theremm Posted March 21, 2015 Posted March 21, 2015 Hi all, hoping to either buy or borrow from a very kind member (hint: this could be you!) a pair of lifting brackets to lift my L24 and gearbox out of the car I have an engine crane but am missing the brackets on the motor to attach the crane too. I would prefer to use the real things as opposed to just throwing chain etc around the motor. Quote
George Posted March 21, 2015 Posted March 21, 2015 You don't really need them. Just throw in a couple of long bolts on alternating ends at the top of the block and loop some decent rope around them. Quote
theremm Posted March 21, 2015 Author Posted March 21, 2015 The thread size is only like 8mm where the brackets are meant to go - is this where you are talking about fastening the rope to? Little skeptical to lift box and tranny from only those 2 small bolts :S Quote
peter t Posted March 21, 2015 Posted March 21, 2015 A few bolts will do it all the time. That's how I do it. Quote
Retro Z Posted March 21, 2015 Posted March 21, 2015 Just put a bolt and big washer through the end of each side of the chain. Its how ive done it dozens of times before, no problems. I use to also use old seatbelts that ive cut up instead if chain/rope. Quote
gilltech Posted March 21, 2015 Posted March 21, 2015 If you're pulling the engine & gearbox out as one unit then a load leveler is handy, then it's a one-man job. Hare & Forbes stock them, not expensive. Quote
Riceburner Posted March 21, 2015 Posted March 21, 2015 I've always used the factory lifting brackets which are attached to the rear 8mm exhaust stud and two vertical 8mm holes near the factory fuel pump on the front of the head. Is that where other posters are lifting from? I'd go for the factory brackets, but if your going redneck style use those points with CHAIN. Use washers to keep that chain as close to the head as possible. Leverage on 8mm studs IMHO is not a good idea, especially with the gearbox attached and the manipulation required to get things out. As soon as you tilt it to clear the radiator support a lot of the weight will shift to that rear stud It's still quite easy to separate the box/engine and refit in the car. If your keen I could post up my brackets, I'd need them returned when you finish though. Quote
chris240 Posted March 21, 2015 Posted March 21, 2015 Im 100% with Gareth... 8mm bolts fully loaded at a 90deg angle...not for me. Quote
theremm Posted March 22, 2015 Author Posted March 22, 2015 Hey everyone, thanks for your response May have sorted a pair locally from a friend up here, waiting to hear back tomorrow otherwise would appreciate if I could borrow yours Gareth. Will let you know how it goes Quote
gilltech Posted March 22, 2015 Posted March 22, 2015 For surety & safety I double up at the rear with the chain hooked to several studs using large washers due to the tilt required with the gearbox still attached, as others here have pointed out. If you're unsure of the quality of the studs then use some high tensile bolts while you do the lifting. Quote
Moderators Zedman240® Posted March 24, 2015 Moderators Posted March 24, 2015 Any local "pick yourself" wrecker would have plenty of cars with lifting hooks that you can get. Doesn't have to be L series specific. Quote
theremm Posted March 30, 2015 Author Posted March 30, 2015 Update.. sorry I realised I had forgotten to reply to this post. Decided against removing the engine all together as the list kept growing in terms of things I wanted to do with the motor out. Just pulled the gearbox instead. Thanks again all Quote
