to have a good look around. I suspect they might have something to do with the after market equalizer and radio the previous owner has attached under the dash next to the bonnet latch. That may explain for 2 relays but not the other 3.  :o

I'm guessing maybe air con, immobilizer / alarm?

By the way I love the duct tape on the fender.

no z wiring expert but it looks like the previous owner has 'updated' the fusible link wiring maybe and added new relays for headlights, taillights and maybe an aftermarket radio.. maybe they blew up the older ones and had to replace?

Any sign of the car ever having had driving lights or airhorns ?

Good points gents. The car does have what seems to be fog lights beneath the grille.

The wiring looks really messy. I might relocate it under the dash.

Hi

Does the car have an Electric Fan /thermostat switch mounted to radiator  and also air horns as my had those initially installed by PO

That is where the fuseable links are for the 260Z. Low Number 1974 260Z is it possible they used the 240Z loom? The engine bay configuration is also 240Z. I would ditch the lot and find a 260Z Engine bay loom with bracket and fuseable links. Perhaps the car had a fire earlier in it's life.

Do you know if the 260 engine loom connects straight up to the under dash loom Mark?

Doubt it, for a start all the connectors are different. Is there any issue with the current wiring? Or do you just want to clean it up and remove failure points? Perhaps draw up a diagram for future reference and try removing it after taking lots of photos / writing stuff down?

Just want to tidy it up really. I think the previous owner fixed it there for easy access of the fuses and relays. I'll most probably tuck it all under the dash.

Coming back to this, I believe it's a 74 240z no? I also think they may share the same sort of wiring loom as a 240z since they still have the AMP gauge as opposed to the voltage gauge and therefore would have the shunt in the engine bay etc..

I would try disconnecting each of those relays 1 by 1 and see if it stops anything working? Like brake lights, indicators, radio, fans etc.. You may find it's all redundant by now?

Just happen to be taking the dash out of the 260Z today. I'll take a picture. Yours is a 260Z, correct?

You will find that it is pretty congested under the dash

Also looking a your photo where the relays are near the strut tower there should be an original cover bracket that goes over the original relays that where there (ie v/regulator,aircon and mounting of the fuselink system),if your regulator was been removed your alternator has probably been upgraded making the reg redundant

I think they might be relays fitted for headlights; just grab a test light and find connector marked with the 87 and with the test light probe on that, switch the headlights on and if the test light comes on, that's what it must be for.

After all these years zeds wiring looms tend to get butchered after many owners / mechanics try to fix issues. Takes a while changing it back to stock.
