NSW folk - Advice obtaining a blue slip

Hey all,

 

With my car safely back in NSW, its time to try and get the car registered.

I've ordered some new number plates and as far as the car is concerned, everything seems to work fine eg. indicators, lights, wipers (although slow), brakes etc. the tyres have alot of tread but my only concern is the exhaust. it does sound abit loud on idle but funnily enough its quieter when on the move.

 

Should i wait for my plates to arrive before going out for inspection etc.?

If I can address the exhaust noise is there anything else that I should need before getting a blue slip?

 

Can anyone recommend a place ?

There's no reason to wait for your new plates - legally, you can't put them on the car if its not registered.

 

Personally, I'd just pick a blue slip place, take the car along for its inspection, then fix anything that is picked up and listed as needing repair by the inspection. You could try to pre-empt what they will find, but you could also end up fixing un-neccessary stuff that may have squeaked through by doing this.

get some chicken wire, a strip about 15-20cm wide and about half a meter or so long.

Lay it flat, put a mat of fibreglass or steel wool over it then roll it up as a short stumpy donut.

Unbolt a flange and insert it into the pipe, do the flange back up.

Instant diy silencer.

 

Your performance will suck and exhaust temps will go up pretty quick, so dont try to drive it hard.

once your exhaust test is done, remove it and go on with life.

 

I cant remember what the limit is, but the exhaust test is done at 3000?rpm with the dB meter at a 45 degree angle 1 meter away from the outlet.

If it goes over the limit at the measured rpm, OR when you back off, thats when it fails.

As was said by dave though, better to just present for inspection and deal with what comes up, rather than try to guess.

For all you know the mechanic will have a soft spot for old dattos and let a few things 'slip past'

its 96db and 50cm from the exhaust at a 45 angle, they changed the laws again. most places doing z blue slip wont even check the noise mine was at 100db+ and they passed it, as for your wipers pull of the front cowling and clean the motor and arms going to the motor with WD40

thanks for the advice, i'll just drive it to a place and see what happens next week

 

will have a look at cleaning the wiper motor too, im quote sure they are gunked up and just need a good clean

When I took my 240 for a blue slip, I gave it a good clean and did all the repairs that I thought made the car look like it was cared for but left some split front suspension bushes for the inspector to knock it back on. I think they like to find something to fault.

It failed on exhaust to noisy and wipers to slow but no comment on the bushes.

No comment on the L28 either. I thought I might have to get it certified due to the 15% Max oversize rule. Happy days.

I'm pretty sure you only have a week to get all the repairs done and reinspected or you pay for another inspection.

when i got my 260 the wipers didnt work I found the shafts were seized on both sides, (What the arm attaches to)  had a bugger of a time sorting them out, plenty of anti seize etc and patience they let go, work great now with new water seals and some lubricant.

your allowed 15% increase of the largest engine installed in the car and 25% increase in power, the L28e came out in a s30 chasis so no problem putting a L28 in it, there is even a bit of confusion if you can legally put a rb20/25det into a 280zx as they bolt in with factory mounting from a rb20det and the rta engine guidelines state as above 15% capacity increase and 25% power with no structural mods is allowed without a engineers cert.

just remember that older cars have  higher leeway in terms of the decibel  rating. as stated, roll up chicken wire and put it in the tail pipe, another thing would be make a insert for the flange, some plate with holes drilled into it.

 

Its a lot harder nowdays to have blue slip stations turn a eye, because i'm pretty sure they loose their license for 10 years and its a pretty big fine. I Think the RTA went around and revoked everyone's blue slip licenses and made it a lot more stringent to get one, so now only a handful of places do it. What area are you in?

I'm in the belmore area mate.

 

I started the car up and gave it a clean today and the exhaust isnt too loud, so it might just be under the limit. *fingers crossed*

 

everything else seems to be in working order, i'll rain-x my windshield to see if the wipers work a little quicker. otherwise that will just need a thorough cleanup.

I might just take it to a place and see what gets faulted but if anyone could recommend a place where hte guy isnt a total jerk that'd be great!

With the wipers, sometimes they just need a good grease where the rod comes through the body where the wiper bolts to. After some time, it dries up and gets a bit firm making it slow. Remove the cowl panel and remove the wiper motor (4 bolts) lift it out and remove the one nut that holds the arms to the motor then remove the small 6 bolts and the linkage should slide out from one end. then you can get to each linkage parts and lube them up. Should make a big improvement.
