Riceburner Posted June 8, 2014 Posted June 8, 2014 Hey guys, does anyone know the rough price to sandblast a a body shell, including doors, boot etc. Cheers, Gareth. Quote
dat240z Posted June 8, 2014 Posted June 8, 2014 Hi mate, I got 2 doors, my bonnet, valances, cowl, front bumper, sugar scoops and grille done for $450. Came up well Quote
Ledge Posted June 8, 2014 Posted June 8, 2014 When I get stuff done I get sand inside, underneath and engine bay. Then Soda on all external surfaces. This costs more but it is a better finish. Z is around 1500. Depending on amount of paint that needs to come off. cheers Quote

Brabham Posted June 8, 2014 Posted June 8, 2014 Why do you use soda on the external surfaces Paul? Is it to avoid warpage? Quote
Ledge Posted June 8, 2014 Posted June 8, 2014 A decent operator shouldn't stuff a panel up no matter what the media is. We use Soda on the external surface as the finish is like smooth steel from the factory. This means we don't go through 20 files whilst metal finishing the panels. cheers Quote
KatoKid Posted June 8, 2014 Posted June 8, 2014 This is the classic case of you get what you pay for......my shell only was 1600 but I was stoked with the attention to detail and the quality...and nothing was damaged. Ask around for recommendations and go with that , price should be secondary. Quote
HKSZ Posted June 8, 2014 Posted June 8, 2014 Going rate is $250 an hour for garnet, had mine done at DAF mordialloc last year, that would be my recommendation if he's still operating. Quote
Riceburner Posted June 8, 2014 Author Posted June 8, 2014 Thanks guys. It's for a 71 Datsun 1600, the shell was rubbed back to bare metal 10+yrs ago and left in a barn. Apart from the surface rust it appears rust free. The Doors, boot, bonnet are all still painted, but rust free from looking inside and out. Car is up Ballarat way, very happy to travel most places for a good job. Was just trying to estimate figures before making an offer. Do these places also do undercoating or etch priming of the blasted body? Recommendations welcome Quote
mossy Posted June 8, 2014 Posted June 8, 2014 Some do Gareth, I didn't do that myself as you'd probably just be painting over bits of garnet that's still in the car. I got my z home got as much of the garnet out as possible and hand rubbed the whole car back before etching, time consuming but at least I know it was clean before paint. Quote
Riceburner Posted June 8, 2014 Author Posted June 8, 2014 Excellent tip Mossy. Who did you use, you happy with the result? Quote
mossy Posted June 8, 2014 Posted June 8, 2014 For my current z rob at the z factory used a guy around the corner from him in mordy, happy with his work and for the v8 zed i had a few years ago I used blast off in heidleberg, they were very good also. Quote

That's the guy Rob uses in Mordialloc. He raced zeds back in the day. He sold his race car to Gordon Dobie so he knows about zeds which is a bonus. Quote
