Roberto Posted April 8, 2013 Posted April 8, 2013 Hi Guys, http://www.betamotorsports.com/benchracing/index.html If you click on this link and select "R200 Handling Issues", there is an article on the R200 and potential handling problems. Has anyone actually experienced this on a race track or street? I am on the hunt for an LSD..... Cheers Quote
d3c0y Posted April 8, 2013 Posted April 8, 2013 I have an R180 mechanical LSD out of an STi which 3.9 ratio I was going to run with the L34 until Pete talked me into 4.11 gearing. It should have no problem handling the power your motor puts out, all you need is some CV axles or Beta motorsport stubs. It's lighter, got a 4 disc clutch unlike old 2 clutch R200s (that are not nismo items) and is probably around 2 decades newer. Maybe a better option? Quote
DAT392 Posted April 8, 2013 Posted April 8, 2013 No handling issues at all.Have nearly 500hp and broken everything else but the diff touch wood, but mine came with an r200.I just changed it to a beefy LSD.corners or straight line it seems fine. Quote

Yeah, a couple of people I have spoken to with R200's haven't ever experienced these issues and no one has claimed to on here either. Will just forget about it. I have a 3.9 open now and it's not too bad because it's more of a torquey motor because of the cam we have used, but 4.1 or 4.3 would be better. 4.6 may be too much for a street car. Quote
d3c0y Posted April 9, 2013 Posted April 9, 2013 I think a 4.3 will be too much for a street car!! Don't you like driving on the highway or for any distance? How much time do you plan on spending at the track? I've drive a 4.1 on the road and if you plan on driving any distance on the highway like 100km - 200km a 4.3 will be shit. It will be noisey your engine will be revving really hard compared to stock and it will use loads of fuel. I don't like to go against PMC on anything really cause he's usually right, but I think a 4.3 will not be nice on the road at all. You will also not get a Subi diff in that ratio either. Quote
zzzzed Posted April 9, 2013 Posted April 9, 2013 My 4:3 is fine on the highway. But then I do have an rb Quote
Roberto Posted April 9, 2013 Author Posted April 9, 2013 Yeah, it's all a trade off. I agree 4.1 will be nicer on highways, but 4.3 better for performance. I will let availability determine which ratio I get. Quote
Cozza Posted April 9, 2013 Posted April 9, 2013 I can't comment on the R200 handling issue but, I've got the Subi 3.9 Torsen LSD using the Beta Motorsports stub axles and I am very happy with it. Good for Hway and OK for performance but if performance is your main concern I would be going for the 4.3. There's only a 10% difference in RPM so instead of doing 2500 on the Hway you are doing 2750. Meh As Jake said if you want the Subi diff, you are limited to your ratios. Maybe select your ratio that suits your local track the best? Quote
d3c0y Posted April 9, 2013 Posted April 9, 2013 I'm don't think that's quite right and i could be totally wrong here but... A mate had a 260Z that i helped build and it had a 4.11 R200 in it. It was doing (from memory and it was a while ago) 3400rpm at 110kph and could only just pull 200kph right at the top of 5th due to running out of revs. If a 4.3 was going to sit at 2750 on the highway i would have no qualms with running one at all. Cozza you sure your diff is a 3.9 and not a 3.5 out of a later model? Quote
luvemfast Posted April 9, 2013 Posted April 9, 2013 I have a 4.3 diff. 100kph is around 3,300rpm and 200kph is around 6,500rpm Quote
d3c0y Posted April 9, 2013 Posted April 9, 2013 Well i did put a disclaimer on my last post that i was probably wrong! Looks like that car might have had a 4.3 in it too considering the revs bang on match yours Simon. Quote
Agno Posted April 9, 2013 Posted April 9, 2013 http://www.osella.com.au/gear-ratios.htm Using a 4.375 final drive ratio (standard HR/Z31 LSD ratio), 0.864 5th gear and 606mm rolling diameter (225/50/R15 like my car) it says you would be doing approx 3330 RPM at 100kph Quote

Cozza you sure your diff is a 3.9 and not a 3.5 out of a later model? Yeah sorry I wasn't quoting rpm at a particular speed just pointing out the difference is only 10%. So if it was 3000 rpm with a 3.9 then you would be doing 3300 with a 4.3 which is not enough to worry about in my opinion if performance is what you are after. Will take her for a drive tomorrow and post rpm at 100kmh. Edit. In 5th I'm doing about 3050rpm at 100km/h with 205/50/16 tyres Quote
Ben Posted April 10, 2013 Posted April 10, 2013 I've got an HR31 4.375 in my DR30, and in retrospect I think that a 4.11 would have been better (the factory 3.90 feels a little tall for the FJ20ET). With an auto in the Z, a 3.70 would probably be the sweet spot (I've previously hit the limiter in top gear with the 3.90 without too much trouble at all, and that was with only 200rwhp...) When upgrading to an R200, proper length shafts are a very good idea. That usually means a CV conversion. Quote

Cheers I have a r200 diff in my 79 280zx, but swapped the centre for a kazz LSD unit, no pulling to either side and is rock solid with big horsepower and even bigger torque. Quote
