Shroud for eBay radiator

I have just installed my eBay radiator and twin 10" thermo fan setup and my friend has pointed out that the zip chord style mounts will eventually destroy the radiator from vibrations etc.

 

 

Does anyone know of a good place to get a generic alloy shroud for twin 10" fans i can adapt to this radiator?

 

 

Fwiw the fans are super quite and keep the engine cool perfectly while the car isn't moving and the whole set up was around $300.

sound like he mounted the fans with cable ties... most peope do it that way or put a small(m3ish) bolt through. There are some universal shrouds on ebay.

It's just a chord that looks like a zip tie that pushed through the core like benny said, except instead of looping back through i just pushes through a plug on the other side.

 

 

I saw the twin fans with the shroud in the US for $160 delivered but I didn't want another pair of fans really!

you could just make one with a sheet of aluminium or do something like i did on my 240 project-

TBH i never drove it so i cannot say though using right angle instead should fix the flexing issue. In saying all that i used counter sunk bolts as to not damage the radiator incase this happened.

Zip cords work fine. Had it done like that on a few of my cars and no damage.  Thermo fans are of very light weight construction.

Haha thanks mate! I finally got to drive it but i couldn't get full throttle so technically the beast still hasn't been unleashed!!

 

So we are all in agreeance that this is ok for the long term? I guess just keep an eye on it. I was more worried about the vibrations slowly rubbing through the aluminium tubes and slowly squashing the fins down.

 

I'll go take some pics for kicks and put them up!

OK so after inspection on had 1/4 throttle on the test drive... oh man this thing is going to be an ANIMAL!

 

found a photo of the installation too, have a look at the corner of the fans. The chord goes through the fins and has a flat clip with a hole in the middle that zips up against the other side.

Mine has a single 12" thermo mounted in the same way as your fans have been mounted and there is no sign of damage on the radiator whatsoever.

 

If I had some time and patience I would fab up an ally shroud for them as it would significantly improve their cooling efficiency.

Those fans have their own shrouds incorporated into the mounts so unless you remove the fans and make your own complete shroud that holds the fans and bolts to the radiator, I wouldn't bother. I have two small 8" fans and have no heating issues...looks similar to your setup.

Now with the pic, I understand. Have seen that method used many times, no probs.

Also, suck through set up works better than blow through.

Only better way would be like Gareth's set up.

They are twin 10" and cool the L34 no worries and you cant even hear them from in the car. They seem to have a nice low amp draw too. On my old 260Z i tried a single straight blade Davis-Craig 12" and it wasn't as good as these two.

 

 

The fans came separate to the radiator so pulling them off is no problem, an alloy shroud was what i was referring to.

 

 

I just looked through Gareth's whole thread, but i could see any sort of decent picture of the cooling setup.

Jake, jumping in on the end here,,, but,,

Do the two individual fans have a circumfrential ring around them on the blade tips, or, mounted in a cage with a ring?

If so, the ring will stop airflow generated by rotation from "spilling" off. They should work.

 

One other thing, the "cage" structure bit that is fixed ( not rotating) i cut every second bit of rib off to help exit airflow, use sidecutters.

 

Those pull through straight zip tie things have me a bit worried too, but after quite a few years in race use, not had any wear under the rubber pad i used, ( bit of bicycle inner tube rubber)

I'm not worried about airflow at all the cooling system appears to work great so far. It was entirely from a vibration/chaffing on the tubes point of view with the zip chords. I reckon that will be the shot!

My shroud came with the rad, but with fans fitted it was VERY close to the water pump. I ended up reversing it to give enough clearance, sits about 10mm from the rad fins. It's just alum sheet with a 10mm fold on all sides, the vertical sides have an extra fold to allow it to attach to the rad.

 

Benny's idea would be virtually the same, use some flat sheet with angle attached. Also, you could get a piece of flat sheet bent up at a sheetmetal business.

 

The rads are great for the money, I ran my car on the freeway and through heavy traffic in 36deg heat for two days in a row with no fans and the temp didn't go any more than two-three needle widths above half. I managed to undo the power wires without realising it

Yeah, at this point the shroud is looking like extra weight for no gain.
