Azman1984 Posted July 26, 2014 Posted July 26, 2014 Hey guys! I'm on the hunt! Tax money has landed and I'm on the hunt for a project for myself and my sons to do. Would prefer a complete car and more than happy to deal with rust and panel work providing it's not dreadfully bad or even happy with a rolling shell. Any help in hunting something down would be awesome. Cheers Aaron Quote
DreamZproject Posted July 26, 2014 Posted July 26, 2014 http://www.viczcar.com/forum/index.php/topic,13677.0.html This plus a rust bucket with all the parts would be the best way to go long term. I started with a car which I thought had no rust, now I'd be lucky to come in under 20k even with doing 10k's worth of rust repair myself! Quote

Thanks Dream, I had seen this and it's one I am going to look at, just need to find a donor car for parts if I do. As for budget, trying to keep it as cheap as possible, I'm a qualified mechanic and can do most rust repairs comfortably myself so I don't mind doing the hard yards. I can probably goto around $4-5K Quote
DreamZproject Posted July 26, 2014 Posted July 26, 2014 Don't mean to be negative... but for a Z, thats super low. If you already had all of the equipment to do EVERY step, then it might come together within a year for 5k. There are just so many things on a Z that need replacing (or really any car of this age, but especially Z's) I mean, have you thought about something as simple as weather seals? 90% of old ones are screwed, and a full replacement set is $700. Something very basic and often overlooked, but very crucial! and this train of thought will apply to more than half a dozen parts where it's borderline... I guess for that amount you're better off buying a near complete project or a project that isn't sought after (like an engine swap or a horrible colour) but you will be waiting around quite a while... I hope this helps more than it puts you off. My project started off at around 10k with a good estimation. Fiberglassed over rust blew that out to way over 20k and more than 3 years in the making and counting. Quote
Azman1984 Posted July 26, 2014 Author Posted July 26, 2014 Haha sorry my fault I should have clarified that a bit better. That's just my budget for buying the initial car, beyond that for the project itself I haven't set a budget. Quote
DreamZproject Posted July 26, 2014 Posted July 26, 2014 Oooooooohhhhhhh, or that makes more sense. With z's unless you are going for a brand spankn perfect car it's best to consider the total cost. Because more than often the work required on them will outstrip the initial cost. Especially in the lower price bracket. Quote
Azman1984 Posted July 27, 2014 Author Posted July 27, 2014 Yeah I have owned a few Zed's in the past so have a fair idea on how quickly the price can climb, thankfully being able to do a great majority of the work myself and having a friend or two who owe me some decent favours should keep the cost down. Although this time around I'm not all that fussed on overall cost. I am happy to spend whatever I need in order to make it what I want it to be. As always I'll try start with the best base possible. DreamZproject Posted July 27, 2014 Posted July 27, 2014 Lol, ok I see now. i just thought you were some new guy that wanted a Z for peanuts Quote
chris240 Posted July 27, 2014 Posted July 27, 2014 If youve got a budget to buy then a secondary budget for works, then why not just combine and get the cleanest car your combined budget allows.. My 5 cents. Quote
garvice Posted July 27, 2014 Posted July 27, 2014 I think you guys need to read the original post. He want's a project for him and his sons. I get the feeling the journey is more important than the budget, hence why the budget will get spread out. Quote
garvice Posted July 27, 2014 Posted July 27, 2014 When I first saw your add Azman, i thought of my car which has been sitting in the shed untouched in a good 3 years. I contemplated selling it for a few moments (hence asking what price you were looking), don't think I could though. Quote

I know that agonising feeling, I took me months before I finally decided to sell my last Zed. Yeah this project is more about the journey than the cost, plus the 4-5K is what I have on hand now the rest will come when it does. Quote

Azman1984 Posted August 3, 2014 Author Posted August 3, 2014 Interior needs to be completely redone, good respray, little rust around the hatch and that's all I can see so far. Will post some pics when I get a chance later tonight Quote
Moderators PB260Z Posted August 3, 2014 Moderators Posted August 3, 2014 little rust Isn't there always ? Quote
Azman1984 Posted August 3, 2014 Author Posted August 3, 2014 Isn't there always ? Haha yes but thankfully so far a lot less than most of it's age. No rust around the battery or above, no rust around fuel flap, no rust in the floor that I can see, has no carpet in it currently, rails look decent, 2 rust holes on the inside of the hatch and some in the hatch slam panel is all I have found so far.
