Hoi hoi,

Merry Christmas.

Does anyone know what the stuff is that's used underneath cars to seal between joins (from floor panels to the subframe, for example)?

I've seen it on newer cars, it seems to be white and applied with a gun (like silicone).

I want to seal up some spots under my Z car where water is likely to enter and rust. I also wanted to use it on the inside of the door skins, to bond them to the reinforcing bar, as the original stuff has let go and the skins flex and rattle.

Cheers!

The white stuff that you are talking about is called "drip check". You can buy it at most auto stores.

Never head of it. Not a US term is it?

The stuff I've always used is called 'Sikaflex' (in a black tube).

It's paintable & also comes in other colours, but the white is easier to use.

I have never really looked at where it is made, it could possibly be a US product. I started panel beating in 1976, it was used in the panel shops back then & it is still used today. It is the same sort of jointing compound that is used by car manufacturers. It is usually sold in a toothpaste size tube at auto stores. It is a lovely sweet smelling product & comes in a checkered box.  It has a similar consistancy to any other sealer & cleans up with 'prepsol' (wax & grease remover).

Cheers

Being in the commercial building industry I  can vouch 100% for Sikaflex.

The company I work for used sikaflex on highly exposed external wall joins in 1989 , and as of last thursday (doing work on the same office bld) the sikaflex was still in amazing condition.

It comes in black or grey and is caulked on.

wouldnt hurt to double check with a panel beater for a 2nd opinion , but Im convinced.

sikaflex also comes in white. I've used it, good stuff it can peel off your paint if you use it for external bits and ever try and pull them off ie badges. Very strong

problem is there is about 30 different sikaflex products the stuff you need is seam sealer which sikaflex do but its getting the right one just go to a body supplier and they will put you in the right direction most other products dry hard and thats not what you want you can also get a gun that can spray a cartridge like in the boots of most new cars  ;)
